AIBU My partner of 15 years has put a password on the laptop I bought him

I have spent hours organising all my photos into Folders and thought it would make a great Fathers Day present to upload them onto the laptop that I bought him for Christmas. The photos are from our kids birth to date. However, he has put a password on and I now cant upload the pics for his FD surprise! AIBU to feel annoyed about this? He hasnt told me he has done this and I now feel that he doesnt trust me or is he hiding stuff from me?

AFAIK you can't use a Windows 10 laptop without putting a password or PIN on it.

Surely setting up a password is part of the normal set up. I've never had a laptop without a password.

I thought passwords were normal. Pretty sure I had to set up a password when I got my laptop.

My laptop has a password as it linked itself to my Microsoft account (so msn, hotmail account) and I put my email password in to open it. It did this all by itself as part of the set up. I'm sure I could turn it off but I'm not bothered so leave it. DH knows my password anyway.

Yabu.
As ok have said you can't use newer models (from Win7 afaik) and even if that wasn't the case he had got the right to put a pw on his personal devices.

I also had to have a flipping password for my new computer. Drives me mad, tried to take it off and it told me something worrying about having to have it. Id not jump to conclusions at the moment.

Me and dh have passwords on everything iPads, laptops, mobiles etc some of DH passwords I know some I don't, DH doesn't know all my passwords.

Yabu it's his laptop so can have a password if he wants, why would he have to tell you he's put a password on it Confused

Everything is password protected in this house.

It's no big deal. Just ask him for it.

In fact I haven't had a laptop that you didn't need a password for, or years.

I couldn't even tell you if dh knows the password on my laptop. I don't hide it from him but I don't think he has asked or had reason to use it since I got it. He could have it if he wanted though

Passwords are a pretty normal thing with any electronic device nowadays. I think maybe what you're annoyed about is that he's put a password on and not told you the password? If this is the case, just ask him. Explain why you need to know it and I'm sure he'll be forthcoming. If he's reluctant to give it you don't push it too much but then you need to start wondering why you were suspicious of the password business in the first place. Do you trust him completely now or is there a reason you are suspicious of him having a password? We have passwords on all our stuff but we both know each others as they're only on there incase they get stolen etc.

I know you wanted to do the Father's Day thing as a surprise but you don't have to tell him exactly what you're doing just that it's a surprise.

Yes, just ask him.

And if you have electronic devices without passwords, I really urge you to.
Quite often email accounts open automatically, and passwords to important sites can be recovered through email.
Not to mention saved passwords for other sites.
It's quite normal that he has a password. Did you try to guess it and failed?

Yabu to just jump to conclusions because of the password. My laptop won't let you set it up without the password, all the devices in my house has a password though we use the same password for my stuffs and the same one for dh's devices

Agreed- we have 4 laptops in the house- they are all password protected.
Even if I knew my OHs password I wouldn't dive in and start downloading stuff onto it. Laptops are personal things, even something as innocuous as family photos would be an intrusion in our family. We are all entitled to our privacy.
I would give the photos on a memory stick as a gift.

Why would you not have it password protected? What if it was stolen and everyone had free access to your information?

My laptop is an HP with Windows 10 a password/code isn't optional. DH is welcome to the code he just has to ask.

Everything's password protected in our house even though device ownership is a fluid concept for us Grin just ask him to use the laptop and for the password. If you've anything to worry about (and am sure you don't!), it'll be clear by his reaction!

No matter who asked me for my laptop password I would always say no. I have way too much confidential stuff on here - even if I was with someone for 20yrs they wouldn't get it. By confidential I don't mean I'm on dating sites or the like but I have poetry I've written that is for my eyes only, I am auto logged into Facebook which contains private conversations with friends where they have confided personal things, same with my email account ... - I would never allow someone to railroad me into allowing them access into my personal thoughts.

I put on a temp. P/word a couple of weeks ago when I had a nice but nosey friend come to stay and didn't make a note of it. I gave her my iPad to use but didn't want her looking through my laptop.
And now I can't get on it.Confused
