What do you think about school finishing early for the football?

That really. This letter comes home Monday saying this;

*"Football is like marmite..... From time to time.... Very Important matches involving the England team are held in school time and this can cause big problems for families who value football highly...... Therefor for this match only we have made these 3 options....;

  1. Collect child at 1:20pm onwards so can settle as a family to watch kick off.
  2. Collect at half time, between 2:30-3:00 so adults can watch the while of the match and still collect children.
  3. Collect at normal time.

All children in school that afternoon will have a choice of activities, either ther watch the while match or arts and crafts."

*somewhat shortened

I'm a bit stunned by it personally.

They're doing the same in my local Primary. I think it's despicable. It's a bloody sporting event, and not even a particularly momentous one.

I would be making note of this and using it to justify taking my DCs out of school for holidays or trips out at some point in the future.

How can the school say that one day off would impair their education... and then do this?

TheFairyCaravan · 15/06/2016 10:55

Our DC have left school but I would not be happy about them watching a football match at school.

We got a lecture about how every minute of school is important when we notified the school that DS2 was going to miss an afternoon so he could see DH leave on a 4 month deployment. DS2 was going to miss PE, that he couldn't do because he was waiting on surgery for a shoulder injury. They put it down as unauthorised.

As much of a charmer as someone who says people who can't appreciate football must be in a miserable place, you mean?

Football is ridiculous. The fans are making a dreadful spectacle of themselves. I feel sorry for them that they don't know how to behave any better, personally!

AveEldon · 15/06/2016 10:57

Our school is showing it
I suspect it's because the teachers/school staff want to watch it

My dds school gave her time off to to attend the European champs of a very niche sport she is involved in. To watch not compete!

I think it's brilliant that schools take sport so seriously.

hewl · 15/06/2016 11:00

You sound utterly ignorant user

OrangesandLemonsNow · 15/06/2016 11:03

You sound utterly ignorant

You are the one however that is calling people miserable because they can't see how wonderful football is Hmm

hewl · 15/06/2016 11:04

No, you don't have to like football but fgs see some happiness in little schoolkids enjoying it! Not being able to do that IS totally miserable.

user1465023742 · 15/06/2016 11:05

Oh come now, Paul. Who's the goady fucker here? Me, or someone who thinks it's acceptable to disrupt a child's education for fripperies?

ClownsToTheLeftOfMe · 15/06/2016 11:05

I would absolutely see it as the green light to come up with my own reasons for time out to do meaningful one off things.

purplefizz26 · 15/06/2016 11:08

Takes the absolute piss.

Just because staff want to watch the match it's suddenly ok for time off, but god forbid parents request the odd day.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 15/06/2016 11:09

I wasn't talking about the school issue. I was talking about your attitude to a sport and it's supporters. And yes, you were goady. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it Grin

user1465023742 · 15/06/2016 11:11

Not sport. Football. Do get it right, dear :)

hewl · 15/06/2016 11:12

jumps over barrier, pummel user

PaulAnkaTheDog · 15/06/2016 11:14

Football is a sport. Your attempt at looking smart/funny/whatever the hell that was is just embarrassing. Certainly proves my goady point though! Thanks!

user1465023742 · 15/06/2016 11:16

Spoken like a true football fan, hewl. Are you Millwall?

user1465023742 · 15/06/2016 11:18

Football is a sport. Not all sport is football. Which bit of that don't you understand? Not all sports fans are as embarrassing as football fans. Tennis and rugby and F1 fans, for example, usually manage to conduct themselves in a manner befitting grown adults, unlike the majority of football supporters. Hence the distinction.

ClownsToTheLeftOfMe · 15/06/2016 11:22

This sums up football to me (In my miserable life Grin)

I don't need to "attempt" to be smart, Paul. Unlike you, it would seem. Still, I wouldn't expect much else from a football fan, so it's par for the course.

Ds school isn't doing this afaik. I would really mind. I'm not a football fan at all.

It does seem a bit hypocritical that parents aren't allowed to take their dc out. Also what about other national events?

I suppose the logic is that the school organise the time so it's different to one pupil missing out.

hewl · 15/06/2016 11:38

I'm not a tennis fan. I find it boring to watch and Andy Murray charmless.

But my dd enjoys tennis and I would be more than happy for her school to let them watch the wimbledon final.

Or watch a special music concert.

Or in fact anything that widens their knowledge of the world and lets them enjoy something that the whole country is talking about - whether positively or negatively!

AugustaFinkNottle · 15/06/2016 11:43

I actually think it's a good thing, anything that inspires children to take up sports should be encouraged.

Trust me, watching football on TV inspires nothing but the joys of being a couch potato.
