To think that Nigel Farage should not be allowed any airtime

Apologies if there has been a thread but I couldn't find one:

IMO this is the real Nigel Farage

www.newstatesman.com/2016/06/nigel-farage-s-anti-eu-poster-depicting-migrants-resembles-nazi-propaganda

yet we allow him to appear on our television screens and listen to him as if he is a normal person.

Aibu unreasonable to think that beneath his friendly man down the pub veneer lies an out and out racist determined to plant hatred in people's hearts and minds Angry.

And I have added to his publicity by creating a thread about him Angry.

No I don't want to live in a totalitarian state.

I suppose I should rephrase the question and ask what we should do about the hate propaganda that seems to be becoming mainstream. Because that is what Farage's poster is IMO. The misery, fear, loss and pain that is behind the mass movement of refugees not mentioned. Their suffering used as a means to an end in a campaign. Yes the issue is timely but to portray it in this manner feeds ignorance and lack of compassion. One day we could be the ones needing to find a home elsewhere...

YABU, I want to live in a democracy, not a totalitarian state.

SapphireStrange · 17/06/2016 14:15

Yes, crossroads, to everything you're saying.

MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 14:17

" One day we could be the ones needing to find a home elsewhere..."

That's right, there will be a vote for Brexit, next thing Scotland and Wales and NI will break away to be in Europe, and before you know it there will be mass slaughter of the Welsh in London, the English in Scotland, the Irish in Birmingham.
I am only half joking - look what happened in Yugoslavia.

Flashbangandgone · 17/06/2016 14:20

One day we could be the ones needing to find a home elsewhere...

Perhaps, but by seeking to ban him and others we find offensive we start falling down the slippery slope of totalitarianism that ultimately leads to the conditions where people flee their homes!

The best way to deal with views we regard as insidious is to win the argument not shut the argument down.

LookAtMeGo · 17/06/2016 14:24

I think those defending Farage have not bothered to click on the link or the pictures that you posted for us, OP. Hmm
If they have then it's very worrying!

A virtually identical copy of the nazi propaganda poster, and the whole business of the one white guy being conveniently obscured.

acasualobserver · 17/06/2016 14:25

Remind me never to post on here again without being rigorously specific, and never to speak at all casually

I think you may have confused those things with spouting nonsense.

LookAtMeGo · 17/06/2016 14:25

It's nuffin to do with race innit?Hmm

crossroads3 · 17/06/2016 14:25

How do we win the argument - genuine question?

OP posts:
SoThisIsSummer · 17/06/2016 14:27

I agree on Blair, I find him utterly hideous I am incredulous the man moves round the world having a say in stuff, most recently trying to set up some sort of Muslim out reach in the US and you guessed it, with no Muslims on the actual board or advising. He is thick, racist, and a killer who sidles up to and smooches other killers.

MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 14:28

" It's nuffin to do with race innit?"

why are you spelling/talking like that?

whattodowiththepoo · 17/06/2016 14:29

YABU

SoThisIsSummer · 17/06/2016 14:30

I suppose I should rephrase the question and ask what we should do about the hate propaganda that seems to be becoming mainstream

why is there so much angst over immigration? Why?

Because there has been too much and too quickly and no one asked for it This is I am afraid yet another blair Legacy, people have had too much. It saddens me that the UK seems to have closed it heart to genuine refugees fleeing for their lives with nothing, because of the over whelming immigration we have had from Eastern Europe. Its sad.

SapphireStrange · 17/06/2016 14:30

I think you may have confused those things with spouting nonsense.

Grin

That's quite funny. Inexact my words may have been; nonsense is rather overstating it.

LookAtMeGo · 17/06/2016 14:31

Because that's how I imagine your voice in my head Biscuit

MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 14:34

YOu see that is typical of liberal Blair voting types. Brilliant argument, suggest that anyone who disagrees with you cannot even speak properly.
I am well spoken and and a graduate, thank you very much.
You voted for Blair didnt you? IN which case you have blood on your hands.

OurBlanche · 17/06/2016 14:35

How do we win the argument - genuine question?

Well, if you vote, encourage other to do the same, and enough of them agree with you, you will win that argument.

That's it! No other action need be taken unless you want to stand up for your beliefs and actively support/lobby for your local councillor of choice, or run for an office yourself.

Savemefromwine · 17/06/2016 14:38

If we had listened to people's concerns during the later Blair and early brown years instead of smeaeing people's concerns on immigration and integration as racist then the vile ukip wouldn't have seen its votes sky rocket.

And still you and others like you don't learn do you op.

You seek to ban speech from people you don't agree with and by doing foster seething hatred and discontent.

Your post is ridiculous and anti democratic.

HowBadIsThisPlease · 17/06/2016 14:41

Maria, listen to yourself.

It is a matter of historical record that Enoch Powell was considered to be unacceptably racist and that his speeches were considered to be unacceptable in inciting racial hatred. this is fact - this is what was thought, and what happened.

You are now - with quotes - arguing that his views are reasonable, and you seem to share them.

this shows that

  • either society has changed, to make that which was once unacceptable, acceptable
  • or, you are out of step with what society as a whole considers acceptable.

Which do you think it is?

whichever it is - do you think that this is good?

MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 14:43

you people do not even bother to read posts properly and then try to make out that other people are stupid and 'racist'.

SoThisIsSummer · 17/06/2016 14:44

I also find Frankie Boyle beyond Odious, can we ban him too?

crossroads3 · 17/06/2016 14:46

I have amended my original post.

Isn't that what this forum is for - discussion?

It's not just that I don't agree with him - I think there should be a line that all politicians should not cross and that poster has crossed it IMO. So he should have to toe a certain line as should everyone else.

I don't know how that is done in a democracy - where the red lines are set - by whom and how.

As the whole world moves towards the far right it seems, this is what we are going to get.

OP posts:
MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 14:55

LookAtMe - gosh you are so right on aren't you? Well done!
You did vote for Blair didnt you?

OurBlanche · 17/06/2016 15:00

crosroads it has gone a it weird now, hasn't it?

But you red lines re set by society as a whole... attitudes, voting, newspaper reportage, mutual agreement... all then gets enshrined in law courts and interpetations and modifications to laws.

But it starts with oeple objecting, as you are doing now.
