Summer does not mean men can remove their shirts in Tescos!

Went to Tescos. A family of 4 males walked past from ages maybe 6 up to 60 and all of them were topless and sweaty. Why is that acceptable all of a sudden to be effectively wearing beachwear while in a supermarket just cause it's hot? Would I be allowed to walk in bare chested or in a bikini?

One of them leant against the deli counter and left a sweat imprint from their chest. Confused

I think indoors it's particularly bad. It's not about if they have a nice physique or not it's just not acceptable in places like the town centre or inside businesses surely?

AIBU to be really irritated by this?

I can't stand seeing all these men in shorts either, It really is a personal bugbear of mine and probably totally unreasonable.

It's not that men shouldn't wear shorts, but for some reason, a lot of British men look ridiculous in them. They don't do shorts very well.
Unlike our forrin' cuzzins, who somehow usually manage to look stylish in shorts.

Littledafty · 10/06/2016 19:21

Eurgh....horrible!
The town I grew up in has a guy like this. Me and my sister call him playperson because he looks like he's got hair you could lift off, like a playmobil man.
Anyway a blink of sun and he's out wandering round the supermarket, in the briefest of shorts, flip flops and nothing else.
He must do a lot of weights as he's got one of those torsos that he can't put his arms down because the gargantuan pecs, covered by a vast amount of chest rug.
My mum usually phones me to let me know she's spotted him strutting round and she always says she thinks it's 'very unhygienic'

Sparklingbrook · 10/06/2016 19:24

Ewww. The thing is supermarkets are not as warm as outside and you need a coat down the chiller aisles sometimes.

I don't want chest hair/sweat in my fruit and veg.

PreciousVagine · 10/06/2016 19:24

There'll be far worse things than chest sweat on surfaces in supermarkets Grin

Alconleigh · 10/06/2016 20:47

It's rough as fuck, no two ways about it. There should be laws, frankly.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/06/2016 20:52

This really bothers me too. A person with the most gorgeous non-sweaty physique would provoke the same reaction in me too.

I also have a problem with being served in a cafe or pub by women in vest tops. Just don't like it.

oliviaclottedcream · 11/06/2016 08:03

I wouldn't give it another thought OP. Maryjo it seems is applying the "I'm offended" mantra: straight out of the Social Justice Warrior's textbook of grievance and finding fault with everyone and everything. She/he'll grow out of it...

echt · 11/06/2016 08:22

It gets as hot as a hot thing in Au, and you don't see people shopping topless. You can get turned away for bare feet, too.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 11/06/2016 08:31

I went to Whitstable last week and there had naked action men attached to the fences and gates as you come off the beach with a sign saying 'Put a top on as you leave the beach!' from the town council Grin

jonsnowssocks · 11/06/2016 08:32

Do women actually breastfeed in the supermarket though? In theory I'm all for breastfeeding wherever and whenever, but surely doing it standing up in a busy produce aisle would be difficult?

YANBU OP. Beach or park is one thing, but they should definitely cover up for shopping!

Savagebeauty · 11/06/2016 08:34

Sweaty tendrils of armpit hairShock

HerBigChance · 11/06/2016 08:34

It's rough as fuck, and oddly aggressive when groups of men do it. They should keep their tops on in public places like this.

Beaches are fine, parks okayish. But not supermarkets, shopping centres and town centres. Too bad if they don't like being told so.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 11/06/2016 08:35

What is wrong with vest tops?

Tesco will enforce their summer policy of no top or no shoes and no entry soon, so the problem will solve itself. It doesn't tend to bother me anyway... Sometimes I'm a bit jealous that men can cool off so much easier but I need a bra and a top at the minimum!

Then again I'm probably inadvertently offending everyone with my vest tops.

AGruffaloCrumble · 11/06/2016 08:39

Yes, DD2 loves to have a snack whilst we're shopping and DD1 doesn't allow me to sit down whilst doing it. Stretchy wraps are my best pal.

do you complain about decency when women breast feed in public.
I can guarantee you I have far, far less skin out than a topless man whilst breastfeeding. My exposed skin is also serving a purpose that topless men are not. They aren't even comparable situations.

HerBigChance · 11/06/2016 08:41

Vest tops are absolutely fine, on either sex.

SenoritaViva · 11/06/2016 08:52

Revolting. Had it standing in the bank queue the other day, he was standing so close behind me I could hear the squelch of sweat as his arms moved. Urgh

ShowOfHands · 11/06/2016 09:06

You should move here. The strap on ds's sandal snapped as we walked home and it was unwearable. We still had 2 miles to walk. We were passing Tesco so went in (me carrying ds). I had to put him down to sort through the shoes to find a replacement pair. I was rounded on immediately and told ds couldn't be in store shoeless and to leave. I showed them the sandal in my bag. I explained I'd pick him up and carry him to the tills. Nope. Told to leave.

This is utterly true.

DS was 3 btw.

jonsnowssocks · 11/06/2016 09:08

AGruffalo I take my hat off to you! I'll hopefully be breastfeeding soon and it seems like a mountain to climb just being able to manage it at all, let alone while multitasking! Smile

MiracletoCome · 11/06/2016 09:16

I hate it also, and skimpy vest tops on males and females in supermarkets. Shorts are OK as long as they are a reasonable length but I certainly don't want to see someone's arse hanging out while I am choosing my food.

So YANBU

pigsDOfly · 11/06/2016 09:16

Well, if you think bare chests are bad, you would have loved the man I saw in Barcelona a number of years ago.

Striding down Las Ramblas as bold as you like there he was, heavily tanned, wearing what looked like a pair of very tight black shorts, got closer and realized it was actually a tattoo; round the front he had a very small posing pouch type thing covering his penis. Don't know if it covered his testicles as well as I didn't look that close.

It was not pretty.

SenoritaViva · 11/06/2016 09:22

You're right pigs, I would've loved to see that, hilarious!

3dogsandacat · 11/06/2016 09:24

It's rough as fuck,

True. Not only in the shops, but walking round town in general shirtless looks scrubby..

It doesn't seem out of place when builders do it on a building site, on a really hot day.

There's a time and place for everything.

Yabu

It's the lads in summer. It's what they do. Smug lads.

Much the same happened to me in a tesco, on route home from a doctors appointment where DS's shirt had to be cut off him because of a allergic reaction the only chemist open was in tesco, doctor had rung ahead for us to check they had all of the 4/5 things prescribed as some were some odd dressings and had even said clothes had been cut off child because he knew they were a bit strict,Child none verbal and none mobile so was being carried and very obviously in pain and the reason was very obvious.
They wouldn't let us in, I had to drive for about 60 mins in the direction I didnt need to be.

Haven't set foot in the place since

bibbitybobbityyhat · 11/06/2016 09:30

I said being served food by people in vest tops not vest tops per se. Why not read the words in front of you?
