AIBU to refuse to let DD get her eyebrows plucked for a dance competition?

I've namechanged as with my other posts you would know who I was.

DD is only 9, just turned it last week. She attends a dance school where she trains most evenings. She is obsessed. They do normally wear makeup, but as she is performing with 9-11. They are asking the girls to pluck their eyebrows. WIBU to refuse this?

why are you against it? whats the big deal

MrsCurly · 25/06/2016 18:52

Absolutely. What a strange message to send to children.

peachpudding · 25/06/2016 18:58

yea it sends the message that she is the only one in the group not allowed to do it because her mum is making a point about feminism. It's no different than wearing makeup, jewelry or putting on a pretty pink dress.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/06/2016 19:02

They are asking the girls to pluck their eyebrows. I would be seriously worried about them and their ability to care for children.

Of course painfully pulling hairs out of your body is different to jewelry.

LexieSinclair · 25/06/2016 19:03

She is 9 Peachpudding! Totally different to wearing a pretty dress, plucking her eyebrows is giving her the message that her own natural eyebrows are not good enough.
Women and girls have enough if this crap to deal with without being told as children that they should pluck their eyebrows.

starry0ne · 25/06/2016 19:03

Disclaimer I have a 9 yearold DS...So think from a different perspective..

To me 9 is very young to be doing beauty stuff like that which will need continuing for many years just to maitain.

I do see Make up as very different as it is wiped off at the end of the night.

It is also quite painful.. I am not sure I would want a 9 year old DD having her eyebrows plucked..For most children this is a hobby and not sure I would want them judged on if the plucked their eyebrows or not...

LunaLoveg00d · 25/06/2016 19:05

Absolutely ridiculous. My 10 year old did her dance show this week and the only "make up" allowed was lots of glitter.

Tell the dance teacher to pluck off.

Balletgirlmum · 25/06/2016 19:05

Dd is 14 & at vocational dance school. She does not pluck her eyebrows. I will allow her to if they get out of control but otherwise I see no need.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/06/2016 19:07

My 10 year old did her dance show this week and the only "make up" allowed was lots of glitter. Sounds awesome. Lots of glitter is great. Removing body hair AT 9 isn't.

Balletgirlmum · 25/06/2016 19:08

Make up is necessary if performing under bright stage lighting to prevent the face looking washed out & featureless.

Plucking eyebrows is not necessary.

SisterMoonshine · 25/06/2016 19:10

No way! YANBU
My DD is just a little older and now notices the eyebrows of women around who were pluck happy back when they were younger, so luckily I think she'd refuse herself.

Scarydinosaurs · 25/06/2016 19:10

Plucking eyebrows is NOT for 9 year olds!

AnyFucker · 25/06/2016 19:11

A 9 yo with plucked eye brows would actually look freaky

That's without the stupid comments about "feminism gawn maaad"

DDDances · 25/06/2016 19:11

Okay, bar the one of you who disagree, I'm glad I won't be a weirdo for not letting her!

hazeyjane · 25/06/2016 19:12

My 10 year old does dance shows, they wear make up and she asks not to, and they are fine with that. Plucking eyebrows at that age is crazy

pinkieandperkie · 25/06/2016 19:13

I think 9 is too young. Also it really hurts. Smile

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 25/06/2016 19:13

Yanbu for lots of reasons, particularly the fact that it hurts!!

AnyFucker · 25/06/2016 19:14

I think the weirdo here is peach

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/06/2016 19:15

Nope,not at 9!

Hulababy · 25/06/2016 19:16

They are asking the girls to pluck their eyebrows. WIBU to refuse this?

They shouldn't be asking young girls, not even teens heck not even really pre-teens, to be plucking eye brows.

Now if your 9y had come up to you independently, and asked you to let her do so because she was conscious of them or making her unhappy, I would have considered it. Think DD was 11/12 when she had hers first done - her choice, her reasons and i listened and allowed it. But being told to when so young - no!

MurphysChild · 25/06/2016 19:16

Not before 14, then threading.

KC225 · 25/06/2016 19:17

And that's a no from me. Plucking at 9 is nuts

Hulababy · 25/06/2016 19:18

I think stage make up is VERY different. Stage make up is due to the bright lights, and making the face actually show up somewhat. Stage make up is normally quite different to going out type make up anyway.
On stage under bright lights you'd not even see their eyebrows!

Hulababy · 25/06/2016 19:20

DD had hers threaded at 11/12y (def secondary school, think it was in y7) through her choice. I could thing of no valid reason not to allow it. Seemed more unfair not to allow it in the circumstances.

However - at age 9 and not her own choice either - again, definitely NO.

WreckingBallsInsideMyHead · 25/06/2016 19:23

Make up yes, it is arguably necessary under stage lighting

Plucking eyebrows, no way at 9 unless she had asked to because of bullying or something. I can't believe you'll be the only one who won't allow it either
