To want to move to Scotland

WalkingBlind · 24/06/2016 12:42

I'm actually part Scottish anyway and live literally on the border. I'm remain (I do NOT want this to be a huge remain/leave debate the decision was already made) and it seems that Scotland now intend to separate from the UK. Referendum is in the works.

I'm considering moving to Scotland before they leave to fit in with what I think will be better for my children (in my personal opinion).

Is anyone else considering doing this?

Will it be harder to do once Scotland have had their referendum?

Please no arguments about my choice of which campaign to support or "we must now all join together" comments. Thanks

2moreminutes I have at least 15 Scottish family members living in England permanently at the moment.... I'm not going to feel that guilty about apparently forcing myself on them.

Scotland is being far more welcoming than my current Country/County. Yes fair enough half of England can't just move to Scotland but I never accused the "leave lot" of anything so please stop generalising and take any remain vs leave bullshit somewhere else.

I'm a young disabled mother terrified of what will happen to my family and you're comment is unnecessary. Surely my post here looking info shows that thinking things through is exactly what I'm doing.

The rise in oil price will cushion the decline a wee bit Meme. But why on earth did you think that a job in the oil industry or an economy dependent on the oil industry wouldn't be subject to price fluctuation? It always has been. And the oil industry has always been liable to let people go at a moment's notice.

Why didn't you realise that the reason stuff has been refurbished and not replaced was an indication of an industry coming to the end of it's shelflife?

Aberdeen is usually very prosperous when the rest of the country is in recession, on it's uppers (but still ok compared to most of the rest of the country really) when the rest of the country is experiencing some growth. It's been that way since they started drilling in the North Sea. And it is directly linked.

It's just a simple case of you can't have it both ways. so many people of my age group in Aberdeen would never have thought it a good idea to get a job in the oil industry- it was always known that things would get tricky around now. People's mums and dads who worked in the oil industry did look at the projections and tell their kids.

Why did you think there were all these well paying jobs going (at times) and not enough Aberdonians wanting them? Aberdeen was a reasonable size town, fairly prosperous but nothing earth shattering, before the oil, and it'll go back to being that after the oil.

I work for a uni in Scotland and the sheer scale of downsizing and severance that is currently going on due to lack of funding has never been experienced before. It's incredibly serious.

Myfriendscallmeoh is right. I also work at a Scottish Uni. We can't charge our students, like English Unis do. There are massive, compulsory job cuts on the way and Uni staff have been moving south to better resourced Unis in England. Now we don't have access to EU funding. We, as a family, are not from the UK and a job opportunity has arisen in our home country. I'm not sure that we'd manage to sell our modest home now to move back.

I live just beside Aberdeen,
Job market is terrifying
I should have been back working full time hours long ago but there just aren't jobs.
People being paid off left, right & centre.
No sign of it picking up any time soon.
All to do with the cost of a barrel of oil.

At first I thought the slump was being used by oil companies to justify housekeeping / getting rid of dead wood.
Good opportunity to ditch all the contractors etc charging massively inflated costs.
Doesn't appear to be the case now.

I think Scotland does quite well out of the EU, too (but not entirely sure about that)

Scotland does very well out of the UK. We have no idea if that will be replaced by the domestic governments.

I don't think there is a cat's chance in hell of an independent Scotland joining the EU

a lot of scots don't like the english, why would you want to move there ????

hmmm.

Although a bit chilly, Scotland has some fabulous cities and breathtaking landscapes.

But why is a Scottish desire for independence (not born out in their last referendum) from the rest of the UK so much more worthy than the UK's (democratically demonstrated) desire to leave the EU?

I live in Scotland. It is not utopia, despite what Sturgeon would have you believe. Higher education is struggling with teachers working to rule, roads are appalling - pothole capital of the world - NHS overwhelmed. Yes the scenery is lovely when it's not raining but paradise it ain't.

Question dementedma why does the Scottish govt not raise taxes for wealthier folks then? Having spent a fair bit of time in Sweden recently, I think it makes a lot if sense. And yes, am happy to be included in that. We want great public services, we need to pay for them.

Really mrsfuzzy ?
OP now that there is a vague possibility of another Scottish referendum you'll get lots of posters running Scotland down and coming out with racist rubbish like mrsfuzzy. It might be an idea to start a thread in the Scotsnet section and ask for information about the specific areas you'd consider moving to.

I think ocelot they want to be seen as magnanimous and not a party that hits people for taxes. So wr have populist policies like free prescriptions for all. Great for those on a low income but ridiculous for highly paid people, Inc Ms Sturgeon, who can afford to pay. They have got away with a great deal because there has been no strong opposition in Scotland until the recent rise of the new Tory leader Ruth Davidson. Hopefully, she will provide a challenge.

Interesting. I am a leftie but also think that opposition is good for a government. Thanks for informing me.

If FB is to be believed, pretty much everyone I know is 'seriously' looking into moving to Scotland/Sweden/anywhere but here.

I'd bet my house that every single one of them is still here in five years time Grin

A very interesting point, thank you. Hadn't thought about it like that.

aplace just stating a point, the scots might not want loads of english moving up north - they did built hadrians wall to keep us out Grin.

Hadrian's Wall was built by the Romans for the visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. They wanted to keep the barbarians north of the Roman Empire.....

Er... I was taught the Romans built Hadrian's Wall to keep the Scots out but I had a rubbish Scottish education so what would I know?
