Seriously excited! It's still in the pond, it's about 18 inches to 2 feet long and just beautiful!

My sister caught one once.... My mum didn't believe her at first!!!

We have loads of frogs & toads, the DC would love a snake!!

Evergreen17 · 23/06/2016 17:55

Very exciting
We have 2 in our garden
Last time they had babies, too cute.
If you have a compost heap they might lay eggs there as warmSmile

Evergreen17 · 23/06/2016 17:56

Wow! It's beautiful, lucky you....

Mycatsabastard · 23/06/2016 18:47

It's not posted Evergreen

I don't think anyone needs fear snakes going camping. They really do like the quiet life and won't actively choose to live where people are regularly.

This house was empty for a year before we moved in so the garden was very overgrown. The pond was completely choked with weeds but after pulling them out we found four goldfish! We added our own fish plus the toad and frogs and newts we'd brought from our old pond.

We have two hedgehogs living in next doors garden, foxes out the front of our house - teen had one come up to her recently and it rubbed it's head off her leg like a cat does! I hear them at night (fighting or having sex - not sure which).

We also have buzzards and owls here. Very lucky to live here.

snark I did not know that! I've only seen the odd one in my garden, but they seem very sweet creatures
Their legless lizard name makes me think of drunk lizards forgetting where their left their lega

emeraldlakes · 23/06/2016 18:51

I'm a little jealous. The most exciting thing I've seen in my garden is a hedgehog that my dog discovered in the bushes last year. The big wimp took one look and high tailed it back inside.

LuluJakey1 · 23/06/2016 18:54

It is lovely. Is it alright? Has it gone in the pond to cool off do you think?

TheSpottedZebra · 23/06/2016 18:55

Your pic makes it look like you've locked him in a snakey jail.

I REALLY want to see a slow worm. I've never seen one and I don't think it's fair.

MrsDoylesTeaParty · 23/06/2016 19:10

That is so cool! I would be so excited! My cat brought in a camel spider last year which was a bit gross but that was exciting too.. Nature is great.

Sallyingforth · 23/06/2016 19:26

It's lovely!
Do please take great care of it.

AnotherPrickInTheWall · 23/06/2016 19:34

When I was a kid grass snakes were common. I can honestly say I've not seen one for nearly forty years. Lucky you.

BaboonBottom · 23/06/2016 19:46

You can encourage and help reptiles in your garden by putting a piece of corrugated metal on a sunny bit. They will sit under or on it to warm up and sleep under it

NeedACleverNN · 23/06/2016 19:51

That's a really beautiful specimen. Lucky you

hotdiggedy · 23/06/2016 19:56

Wow!!!

Mycatsabastard · 23/06/2016 19:56

It seems to have gone from the pond. I think I scared it when I opened the conservatory door, I hadn't spotted it until the movement made me look and it shot into the pond. The netting is to stop herons and cats eating the fish.

There is an escape route from the pond which we built for the frogs and toads so although it looks like nothing can get in and out, there is a way out.

I will keep an eye out for it daily now. We found a baby toad the other day which is really unusual, we generally just see the huge ones. I'm hoping that the snake is a resident in our garden and we get to see it a lot.

I'm really surprised at the response on here, pleasantly surprised. I expected a couple of 'burn it with fire' type posts but really pleased that so many people are as happy to see this as me.

It's really made my day. The kids were disappointed not to see it but DP got home in time to see it and was as in awe as me!

We found adders in our garden years ago. Seems they lived under the shed

The shed burnt down

Shame that

CharminglyGawky · 23/06/2016 20:30

Aww lovely, haven't seen a grass snake in years!

I did catch a slow worm when I was a kid though, set up a lovely little habitat for it and researched them so I knew what to feed it ect. My mum was impressed with the level of prep but still made me release it... Something about how keeping it would be cruel and that wildlife should not be treated like pets. I thought she was horribly mean at the time but now I agree!

MiscellaneousAssortment · 23/06/2016 21:06

QOD err, well timed humor?

VodkaJelly · 23/06/2016 21:22

We had a grass snake in our old house, the bastard thing bit my dog, huge vet bill, hate hate hate the bloody things

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 23/06/2016 21:24

Are you going to give him a name

DesolateWaist · 23/06/2016 21:27

WiddlinDiddlin · 23/06/2016 21:29

Lovely!

I suspect it won't have gone far, your pond is probably a regular hang-out/dinner spot for Snakey!

Grass snakes are quite a lot bigger than adders though, a big mature female grass snake can be around 4/5 foot long but its unlikely you'd see one that size (or see all of it, they are pretty secretive)..

Adders are under a metre long and generally around 2ft ish.

SlimCheesy2 · 23/06/2016 21:32

I'm looking in our pond tomorrow. :)

We live mid-terrace and have dogs but we have a badger set in our compost heap!

Watchingdallas · 23/06/2016 21:34

Boak.
