Asher for a non-Jewish child?

Just that really. I LOVE the name. Love it. But we're not Jewish. Would you think it weird?

If is relevant, my husband, myself and our first daughter all have names which could be Jewish but aren't necessarily. (e.g. Leah, Rebecca). I just feel like maybe this one tips us over into, 'Why are you pretending you're Jewish when you're not?' territory.

One of my DC is named a Jewish name ... We are not Jewish however every professional we have come into contact with always asks

PurpleRainDiamondsandPearls · 15/06/2016 19:26

I know lots of (Jewish) Ashers and it's a lovely name. I would assume you were Jewish but it's fine to use it, even if you're not.

StarryIllusion · 15/06/2016 19:31

I might idly wonder why but wouldn't think anything of it. Use it if you love it, I think it's a nice name. I was friends with an Asher in infants school, he was lovely.

DS1 is Asher, he's ten. We're Catholic, but neither of our other kids have Biblical names, we just really liked it. Still do.

pilpiloni · 01/09/2016 19:52

It's a biblical Old Testament name so no different to any of the others.
Lovely name, lovely meaning.
And even if it is a traditionally Jewish name, so what?

gettingbythistime · 01/09/2016 19:56

you're not pretending to be jewish by using that name. i am a jew and didn't even realise it was jewish connected Grin. if i liked a name i would use it regardless of any religious connection to another religion. knock yourself out

TheQuestingVole · 01/09/2016 20:03

It might read as a little more Jewish than other Biblical names but less so than a Modern Hebrew or Yiddish name. Definitely not exclusively Jewish though.

DD (18) would have been Asher if she was a boy - it was the only boys name I liked, and I still love it.

My brother is called Asher and we are muslim.

3littlebadgers · 01/09/2016 20:20

Oh it is lovely!

I thought I was done after 5 but I think I have just been inspired to try for number 6 Grin

There is a popular award winning Australian actress called Asher Keddie.

I think that Asher is a lovely name.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 01/09/2016 20:33

I like it.

But.....Brimful of Asha is about a PERSON?! Everyday's a school day.

tulippa · 01/09/2016 20:58

My cousin is called Asher - he's not Jewish.

I have a Jewish name - I'm not Jewish.

I'd go for it - I think it's cool. Smile

I actually really like Asher. I would perhaps think of it as a Jewish name initially but I wouldn't think the person's parents were pretending to be Jewish iyswim.
