Is it just me? (Very trivial; potato related)

Is it just me or are potatoes shit at the moment? I haven't had a nice potato in months! I've bought several different kinds (jersey royals, King Edwards, sweet potatoes) from a few different supermarkets and they have all been horrid. All grey and bitter and too much water in them so they're really crunchy like a carrot when raw. I love potatoes normally but have gone right off them. Probably for the best - should be low carbing anyway.

Farmers Daughter here and the issue is the season. The roasting/baking/mashing potatoes you buy in a supermarket at the moment have been in store since last autumn and the tend to go a bit rubbish over time. By September October there will be new season potatoes and they will be lovely again. Summer is for new potatoes and potato salad!!

Thanks peas! I wondered if that might be the case! I thought the Jersey Royals I got on offer in Tesco a week or two ago were a bit late(?) too so that's maybe the problem. Well I shall keep a beady eye out for some nice new potatoes for salad. I'm boycotting sweet potatoes too as the only ones I see in store travel too far to be nice I think.

I can highly recommend the potatoes from Riverford, they are always good.

With regard to growing your own, you can order seed potatoes to plant now in bags, they will be ready for Christmas.
There is an ad in July's Grow your Own magazine, Kings Seeds are selling the seed potatoes, bags to grow in and storage sacks for £14.20
(I can't see the offer on their website though, which is odd.)

You could just use Bags for Life if you make some drainage holes.

I love potatoes, they are wonderful with salted butter, gravy, beans ......

I think that M&S Jerseys are nice this year, though there are only 2 of us here, too expensive to feed a family though.

OP...I am very late this year planting potatoes for various reasons...and probably good job as we had a flood that washed away some of the garden. We've also had frosts till quite late according to OH who has to scrape the car at 6am..... if they work they work..

I have a plant that sprouted from last year so replanted it and have a mini field.....I first grew some two years ago and we had such good weather into November I reckon had I planted enough we could of been harvesting them until Christmas....

Had to open this thread to find out the trivial potato issue!

But now is the time of year for new potatoes, can't go wrong with them. Well unless they're Swedish according to the woman I overheard in the supermarket market yesterday saying "Oh, they're Swedish. I'd never buy Swedish potatoes" Grin
