to think it might look ridiculous, but want it anyway?

Maybe more of a WWYD....

DH and I are in the market for some new windows. We're ridiculously excited by this as we've had single glazed windows since we've moved in. We live in a 1970/80s semi and both neighbours have brown windows and a brown door. DH is desperate for our house to match theirs and thinks it would look 'smart' if we were in keeping with the neighbours.

I, however, would really love to have a sage green door, which I think will only work with white windows. I'm a bit worried that it's too trendy and 'cottagey' for our house. I'm potentially happy to settle for a grey door (have attached images of both the grey and green) but worry whether either option would affect re-sale value (not sure if this is our 'forever home')

AIBU to push for what i want or should I just accept that on this for once DH may be right?

I would match the door frame to the door, I think that it looks better.
So green door, green frame. White Windows better than brown imho.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 05/06/2016 15:04

Every door on our street is sage green or grey (except ours). Why not be a bit more original?

EnidButton · 05/06/2016 15:07

I agree with you OP. I don't like brown Windows. We're looking at composite doors atm too and I like the green. It goes very nicely with red brick. I think the style of the door is more important.

Unless you plan to move in the m cut five years, just get what you like. It's not going to be that outrageous that it'll put people off and it'll make you happy when you see it.

Fairylea · 05/06/2016 15:08

White surrounds will add resale value. People love white. Green or grey door etc it really doesn't matter. I prefer the green.

EnidButton · 05/06/2016 15:08

Tinkly The OP is being original if the rest of her street have brown doors.

MrsTickleMonster · 05/06/2016 15:09

Tinkly we live in a cul-de-sac with 35 houses, mix of brown and white windows but only 3 coloured doors, none grey or green! everyone else's doors match their windows. we might be trendsetters on the grey/green front!

Also if you want to see the doors in situ, go and have a nosy around a new new build estate, they use those composite doors now I've found.

Goingtobeawesome · 05/06/2016 15:14

I think our window sills are brown outside but we have white inside to add light.

Don't match the neighbour's. I reckon 99% of streets have all different. Sometimes every house is different Wink.

queenMab99 · 05/06/2016 15:15

White is never out of fashion, and will look smart compared to neighbours.

FranHastings · 05/06/2016 15:18

We inherited brown frames on a previous house and I hated them every single day. White every time for me.

You've made me want to paint my (very shabby) front door now too. Grin

OohMavis · 05/06/2016 15:23

How pissed off would you be if you went with brown and in six months' time one of your neighbours replaced their windows with nice, shiny white ones? Grin

That's what he needs to consider.

VulcanWoman · 05/06/2016 15:34

I've got my eye on a sage one too. All the same will look like someone's property portfolio.

newname99 · 05/06/2016 15:42

I loathe brown frames and would not buy a house with them or reduce the price so I could replace. My friends husband persuaded her to have brown frame frame and she regrets it bitterly.

White all the time

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 05/06/2016 15:42

Another vote for white Windows and sage door! Looks great!

MadameDePomPom · 05/06/2016 15:44

Brown window frames are hideous.

MadameDePomPom · 05/06/2016 15:46

Yellow front doors are my favourite though.

Oldraver · 05/06/2016 15:50

We live in a street where most of the houses were built with brown frames and the ones that have changed to white are much nicer.

The sage door will set it off nicely...there are lots of white doors where I am and it looks very bland

Our cluster of 7 houses had a mixture of red/blue/white doors...two have changed to white front and garage door

I much prefer the grey one myself, but they all look fine. As for it "not working" when others have all brown, personally I think white and a muted colour would simply make yours look better. Unless it's essential for the style of the house I'm afraid I just think brown looks dark and dingy

SquinkiesRule · 05/06/2016 17:43

Our street is 70's houses, everyone has the white windows and edges to the door, but one has a dark blue door, one has pale blue and one further down has red/dark red the rest of us are white doors. I'd love a sage green.

Portobelly · 05/06/2016 17:53

Your husband is right.
Whilst I like the white and sage green I strongly think that the overall impression, not only of your house, but also your street, will be improved by sticking with the same style as your near neighbours.
The unified look is smarter.
And the sage green and white combo you are looking at is a Victorian house.
Is the brickwork the same colour as your house?

I'd argue the same if you were living in a Victorian terrace and fancied brown casement windows.

Respect the original architecture -whichever period it is- and the uniformity of the street scape, and use landscaping, planting and good maintenance to express your individuality.

Portobelly · 05/06/2016 17:56

Edit. The photo obviously isn't of a Victorian house. But that colour combo makes me think that what it wants to be

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/06/2016 18:05

Your neighbours will be so envious, it's only a matter of time before they replace their windows and doors with the white/green combo.

gabsdot · 05/06/2016 19:51

I like that green door. We bought a new front door last year and we considered getting something like that but in the end we got a black Georgian style. We felt that the modern door would date more quickly and look old fashioned.
Definitely get white windows though.

MrsTickleMonster · 05/06/2016 19:55

Seems almost unanimous Grin just need to pick which door now! DH is on board after showing him the thread so getting it ordered tomorrow..Thanks for all the advice x
