AIBU to think that Miss Great Britain didn't deserve to be stripped of her title

Ok so I'm not one for beauty pageants or anything but the current Miss Great Britain (or should I now say former) is a contestant on ITV2 Love Island. She's had sex with a fellow contestant and now Miss Great Britain have stripped her of her title because of it.
I think it's an awful example of slut shaming in this day and age and a bad example to send to women everywhere that if they have sex they are punished.

I don't agree that she was right to have sex on tv but all the men are given a pat on the back while the women are shamed.
What are your thoughts?

papergirl it's pretty graphic, I don't think I'd want dds watching it, but frankly it can't get much worse than they will have already seen!

Apparently there's an early evening version and a late evening version - the early one being more family friendly..

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/06/2016 00:19

It is a load of shit OP but is anyone really shocked that this kind of organisation has some ideas that are a bit outmoded? She should tell them to bugger off back to 1962. And then she should stop taking part in beauty pageants.

It's all so hypocritical anyway, I bet all sorts of sexy shenanigans go on in the beauty pageant world.

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/06/2016 00:24

Papergirl1968 it's quite a seedy show really. I'm all for having fun and having sex but for the love of God don't do it on TV. I'm only about ten years older than the contestants but I'd rather take a dip in an acid bath than be filmed having sex. Even if the sex is only a bit of grunting and some jiggling about under the cover of a big duvet.

VestalVirgin · 17/06/2016 00:34

I don't get it. It's supposed to be about beauty. Either she is the fairest of them all, or she isn't.

Hmm It is really a "woman who best fits sexist stereotypes of what a woman should be like", is it?

Probably a Mr. GB would get extra points for promiscuity, as that's part of the "ideal man" picture.

Yep. jezebel.com/5989839/big-breaks-for-blowjobs-the-dark-underbelly-of-the-miss-usa-pageant

Not saying that they are all so blatant, but I remember a rumour that Danielle Lloyd was busily 'dating' one of the judges when she won Miss Great Britain.

WorraLiberty · 17/06/2016 00:40

Yeah but I'd bet my bottom dollar that Mr GB wouldn't be contractually obliged to portray a wholesome image,

Well we'll never know but I personally imagine the contracts would be similar.

I don't imagine Mr GB would last long if he was photographed/videoed having sex with a woman either.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 17/06/2016 00:41

I don't think the other girls were being anything other than honest..... Slut shaming? Well in this case they may have a point

What's the definition of a slut then?

trafalgargal · 17/06/2016 00:44

Hardly surprising - anyone entering signs an agreement that they will meet certain standards of behavour -if you don't want to agree to those terms then don't enter the blooming competition. No one is twisting your arm to enter.

That said it's hardly anything new in 1973 Majorie Wallace the reigning Miss USA won Miss World - shortly afterwards she started a very public affair with (married) Tom Jones ....... she too was stripped of her title.

You want to win the olympics don't take banned drugs , you want to be a beauty queen keep your shagging discreet-not flaunt it on TV Not really rocket science.

RainIsAGoodThing · 17/06/2016 00:45

Completely agree StarChaser. Really felt for her tonight. I think she dealt with it all so well.

The pageant organisers on the other hand have dealt with it abominably. But then - beauty pageant organisers outing themselves as massive judgmental misogynists isn't the biggest shock is it.

LaBelleOtero · 17/06/2016 01:01

What's the definition of a slut then?

Is that the question to ask really? The mere existence of a word doesn't prove its validity, especially when it's a misogynistic word.

But the definition depends on the person. have you ever had sex before marriage? There will be plenty of people in the world who consider you to be a slut.

On the other hand, plenty of people would say that a woman should be able to do what she likes with her own body without being shamed for it.

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/06/2016 01:13

A slut is someone with poor housekeeping standards.

Maybe the top brass at Miss GB discovered she hadn't dusted her skirting boards.

MarcelineTheVampire · 17/06/2016 01:40

It's absolutely disgusting.

Now, I watch the show and Zara is beyond annoying but I really felt for her over this - yes, she had sex!! It's not a choice I would have made on national television but she did and that's that.

He was greeted with 'waaaaay' off all the lads and she was immediately slut shamed- this is an appalling attitude.

Miss GB is an antiquated and inherently sexist organisation so I'm
Not wholly surprised that they have stripped her of the title but it is still the wrong decision IMO, as a pp says she has handled the whole situation with dignity.

MarcelineTheVampire · 17/06/2016 01:45

I thought they just 'advised against this kind of behaviour' but it was not contractual? That's what I read yesterday...

beetroot2 · 17/06/2016 01:45

Just goes to show why these stupid competitions need to be gone.

bilbul · 17/06/2016 02:11

YABU. If I had sex on TV my employer would sack me too.

bilbul · 17/06/2016 02:12

"a bad example to send to women everywhere that if they have sex they are punished."

No this is not what it's about. It's not because she had sex. It's about the fact she did it on TV.

TheDropBear · 17/06/2016 02:13

Not saying that they are all so blatant, but I remember a rumour that Danielle Lloyd was busily 'dating' one of the judges when she won Miss Great Britain.
She did get her title stripped because of it though.
I can't get overly fussed about this, beauty pageants have always been about presenting a certain image, it'll have always been made clear to her this wouldn't be accepted. Plus they only hold the title for a year, so not like she was going to have to avoid sex on TV forever.

beetroot2 · 17/06/2016 02:19

Im a believer that your job doesn't and shouldn't define your private life. How dare employers think they have that right. If you go to work and do a fantastic job its none of their damn business what you do when you're not working.

ScoutandAtticus · 17/06/2016 04:01

I'm not sure it is sexist. If you ignore the beauty pageant aspect and let's say she was in adverts for an everyday product, hair gel for instance. Surely they would have sacked her as well for shagging on TV. It's just the product doesn't want to be associated with that image. I don't think it would have been different for a man either. I think the fact that the 'product' being represented was a beauty pageant automatically adds a sexist slant to it (rightly so) but I think the same would have happened to any product and to a male or female.

Buttock · 17/06/2016 04:20

I think anyone (man or woman) who brings the company they work for or represent into disrepute would be stripped of their title.

Having sex on TV isn't exactly a respectable thing to do is it? It's one step below being a porn actor, and I'm sure the "Miss World" or whatever it is doesn't want to be associated with anything seedy like that.

mylovegoesdown · 17/06/2016 04:57

I'm sure I'd be sacked for having sex on TV for bringing my profession into disrepute. I wouldn't call that slut shaming.

Want2bSupermum · 17/06/2016 05:07

beetroot your job does define your private life though. As an auditor I'm subject to independence rules. If I was having sex with someone at my client and didn't tell my employer the moment I had formed a relationship with the person I would be fired for professional misconduct. This ImO is no different. Fine to have sex but having sex on TV is not acceptable to me. Both the male and female who had sex on TV are in the wrong as are the people who allowed this crap on the TV.

Papergirl1968 · 17/06/2016 07:52

Thanks, guys. I will ban it, another decision which won't be popular with the DDs!

Littlechip · 17/06/2016 07:56

How is it unreasonable that she was stripped of the title? She entered a competition and agreed to the T&Cs. All she had to do was manage to not have sex on TV in that same year. Hardly difficult to understand, is it?

ArgyMargy · 17/06/2016 08:03

YABU for watching such shite.
