Cheeky Amazon prime!

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 11:16

Dh went to order a DVD Friday and selected the next day delivery as it was supposed to be a surprise treat for me.

He didn't know we had already used our 30 day free trial and no where did it say you will be billed £79 until after he pressed pay now.

Amazon then tried to take the £79 immediately. Luckily he spotted it and cancelled the order but now we have to wait a few days for the bank to clear it and have it returned.

This is naughty of Amazon really isn't it? If it had said before he clicked you have used your free trial and would there fore re-sign you up at a charge of £79 he wouldn't have clicked it in the first place!

This is exactly why you have separate accounts! All you need is a different email address

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 11:41

Ok, so the problem here is that your DH used your account - hasn't he got his own?

Nope. We share eBay accounts, pay pal accounts, Amazon accounts and bank accounts. We actually have nothing to hide from each other

And as another poster has said, you can share Amazon Prime with family members, myself and my wife have separate Amazon accounts and we share it Smile

Snowflakes1122 · 12/06/2016 11:43

Not naughty-of course they want you to buy Prime. It's up to you to make a note of the end of your free trial date.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2016 11:44

I suspect it did indeed say that he was signing up for Prime, he just didn't read it.

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 11:46

That's likely soupdragon he's not the best reader in the world

Lots of people get caught by this. I did too.

It's correct to say that the Ts and Cs spell it out. It's also correct to say that the Amazon process makes it easy to forget to cancel (especially if you don't use it often.)

A useful step for consumers would be for a pop-up to appear that says "You've come to end of your free Prime trial. You'll now be charged £79 as well as the cost of what you've bought. Do you want to continue?"

Amazon were fine about giving me my money back, but the impression I have about them was soured by the way their system works.

Summerwood1 · 12/06/2016 11:48

We had a free trial a while ago and cancelled before we had to pay. Can you take another free trial or does it allow you hpjust the one?

Bolograph · 12/06/2016 11:49

You can share Amazon prime not only with spouses but anyone who has cards with the same billing address. So my children use my account, including to send things to university.

The thing of people sharing accounts is weird (don't the recommendations annoy you?) but each to their own.

Liiinooo · 12/06/2016 11:54

I cancelled my Amazon Prime last year because it had gone up to £79.00 which I thought was too much. A few weeks later they offered me a reduced price membership. Hold on and you might get a similar offer

I share my Amazon account not just with my DH but also my DCs and 2 other close relations. I trust them to use their own cards when they pay and we can all take advantage of the Prime free delivery.

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 11:55

Yes!! That's what I'm trying to say. It would be handy for those who are unaware that next day delivery is part of prime or have forgotten that their prime has finished

OP posts:
AugustaFinkNottle · 12/06/2016 12:00

It would have been sensible for him to set up an account in his own name. I suspect he could then have got another free Prime trial.

BreakerofChains · 12/06/2016 12:02

If he's purchasing Prime, it will have clearly told him how much it costs.

thelonggame · 12/06/2016 12:03

Nope. We share eBay accounts, pay pal accounts, Amazon accounts and bank accounts. We actually have nothing to hide from each other

erm, nothing to hide - yes you do, he wanted to surprise you. We have our own accounts just for this reason, we aren't the same person so don't need to share everything.

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 12:04

He didn't want to purchase prime. He wanted next day delivery but wasn't aware it was part of Amazon prime. He's not the most tech savvy person

whattodowiththepoo · 12/06/2016 12:06

Yabu

BreakerofChains · 12/06/2016 12:07

I know he didn't want to purchase it but it still would have told him how much he would be charged.

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 12:10

It's possible he didn't read it but he swears there was nothing saying he re-starting Amazon prime

However I am leaning towards an error in his part because like I said he's not the most tech savvy but I know if it mentioned £79 somewhere he would have seen it and backed off. He keeps his purse strings tight.

Either way we are getting the money back anyway

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/06/2016 12:15

He's not a good reader according to you, OP, and he's not 'tech savvy' either. Something needs to change there because he will get himself into all sorts of bother if he abdicates his responsibility as a consumer like this.

As others have said, Amazon is great with refunds and very clear in T&C.

Bolograph · 12/06/2016 12:16

He didn't want to purchase prime. He wanted next day delivery but wasn't aware it was part of Amazon prime

The account had had a free trial of prime, so it is perfectly reasonable to assume the account holder understood. That you are sharing an account is your problem, not amazon's. And had he been using his own account he would have got a free trial in this scenario anyway. If you choose to share an account, the sequences are your choice.

Thingvellir · 12/06/2016 12:16

Have you cancelled the free trial yet OP?

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 12:16

No he's not a great reader

He has dyslexia which has improved slightly with my patient help but he still struggles. He doesn't shop online much

OP posts:
bakeoffcake · 12/06/2016 12:17

Yanbu!

Amazon are known for doing this. It's very easy to press the button and not know what you've actually signed up to. I use Amazon several times a week and a few days ago I pressed a button which I thought was asking if I wanted next day delivery, the next thing it says I've signed up for PrimeAngry

I went straight to my account and cancelled it.

If you goggle there's loads of people it's happened to.

NeedACleverNN · 12/06/2016 12:17

Have you cancelled the free trial yet OP?

HmmGrin yes! I have! No flies on me.

Whathaveilost · 12/06/2016 12:17

Saying you have nothing to hide is just silly'
Your DH had a suprise to hide from you.
It's not like cloak and dagger stuff by having a separate customer account y'know!
