Asher for a non-Jewish child?

SarahAnderson · 15/06/2016 11:06

Just that really. I LOVE the name. Love it. But we're not Jewish. Would you think it weird?

If is relevant, my husband, myself and our first daughter all have names which could be Jewish but aren't necessarily. (e.g. Leah, Rebecca). I just feel like maybe this one tips us over into, 'Why are you pretending you're Jewish when you're not?' territory.

mrgrouper · 15/06/2016 16:36

I thought Asher was some type of Jewish ceremony when I read the thread title. No idea it is a name.

SelinaMeyerVP · 15/06/2016 16:40

Its a lovely name, better than my Jewish uncle - Morris Smile

sunnydayinmay · 15/06/2016 16:40

Apparently it means Happy or Blessed, and is a Christian name as well as Jewish (basically an Old Testament name).

I'd go for it, OP.

RiverTam · 15/06/2016 16:42

Never knew it was Jewish. Nice name, go for it.

maras2 · 15/06/2016 16:47

Was there a song about Asha Bosleh (sp) by Cornershop ? She is a well respected Bollywood star.

BarbaraManatee · 15/06/2016 16:51

We have an Asher. I got told it was a girl's name when he was a few weeks old. It felt very odd to be educating an older lady on biblical knowledge while visiting her church! Confused I was originally going to call him Levi. I like old testament names! We have another DS with the same name as another of Jacob's sons. I keep trying to convince DH to have more DC, see if we can complete the set! Grin

NotYoda · 15/06/2016 16:57

It's a lovely name. The other names are great too. If I had had a girl, I'd choose Leah

TBH, I might assume you were Jewish, but I don't think that Jewish people would think you are trying to appropriate names

They'e Old Testament names, aren't they?

ProteusRising · 15/06/2016 17:00

I'm Jewish and it wouldn't bother me at all nor would I think it was weird.

I actually love the name and wanted it for DS but it was vetoed!

EachandEveryone · 15/06/2016 17:02

Plenty of Jews choose none Jewish names I know plenty of Jewish Michelles and Carols. Ive never met a Jewish Asher in my life but It us a very lovely name so just use it.

NotYoda · 15/06/2016 17:06

I also love Asa

Asha Bhosle is a playback singer. She is famous for being lip synced to by Bollywood stars, but is as famous and in many cases more famous than the actors themselves. The Cornershop website explains the origins of the song better than I ever could.

Sorry for the derail!

EmmaWoodlouse · 15/06/2016 17:10

The only Asher I've ever met is definitely not Jewish (one parent is a slightly obscure Christian denomination, the other isn't religious at all). I would actually associate it, and other unusual Old Testament names, more with nonconformist Protestantism than with Judaism.

Yes that's what Asher reminds me of.

MariaSklodowska · 15/06/2016 17:13

Asher is a fab name, if you like it, go for it.

The Old Testament is the best baby name book ...Grin

Beautifullymixed · 15/06/2016 17:17

I have an Asher.
It's very popular in the Caribbean community.
I love it , he loves it too!
I also have a Levi and Malachi. All with biblical middle names.
It's a fab name OP!

JustDanceAddict · 15/06/2016 17:28

It's unusual if you're not Jewish, but it's just a biblical name really.

CutYourHairAndGetAJob · 15/06/2016 17:40

I know an Asher, I didn't know it was Jewish though. I don't think his parents are religious. It's a great name.

ConcreteUnderpants · 15/06/2016 17:43

I'm with ProteusRising. As a Jew, I wouldn't bat an eyelid and actually think it is lovely.
It's used in lots of our prayers
Just a thought though..Will you get a lots of people saying Ash-her? In Hebrew, it is pronounced A-share ('a' as in cat).

As a side note, many of my family didn't want me to use my top 2 boy names if I had a boy. Apparently Ezra and Ruben were 'too Jewish'. Confused

ConcreteUnderpants · 15/06/2016 17:45

JustDanceAddict, yes. He was a son of Jacob if I remember correctly.

NotYoda · 15/06/2016 17:46

OMG, those are such cool names. I recommend them on Babynames all the time

Beautifullymixed · 15/06/2016 18:09

Thanks NotYoda!

They are complimented on their names everywhere we go. I also love Elijah (have used it as a middle name) ,Solomon, Saul, Reuben, Caleb and Asa. I just ran out of sons to name Grin

In fact Asher has just come home from school, so I told him about this thread. He said another boy introduced himself today during break, because his name was Asher too!
Both boys are Caribbean origin.

A really cool name, with great origins and a lovely meaning.
I was going to name my DD Asher, until the scan showed me she was a girl. A friend suggested the female version Asha, but it just wouldn't do.
I waited eight years , until the next ds appeared - then finally got my Asher Smile

That's how much I love the name!

NotYoda · 15/06/2016 18:15

Beautifully

We have the same taste, clearly Smile

Sadly, DH did not.

Shot me down every time

We did find a couple we agreed on in the end

maras2 · 15/06/2016 19:07

like dylan Thanks for the info.Asha came to our city a few years ago to judge a 'Best Balti' competition.I was very impressed.

TooLazyToWriteMyOwnFuckinPiece · 15/06/2016 19:18

The only Asher I know is a Muslim man (possibly spelt Ashir not Asher, but same derivation I'd imagine). I think it's lovely.
