Is it just me? (Very trivial; potato related)

Is it just me or are potatoes shit at the moment? I haven't had a nice potato in months! I've bought several different kinds (jersey royals, King Edwards, sweet potatoes) from a few different supermarkets and they have all been horrid. All grey and bitter and too much water in them so they're really crunchy like a carrot when raw. I love potatoes normally but have gone right off them. Probably for the best - should be low carbing anyway.

Yanbu, definitely a bit grey

blue2014 · 16/06/2016 20:12

The ones in lidl are amazing

elodie2000 · 16/06/2016 20:14

Baking potatoes are vile. slimy and sticky. YANBU.
Aldi king Edwards are the only ones I've found that actually mash without turning into wallpaper paste.
Makes me very angry. :D

LBOCS2 · 16/06/2016 20:17

I had some nice Maris pipers from ocado, just eaten the last of the mash from them.

LadyAntonella · 16/06/2016 20:17

I actually feel a bit queasy thinking about them. Don't have an Aldi or Lidl here annoyingly.

Oh we sometimes get Ocado. Maybe will try them.

my local butcher sells potatoes out of a big paper sack. they are renowned as being the best, most delicious potatoes, but nobody knows what they're called.

butcher says he asked the farmer, who just shrugged.

they are labelled "potato lovers potatoes"

mysterious.

SanityClause · 16/06/2016 20:19

Not something I've noticed.

Thank you for starting a potato related thread, though. That's click bait, if ever I saw it!

Hassled · 16/06/2016 20:21

The best potato I've ever had was one served by my MIL, who bought them from the farmer down the road. So presumably fresher than fresh from the ground - does that make a difference? I still think about that potato about 8 years after I ate it.

LadyAntonella · 16/06/2016 20:24

You see we live in a town which is surrounded by farms, but nowhere sells potatoes other than the fecking supermarkets. Ridiculous really. We do have lots of delis and butchers selling local produce but nowhere for veg.

Fabulous thread title.

I also had fabulously fluffy mash at dinner this evening so cannot sympathise with your woes. Best of luck.

elodie2000 · 16/06/2016 20:26

As for roast potatoes, I've started buying frozen ones out of sheer desperation. They're always fluffy and crispy at the same time…no slimy middle there.

dudsville · 16/06/2016 20:27

Maybe you should move?

Oldraver · 16/06/2016 20:27

Can you grow any ? they are amazing

Cocolepew · 16/06/2016 20:27

Are you my mum op? Hmm
This is her main topic of conversation.
The new spuds in Marks and Spencers are lovely.

LadyAntonella · 16/06/2016 20:28

I'm giving it some serious consideration dudsville. I can tolerate the lack of cinema or any restaurant which isn't a chain, but this is just too much! AngryWink

Lady Balfours from Sainsburys re lovely. They're v ££ though, unfortunately.

LadyAntonella · 16/06/2016 20:30

Haha I don't think so coco... Unless you are my 18mo DD and have somehow procured a smartphone. You're meant to be asleep! Grin

I guess I could grow them.

Thanks for the Lady Balfour tip. It might be worth the extra money tbh.

Best variety for mash is Marfona - but tricky to find at some times of the year. Next best, is actually buying the baking potatoes in M & S - they are usually pretty good :)

SaucyJack · 16/06/2016 20:34

I haven't noticed potatoes recently.

I'm too busy bemoaning the dearth of tasty tomatoes and cucumbers that make you snigger to yourself at their girth.

blueteapot · 16/06/2016 20:34

Ive started only really buying local roosters - seem to work out well? We are in NI though x

HostaFireandIce · 16/06/2016 20:46

I'm not a big fan of potatoes. They taste of soil.
