What do you think about school finishing early for the football?

That really. This letter comes home Monday saying this;

*"Football is like marmite..... From time to time.... Very Important matches involving the England team are held in school time and this can cause big problems for families who value football highly...... Therefor for this match only we have made these 3 options....;

  1. Collect child at 1:20pm onwards so can settle as a family to watch kick off.
  2. Collect at half time, between 2:30-3:00 so adults can watch the while of the match and still collect children.
  3. Collect at normal time.

All children in school that afternoon will have a choice of activities, either ther watch the while match or arts and crafts."

*somewhat shortened

I'm a bit stunned by it personally.

The attendance argument is a bit pointless. In this case, there are no lessons to miss, so nobody is going to be behind if they go home for the afternoon.

Not saying it's fair, but the argument doesn't really work.

CallWaiting · 16/06/2016 14:58

I think it's a great idea. I personally don't like football but my boys love it and they'd have really enjoyed watching it this afternoon.

Colouring in a Wales flag would be a bit more challenging.

FireTruckOhFireTruck · 16/06/2016 15:35

It's not very often, so I don't mind too much. DS was really looking forward to watching it!

BabooshkaKate · 16/06/2016 15:39

I support this (from work whilst watching the match with my colleagues mwahahaha)

icepop9000 · 16/06/2016 17:02

For some families it is important, you may not agree but that is beside the point. For these families they would keep the children off all day so surely it better they finish early and the children go in for some of the day?

Sighing · 16/06/2016 17:24

It's not a religion (despite the comparisons about weekends, wearing certain symbols, indoctrination and extremists). They wont be engaged as a family they'll be shouting at a screen. Time off for football should be unauthorised attendance.
It's a game. My kids aren't allowed time off for board games, school needs to get a grip!

icepop9000 · 16/06/2016 17:26

I'm shocked by the snobby opinions of people. Just because you don't like football you can't assume everyone is stupid, chavvy or pathethic!!

The world would be pretty boring if we all liked the same thing! It may be just a group game but England v Wales does not happen very often it is a derby so national pride is at stake just as it would be in any sport!
As mentioned many children would have just bunked off for the whole day to watch it, unfortunately it was scheduled for 1pm local time in France so many sensible heads have decided to show it for those who want to and have other activities for those who don't.
The last few weeks are never very strenuous unless you are doing exams.

derxa · 16/06/2016 17:31

Well it's over and I wish I hadn't seen it at all. The very leafy school on my road clearly didn't allow the pupils to watch. Wee boys were trying to find out the score at pick up time.

Sighing · 16/06/2016 17:32

^^ i don't mind people enjoying a game. But WATCHING TV is not (to me) important family time. They're not playing, nor spectating.

NickiFury · 16/06/2016 17:33

I think it's brilliant and fully support it, though agree that it makes the ridiculous attendance/fining rules even more hypocritical and ridiculous than they are already.

NicknameUsed · 16/06/2016 17:40

"As mentioned many children would have just bunked off for the whole day to watch it,"

Would they? Would they really?

Who won BTW?

NickiFury · 16/06/2016 17:49

Because the culture they are being exposed to is misogynistic often racist and homophobic, things that should not be taught i school.

What utter twaddle.

JohnBarrowmaniac · 16/06/2016 18:04

A memo was sent round to all classes yesterday that we could allow the children to watch the match at 2pm. I ignored it. If England manage to get their asses to the final, then i could understand it but this is just a first round pile of shite.

Bridgetnoknickers · 16/06/2016 18:05

Yours go to the same school as mine...either that or there was a generic template floating around Wink.

We went and got DD at 1.20, then went to Costa for a naice latte and shortbread before she went to cheer...

I'll take issue with racist for a start. I love to see the camaraderie amongst players who are different races, nationalities. Non au racisme

EveOnline2016 · 16/06/2016 18:42

I wouldn't be impressed.

its nice for those who can get time off work and spend the afternoon together watching the match or doing fun things, but for me it would mean paying out for childcare over what I see as a silly football match.

EveOnline2016 · 16/06/2016 18:50

And before anyone say I did read the the times you can pick up, but I don't want my DC being upset that all thier friend have gone home and they are in school.

RequestInUse · 16/06/2016 23:01

Bridgetnoknickers hello! Smile

Wonders if we know each other lol.

OutToGetYou · 16/06/2016 23:24

Dss school allowed them to stay late to watch football today and cancelled two, I think, lessons. In the middle of his GCSE mocks (and actual GCSEs for the year above), which we are trying to tell him are very important......way to go with undermining parents, school!

I think it's pants.

GlomOfNit · 17/06/2016 10:28

Setting aside the issue that football is over-exalted in this country and doesn't always offer a fantastic example of how to behave to our children...

that is fucking unbelievable. Angry If I'd had that letter home, I'd have made an official complaint to the Governors. Or said 'well, we all dislike football in the Glom household, but we value family holidays that don't bankrupt us very highly, so I will be taking DSs out for a couple of days. I assume that's ok?'

I mean, if discretion has been taken out of the hands of individual Heads, what does the LA have to say about this?

iMogster · 17/06/2016 14:33

My son's Primary school all watched the England v Wales match in school time. They didn't stop and watch the Olympics or anything else, why this?

Paniniswapx3 · 17/06/2016 17:50

Olympics is on during the school holidays, but if not, I'd fully support them showing key events with British athletes. It's great to get behind the major tournaments & support our teams (this house is supporting England, Wales (except when versus England), Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland).

ClownsToTheLeftOfMe · 18/06/2016 09:03

I didn't realise that all you have to do to get time out from things is to bunk off just because 'they're important' to you personally.

Wow, I sure have been doing things the wrong way all these years Hmm
