Aibu 9 year olds bed time

Pocketrocket31 · 12/06/2016 22:11

I send my 9 year old to his room between 7 and half past, he then gets 1 hour to watch to, read, chill etc.

Tonight he's had a absolute fit, more than the usual "I'm not tired yet" says all his friends get to stay up till 10, on a school night! He hates me and all that 😁
The fact there is kids still playing in the street doesn't help the situation.

Aibu... Is that too early? What time do your kids go to bed?

My 13 year old goes to bed between 9.30and 10! X stick to your guns X

SirChenjin · 12/06/2016 22:15

That's quite early imo - my 9 year old is in bed around 8.45/9 after shower/supper/story and then reads for 10 minutes or so. How do you manage with activities eg Cub, sports?

Worth considering a later bedtime with less chill/reading time?

blondieblondie · 12/06/2016 22:15

11 year old goes at 9.15, earlier if he wants to read.

dementedpixie · 12/06/2016 22:16

Ds (9) is in bed at 9pm on school nights and can read for 30 minutes. Dd (12) goes at 9.30pm and can also read for 30 minutes

FeckinCrutches · 12/06/2016 22:17

7 is really early. When is supper/bath time?

mlamle · 12/06/2016 22:17

It is maybe a bit early. What time's he get up in the morning? At his age he should be having around 10 hours' sleep a night, so if you work back from that and add on half an hour or so to chill, that should be about right.

SummerSazz · 12/06/2016 22:19

9 y/o goes to room at 7.15 and reads till 8. However she needs LOADS of sleep and has to get up at 6.45 am.

LocatingLocatingLocating · 12/06/2016 22:19

I have an almost 10yo. She goes up to bed at the same time as her 7yo brother (7.30-8pm), but is allowed to stay up for up to an hour (depending how tired she seems!) to play/read in her room. Apparently some kids in her class stay up til 10 though (confirmed by chatting to parents).

Pocketrocket31 · 12/06/2016 22:21

Tea is pretty early, normally around 5, he likes a bath mostly in the mornings, we're up at 6 on school days.

Only into 2 clubs at the mo, and they're straight after school

I can't help but think going to sleep between 8-8.30 for a 9 year old it fine... Maybe not

My DD needs lots of sleep though, and struggles to get up by 7, which is when she needs to get up for.

nennyrainbow · 12/06/2016 22:23

That does seem a little early but not unusually so. What time is he up in the morning! My DD ( nearly 9) has quiet time / reading from 8.30, lights out at 9 pm. But I think we are later than a lot of people.

nennyrainbow · 12/06/2016 22:23

That should have been a question mark, not an exclamation.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 12/06/2016 22:23

Officially 7:30 but she strings it out until 8 or 8:15.
I've told her that what her mates do is not my concern and that families do what works for them. 10:00 on a weeknight for 9 y.o doesn't work for me.

pollylovespie · 12/06/2016 22:25

My kids are 8 and 10 and they go to bed at 9ish and sometimes read for half an hour, sometimes not. I think that's pretty normal among their friends.

Jogonmate · 12/06/2016 22:25

Well what time does he need to be up for? My DD 9 goes at 9 and is up for 7.30am plenty of rest for her.
It does probably feel very unfair to him if he can still hear the other children outside,I was sent to bed at 7pm when I was a child and it did make me very angry as I too could hear and see the other children out ,it especially hurt during the summer months.

Maybe increase it a bit and see how tried he is in the mornings.

FeckinCrutches · 12/06/2016 22:26

I suppose it depends how much sleep etc he needs. 6am is early to be up and about for school so maybe he does need to be earlier. My three are night owls, as was I when I was younger, but they don't need to be up till 8am

TooLazyToWriteMyOwnFuckinPiece · 12/06/2016 22:27

I think the sleep time is fine but why go an hour before then - could he. To watch TV with you at 7, instead of in his room?

FeckinCrutches · 12/06/2016 22:27

Is he awake at 6, or woken at 6?

SirChenjin · 12/06/2016 22:27

I think you take the lead from them really - you can't make him sleep if he's not tired, and it can be quite nice for them to feel a bit more grown up with a later bedtime. Perhaps a bath at night, and a later bedtime with less free time afterwards? Although of you have to get up at 6 for the school run 8.30 is reasonable.

vikingorigins · 12/06/2016 22:27

My 9 yo has been heavily resisting her 8pm bedtime this week, and I remembered that when I was 9 my bedtime was moved to 9pm.

7pm seems very early.

IslaSinga · 12/06/2016 22:27

My 12 year old is a night owl and I struggle to get her to go to sleep before 10.30, although she does go up before that.

9 year old has recently started going up at 8.20ish. He has always been an early to bed boy, but I think 8.30 is reasonable for this age and he's always up early anyway.

MerryMarigold · 12/06/2016 22:30

My 7yos go to bed at 8/8.30 on school nights (8 if we're lucky, mostly later). My 10yo sleeps at 9.30 (in bed at 8.45/9), but has been 9pm since he was 6 as had trouble getting to sleep. Managed to keep it at 9 for ages Grin but got later recently. Ds2 does need more slurp so good to sleep v quickly whereas dd (his twin) good to bed at same time but sleeps later).

RueDeWakening · 12/06/2016 22:30

DD is 9, she is in bed by 7.30 and 30 mins of reading before her light goes off at 8pm. She goes to clubs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays which mean lights out is closer to 8.30pm but does generally then need waking at 7.30 the next morning for school.

She gets an extra 30 mins on Friday and Saturday and during school holidays.
