AIBU?

unsure about the petition

I voted to remain but I just don't know how I feel about the petition - it's a democracy and the voting is now done. The damage and hurt is already here, it won't go away if the petition is successful will it??

Not so much an AIBU as an is there any point? Please can someone explain it to me...

I actually think a civil war would be possible if the referendum was run again with a different outcome.

The people may be stupid and misinformed (or they might just have a different opinion to you), but they are still the people and it would seem they have spoken.

It looks now like other EU countries have started rumbling. I don't know how I would have voted, I am not a UK or EU citizen.

I can see both sides, the same as if a referendum was held now for Australia leaving the Commonwealth. I would be torn by head over heart.

If Scotland leaves the UK, I would think I would be time for us to start thinking about a Commonwealth vote.

Initially I wasn't going to sign the petition, as we've had a democratic vote and the majority have voted to leave, so we should respect that.
But then I heard that Farage himself had previously said that such a close vote should not be accepted, and that this actual petition was set up by a leave voter in case the remain won with the same small majority. If it's acceptable for the leavers to start off this petition then surely it's acceptable for whichever is the minority party to follow it through.

Why can we not just have another fucking referendum, this time without all the bollocks, the spin, the Murdochisation. If the result is still the same, then fine, we'll go with it.

I know there are probably 100 reasons why not, but really why can't we?

Oh right, someone mentioned civil war.

Christ. Would it really come to that? After all we're a nation of shopkeepers and all that.

Yes it could cause civil war. Thankfully that won't happen as DC has stated there will be no second referendum.

To put it simply, because this involves politics and what you've suggested is never going to happen Sad

'Why can we not just have another fucking referendum, this time without all the bollocks, the spin, the Murdochisation.'

I think there should have been an independent body who would say 'Claim X is a lie'. 'Claim Y is a lie' etc. or 'things are getting overheated please dial it down a bit'.

This referendum was won on lies and shouting.

The Petition was started before the voting was closed by a leave voter who admits he thought they wouldn't win and has now expressed his regret at starting it and ut being "hijacked by remainers" - his words!!

None of that matters.

Unless you can prove that the voting itself was rigged.

Shit creek will look like clear water compared to what will happen if the outcome is ignored/overturned IME.

Democracy isn't always nice.

I just read this as DC and was about to ask how old your DC was and how were they an expert on this? Grin

My MP has said that she supports this along with 16/17 year old allowed to vote.

Scotland will get another one and will keep getting them until sturgeon gets the answer she wants.

And they were /are equally clueless about what happens if they go independent. How long do we want to go on with all this?

The idea is to get out of this mess, not make it last longer.

Good luck with that - considering the pathetic number of 18-25ers who voted, I don't quite know what makes her think they'd do any better with a still younger group

To be honest I would rather that June 2016 went down in the history as the month we made utter fools of ourselves and backtracked on the referendum result (with all the horrible consequences that entails) than as the month when we began the break up of the United Kingdom and nobody had the balls to stop it.

I agree with allegretto but unfortunately none of the politicians have the balls to admit that they have made a shocking mistake, they would rather plunge us into a long, long, recession but it's everything else we will lose and I have yet to hear from a 'leave' person or politician as to how we will get out of this mess.

Some interesting information re: referendum from Geoffrey Roberton QC in the Guardian, worth a look. Sorry can't link from my phone.
