Our bank account has been cleared out

Today my DH said 'why do we have no money??'
I told him not to be so ridiculous, because we have been working really hard to save money and build up a buffer in our account. So I looked at our bank account: available balance £14.

Someone has used almost £2000 on Next and Foot Asylum purchases, with a pizza and a dessert order thrown in Angry.

The irony is that I never buy from Next because we can't afford for me to buy new clothes. I only ever buy from charity shops or (very rarely) Primark. So the fraud claim is very easy to prove. That and the fact that the man on the phone from the bank had to tell me what Foot Asylum is Grin.

The transactions were all in the last day or so, and were all made using DH's card. We also had a letter today from Next, addressed to a man we've never heard of, thanking him for advising them if his change of address. So Next have given us a fraud case ID number and have put a block on account applications from our address. The bank fraud team will contact us tomorrow.

How gutting. We're lucky that DD1's DLA gets paid into a different account, so we can use that for a few days and reimburse it when we get reimbursed by the bank. If it got paid into the same account we'd be absolutely done for.

Oh no how awful Angry
My cards was cloned a couple years ago . Santander phoned DH to asks if it was any off us using it. We only had a few hundred in the account but it was all the money we had before payday and still had direct debits to come out.
It was used to send flowers , book a spa day, buy a tv and they tried to book a hotel. I think at this point there was no money left and it got flagged.
Bastards.
The bank was very good and replaced the money immediately.

Awful. Hope you get it sorted quickly.

It's happened to me twice but very low level. My card got cloned this year in a Lloyds Bank cash point that's actually inside the branch. It was a brand new card I'd had three days and I'd only used it once in that machine so it was easy for my bank (nationwide) to see where it happened. They spotted fraudulent activity before I did and phoned me. The time before they called me to ask if I was on 5th Avenue, New York trying to buy lots of stuff in a department store. It was a bank holiday and I was sadly in my local Tesco when they called me Envy

Luis we're lucky that we don't keep all of our money in the same account so we'll be fine, thank you. DH's card has been cancelled and a new one issued, with a new PIN. Once that arrives, I'll request a new one, even though mine wasn't compromised - just to be safe.

This is going to totally out me.

DH had a phone call from HSBC fraud squad the other day. Somebody had tried to use his business card to pay for a £600 Saga holiday.

Card was cancelled straight away.

My bank account got hacked while I was having DD2. I didnt check my bank account for a week after (understandably a little busy). I logged on expecting to see a healthy balance and was stunned to find I was £4000 in debit, What confused me was that, as well as things going out there were some unexplained money being paid in. Anyway after a phonecall to Lloyds where a highly hormonal me explained to the poor bloke on the other end of the line that i couldnt have spent the money as I had been giving birth and I hated dominoes pizza. I got refunded all the money that was in debit and made £400 as it turned out that they had been using my account to online gamble. Their winning were paid back...into my account!

Oh I feel for you. I had my card used a few months ago to buy petrol and then get cash back. Cheeky cheeky bastards they are.
The bank will sort it all. You'll get your money back no problem.
It does make you feel a bit violated though I thought.

How awful for you! I hope you mange to get it resolved. I was really hoping you were going to say that they were foolish enough to put their own address down.

Good job you spotted it so quickly. There were a few years when I had no concept of money management and would just assume when I had no money left I had spent it all on drink. I bet that happens to people and they don't realise it

I had this happen twice, once at Notting Hill Carnival my credit card size purse was nicked and within space of an hour the thieves had spent £800 in shops in Kensington high Street.

The second time was in a bar, boyfriend of a close friend of mine, we were all out, he "stormed out" (he was prone to storming out) and next thing I knew an hour later my purse had been nicked and cashpoint used to withdraw £250. I stupidly left my PIN number in my purse as I didn't remember it. Thief a few weeks later got caught out as we were in a pub talking about it and he said "oh it's a good thing they didn't use your Abbey card isn't it?!" I looked at him didn't say anything but I hadn't told anyone about the Abbey card being in the purse Hmm

Strangely enough in both cases I got both sets of money back even with my PIN number being there, fraud and theft and police were very good.

DH card got done but we've no idea where. Luckily they tried a series of transactions at stupid am in places we never shop. The bank picked it up before we even saw it.

OP, hope it's sorted soon. What I don't understand is - when the stuff is delivered to you, how do they benefit? Confused

Oof, lougle. Glad you have some backup funds, and that the spends were flagged as unusual. I think banks - and some stores - are a lot more savvy about ID theft these days. I'm always quite grateful when the bank texts me to ask if I intended to buy stuff from a new seller.

A card of mine was cloned by a posh restaurant, years ago. Once I'd managed to convince the bank fraud guy I wasn't on an epicurean tour of France because I was in my office in London, we had an enjoyable conversation about how much fun the thief was having while we ... weren't.

They reimbursed within 10 days, and might be even faster now. Hope so!

Mine was cloned at a petrol station twice. I only ever get cash out inside a bank, or as cash back at the supermarket now. And I only get my petrol from the supermarket too. :(

they get the stuff delivered to a click & collect pick up point - all you need to pick stuff up is often the email with your order number.

Report
HarrietSchulenberg · 04/06/2016 23:37

They get away with the deliveries by having an accomplice who is a delivery driver, or they themselves are delivery drivers so know which shops to use. They just record the parcels as "delivered".

I've had it happen a few times, the bank have always picked it up quickly. The first time they made a £50 donation to charity before trying to pay a £1000+ credit card bill, cheeky buggers!

This happened to me and my bank ( first direct ) also picked it up quickly . They put through the first payment for £50 for online gambling, but then there were several within a few minutes for hundreds and they were blocked immediately . Presumably because these were unusual transactions for me !

Then the bank called me straight away.

Thicko Alert

So are the cloned cards sold on? Otherwise how can someone in Devon (say) have their "card" used in Paris or NY?

I am very naive I know, because when people talk about buying drugs or stolen goods or a cloned credit card, I often wonder how they get to know these people! I cant imagine getting into conversation in the pub and saying "Any idea where I can get a nicked card from for my holiday in Paris next week?" yet surely some people must do that!

Bloody bastards. I hope it is all dealt with swiftly.

We had our credit card details nicked about 7 years ago now. As we use the card all the time to get the points rewards Tesco were very quick to freeze the account as they knew our spending habits.

The thieves had used it in carphone warehouse for £1 clearly to test the card, then topped up a payg mobile with £50. They then ordered £400 of clothing on-line, entered our home address but asked for a different delivery address. The delivery address was in a dodgy area in London (we are in Yorkshire) so Tesco froze it.

I only found out as moments after the freeze I went to buy a £50 headboard online and I had a phone call from the shop to say contact your card issuer. I was shocked that £50 was rejected, I should have been able to spend loads.

Tescos were fab about it, cancelled and issued a new card and wrote off the transactions that weren't ours. It does mean they double check stuff, ie make us confirm it is us making the purchase, but I would rather they did that than let it go through.

Yes people sell them on, years ago I worked in a shop that was raided (big high street name) at the time the whole card number was printed on the credit slip that came out of the card machine, one of the staff was taking down the numbers and selling them on - they had done it hundreds of times.

That was when chip & pin had first come in - now days the credit slip only shows the first or last few digits of the card details so they find other ways to do it.
