To want to move to Scotland

WalkingBlind · 24/06/2016 12:42

I'm actually part Scottish anyway and live literally on the border. I'm remain (I do NOT want this to be a huge remain/leave debate the decision was already made) and it seems that Scotland now intend to separate from the UK. Referendum is in the works.

I'm considering moving to Scotland before they leave to fit in with what I think will be better for my children (in my personal opinion).

Is anyone else considering doing this?

Will it be harder to do once Scotland have had their referendum?

Please no arguments about my choice of which campaign to support or "we must now all join together" comments. Thanks

But look
qz.com/714622/saudi-arabia-has-declared-an-end-to-its-oil-war-with-the-us/

he oil price will go back up a bit soon. Just like it did when Putin came to power and the Russians stopped virtually giving it away as they were desperate for foreign currency. Funnily enough, this has come not long after Putin got involved in Syria (the Saudis are allegedly major ISIL funders).

Always best for look to what is going on significantly to the east of Aberdeen when trying to work out what is going on in the Aberdeen economy.

Meme is correct about Aberdeen , it's a mess

55,000 job losses

20% drop off house prices

2 years ago there was 1800 houses for sale there is now 4300

People are losing their homes left right and centre

The SNP haven't reported that have they.

I wouldn't be rushing to move here personally, had we been independent with this oil crisis we would be totally screwed.

I should say I live in Aberdeen

Many business are folding , resuturants , hotels closing

The effect the oil prices has had has been devastating and there in no light at the end of then tunnel in 2017 into 2018

Anyone who says that the Scottish oil industry will recover because the price of oil will rise at some point doesn't understand the specific problems that North Sea oil and gas face 1) the cost of re-opening drilling is tremendousyou can't stop drilling one day and then start again. It takes a big investment to put a rig back into commission. 2) the oil companies have been refurbishing rigs for years, when they really should have been replaced. They're at the point where they have to be replaced because they're just not safe; 3) the remaining oil is hard to get out of the ground. The longer the industry is in this state, the lower the chances are that it will ever return to this country.

While the collapse of the industry is centered on Aberdeen, it has big consequences for independence plans/revenue raising.

HuskyLover1, where do you live? that sounds lovely.
I am considering moving too but not sure about the habitual residence test or if i will be asked to leave if there is an independence referendum.
I know the general consensus is to wait and see the terms negotiated but these terms will be negotiated by boris, gove and farage so its not going to end well. I want to move to scotland not necessarily because of EU but because i have lost faith in England. i'm walking around and 50% of my neighbours, colleagues, friends and family voted to leave. I can't stand to live amongst a group of people who choose isolation over unity.
Scotland voted to stay and i want to stand with like-minded people. I'm just desperate to know that if i buy somewhere there and relocate that i can stay.
such sad times. Sad

I live in Tayside and do not recognise the country that Meme is describing! I live in a lovely town, I am a Uni student and my kids schools are fine. I have seen far, far worse in other parts of the UK! I feel very lucky to live where I do.

Aberdeen has always been in a bubble, economy wise. They were hardly hit by the recession.

Memememe I knew instantly you were talking about Aberdeen. My son has a job just now but he is like everyone else and doesn't know if it will go beyond the end of the year. Like your brother in law, he can't sell his house.

YANBU. We're considering it too. Initial Rightmove research looks OK.

I've fallen out of love with England.

samlee I'm Cumbria, 99% of everyone I know or meet voted leave (and for the wrong reasons! Eg "get them out our country") Sad I've always felt really lucky to be born here but now I feel like it's been tainted and I don't feel like I fit in here. People are actually telling me to "fuck off with Scotland and the rest of them migrants" it's disturbing Confused

Its like scotland want to put people onto the Titanic as it is sinking.

I dont get it, what will they do without English subsidies?

It's hard to be absolutely precise because some figures aren't broken down to a regional level, but the figures available suggest that on balance Scotland is probably neutral in terms of EU funding once you take account of everything including CAP, structural funds and so on. And I don't recognise Meme's Scotland either. For me the key thing here is the fact that Scotland generally is still a much more left-leaning social democracy.

Report
madcapcat · 24/06/2016 21:45

And Scotland needs and welcomes more people, so whatever happens I cannot see people asked to leave.

meme I don't recognise the picture of Scotland you are painting. You say houses aren't selling wheras Registers of Scotland say "Residential sales volumes in Scotland in February 2016 were 5,507, an increase of 7.7 per cent on the previous year.". They tell the story of a fairly active property market. I don't know where you get your evidence from.

Scotland has some privilege and great poverty, lots of it, and everything in between. That's just a fact. There are intractable social/health problems in some parts and the authorities are now holding their hands up and admitting they do not know how to solve them because everything has failed. (Whilst, as socialists, saying they will not stop trying.)

Is that different to England though, bits of it? I don't really think so!

The oil industry: well, the SNP has been very quiet about its collapse, as you'd expect because it was a big issue in Indyref1 and presumably they don't want to have to go on about it in Indyref2.

The SNP is not all that: but they're no worse than Labour and a little better in some areas. It's a nice life here and you don't need to be middle class to have a lot of good things going on (you do need not to be in poverty but that's the same over the UK).

Felco · 24/06/2016 22:00

Property: Aberdeen's implosion has driven a loss in property values when you take the whole of Scotland into account. Our house has lost several thousand pounds this quarter according to the house price index. That's not a representation of its value on the market but it does matter when you need to get a mortgage.

Forgive me for asking this but have I missed something happening in Aberdeen? Why is it so bad in Aberdeen and not other parts of Scotland.

I am a single mum in scotland, I moved back here last year and I am so glad I did. My quality of life is WAY better here, I get doctors appointments quicker, registered with a dentist! Kids school is amazing. I got a lovely wee part time term time job...Scotland has offered me this. I am a Scottish national but lived I wakes for 10 years where the quality of life in the Welsh valleys was god awful. Obviously there are bad bits in scotland, like everywhere else in the world, by I am glad I made the move back to my homeland x

Because Aberdeen is so dependent on North Sea oil - historically much more prosperous than other parts of Scotland but more vulnerable to the fluctuations in oil prices and markets. Arguably, Aberdeen's economy is in the process of collapsing.

Seriously.
Do you really think Scotland want a shitoad of English upping sticks and descending on their country?
And you all accuse the Leave LOT of not thinking things through properly Hmm

I live in Aberdeen and have done for almost ten years. Born in England, husband Scottish. Aberdeen HAS been hit by the oil crisis, but it isn't as bad as people are saying. It is only bad for you if you own a home, are a landlord or just very rich and not used to having no money. If you work somewhere that isn't oil related you are more than likely OK. What hotels and restaurants have closed down recently? They all get replaced pretty quickly by something else. Everyone who rents is loving the lower rental prices, I have plenty of friends who have now rented a bigger place for the same price as their original rent. The schools still do free meals for the first three years. My husband works for an oil company and luckily has been ok, but it seems to be the high end admin and engineer jobs that have been going in the industry reform.
