AIBU worry about my DS sleeping on the floor

My STB 4yr old has decided tonight to sleep on the floor next to his bed, he's taken his pillows and duvet and is fast asleep now

he's done this once or twice before, he gets quite hot at night and I wonder if he feels a bit cooler on the floor? Or if it's just a novelty? In the past I've put him back on his bed when I've got to sleep, but this seems to confuse him a bit and he's woken up in the night upset and come to my room

It doesn't feel right to let him sleep on the floor? But should I just let him if it's not very often, just make sure it doesn't become a habit? Or will it cause him problems sleeping on the floor? Aches and pains type things? Confused

Presumably our ancestors didn't have beds and everyone slept on the ground. I'd just let him get on with it. (Full disclosure - I'm not a parent.)

Ilovenannyplum · 10/06/2016 21:27

Id be inclined to just leave him there too to be honest.
If he's uncomfortable he'll wake up surely?

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/06/2016 21:30

Most of the world doesn't sleep in mattressed beds. DD used to do it and I didn't see any harm.

zoobeedoo · 10/06/2016 21:30

Sounds like you have a baby Bear Grylls

Sleepingbunnies · 10/06/2016 21:31

I used to sleep on the floor all the time :)

Even now if I can't sleep in bed if I get on the floor I'm asleep in seconds!

My dad used to find me sleeping in all sorts of weird places!

Senpai · 10/06/2016 21:31

Let sleeping dogs lie...

roarfeckingroar · 10/06/2016 21:32

I did this for years as a child. Don't worry x

BrianCoxReborn · 10/06/2016 21:35

What's STB?

lemonbon2 · 10/06/2016 21:38

briancox 'soon to be' sorry!

I must say my instinct was to leave him, he's obviously comfortable there, he was asleep in seconds!

Apparently my dad exclusively slept on the floor for about half his childhood!

Thanks for your thoughts :)

My son does that occasionally (he's a teenager!) and he likes to sleep on the sofa too on weekends. No idea why but I've never worried about it, except to say don't sleep right up against the radiator in the winter. 🔥☺️

ImRealitySoTheOthersCanFuckOff · 10/06/2016 21:41

All three of mine have done this at times. Ds1 did it for months when he was four or five.

Comingfoccacia · 10/06/2016 21:41

In Korea and Japan it's the norm to sleep on the floor. My kids just slept on duvets on the floor when they stayed at my mums, up until they were about 4. Supposed to be good for your back too!

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 10/06/2016 21:42

Our DS is off to nursery in September. It's a montessori school and they all nap on little mattresses on the floor.

Gabilan · 10/06/2016 21:45

I used to do this. Sometimes if I was too hot but often I just preferred it.

LBOCS2 · 10/06/2016 21:46

DSS took to sleeping on the floor in a pop up tent when he was around that age. We just let him get on with it - until he complained that his back had started to hurt after three or four nights!

BrianCoxReborn · 10/06/2016 21:46

Ah thanks OP! I couldn't work it out at all. I was frowning hard

I'd move him to bed and put a light sheet over him. My son is 3 and wouldn't wake, or if he did he'd settle back quickly. So it depends whether you have a light sleeper or not.

He'll come to no harm on the floor, he must be comfy to have fallen asleep there.

Muddlingalongalone · 10/06/2016 21:47

My 5 year old dd does it.
If I'm really lucky she puts the pop up sun tent up to sleep in during the holidays so that she's camping (& I'm falling over it to get to drawers & wardrobe)

PatMustardsMoustache · 10/06/2016 21:47

I've one here asleep under her bed.

Makes her nest and drifts off singing...

It's really quite cosy under there, I can totally see the attraction.

After 3 non sleepers I am no longer fussed where they sleep, as long as they do sleep! Grin

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2016 21:49

My 4 yo DD died this from time to time too. She also gets too hot in bed. She's quite happy on the floor, so I leave her there.

SparklesandBangs · 10/06/2016 21:55

Leave him there. As a child (and now) I was a restless sleeper and often fell out of my small single bed then spent the rest of the night on the floor. At first my DP picked me up but after a while they just made sure the floor area was clear and kept me in a low bed.

CakeNinja · 10/06/2016 21:56

I slept on the floor pretty much 90% of the time as a child. It's so lovely, all the freedom to move around without constraints.

When dp and I first had our DC, we lived in a tiny one bedroom flat and had a sofa bed for ourselves in the front room. Sometimes we just slept with me on the floor and dp on the sofa. It was absolutely blissful!
It would seem wrong to do away with my bed completely but I have been known to get a spare duvet and stretch out for the night on the floor in recent times. I feel it's so good for my back somehow.

clarrrp · 10/06/2016 22:16

I wouldn#t worry about it. One of mine went through a phase where she would only sleep on cushions inside a fort erected in her bedroom.

ImRealitySoTheOthersCanFuckOff · 10/06/2016 22:18

I've just remembered ds2 slept in a box for about six weeks last year. He loved it.

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2016 22:20

Oh dear, I obviously meant, in my previous post, that DD does this, not DD died from this!

JsOtherHalf · 10/06/2016 22:30

Ds decided to sleep on the floor tonight. He's 9.

I left him to it.
