to think that it should be permissable to park transit vans and similar sized commercial vehicles anywhere that cars can be parked?

Given that transit vans are not much smaller than some of the 4x4 monsters that people are perfectly happy to drive down to Asda and not much else?

Yes or no answers much appreciated.

I don't mind vans being parked in residential areas, the two parked in my street are parked well so that both cars and pedestriana can pass. There is one bloke round the corner who parks his very large van on a bend, all the way on the pavement often forcing me to walk a toddler and buggy into the road to get past. They have a drive, which the van would fit on, but he parks his shiny sports car on it....Hmm I get the rage every time I walk past!

Bluewombler2k · 05/06/2016 07:44

Only just seen this. Yes, it's fine if you are a resident.

Bluewombler2k · 05/06/2016 07:59

Oh, and doing your job.

nagynolonger · 05/06/2016 08:10

Ideally no. But not every one can catch a bus, jump in a car or walk to work with everything they need for the day in one bag.

We all need people who work at the manual trades. Members of my family can be on call day and night seven days a week. They need to get to site quickly when the power goes off. Fortunately they can park off road so their is minimal inconvenience to our neighbours. I'm sure one or two do think it 'lowers the tone' a bit. I think the same about their caravans.

Vans don't look pretty but neither do wheelie bins. We all create rubbish and we all use electricity and water etc.. We can't choose our neighbours' occupation.

nagynolonger · 05/06/2016 08:16

Sorry about the 'their'.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/06/2016 08:25

It's absolutely fine. Of course it is.

I hate seeing my neighbours caravan on his drive. It's opposite us. I think if you have a caravan it should have to be kept on a park. But vans. Meh. No one would be happy if their prices went up!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/06/2016 08:32

I'm probably slightly biased though. My dad used to drive a van and live near a school. If he parked the van on the drive the blithering idiots on the school run would park opposite the drive so that it would be impossible to get off due to the angle.

In fact we quite often had to move our cars onto the road if we were going out at school time due to that.

You can't just assume it's the van driver being inconsiderate. It could be other road users being inconsiderate and putting the driver in a catch 22.

RandyMagnum · 05/06/2016 10:55

Got stuff from my solicitors the other day to do with house purchase, was pleased to read there's a restriction on parking vans, and caravans on the estate.

Had two years of living next to someone who used up all their off street parking with a fucking massive caravan and other shit, so made whatever parking was left much harder than it needed to be.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 05/06/2016 11:00

Oh but Hunter, if the cars opposite the drive were parked there legally, then that's ok?

It's what people say about the vans here - if they are parked legally then it should be ok.

Sauce for the goose sauce for the gander.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/06/2016 11:18

I think people should be considerate.

Near me there is a nice wide road, no yellow lines etc where somebody has started parking three large lorries (not artic, but high - those half size ones you get for removals etc) and two vans. No driveways, few other people park there.

But they're parking in front of a nursing home, with a small garden and a small wall at the front and a pretty park across the road (their parking is at the side and back). It's making some of the rooms darker, and the residents can't see the park any more.

I do think that is selfish - cars are at least much lower. The council are looking into it, but they're still there - in fact there was another van last time I passed!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 05/06/2016 11:29

It's interesting to read that there are estates in this country that effectively ban tradespeople from living there! Talk about keeping the riff-raff out.

Parked legally but still idiots.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/06/2016 11:41

But nothing parking up to their bumper didn't fix 😂

CinderellaRockefeller · 05/06/2016 11:45

I never realised this was a thing. Our neighbour parks his big transit van outside his house. Occasionally outside ours too, although not often.

Wouldn't occur to me to get irate about it.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 05/06/2016 11:46

You don't see the irony in the situation?

ApostrophesMatter · 05/06/2016 11:49

A lot of houses in our village have a covenant about no commercial vehicles or caravans on drives or on the road. The lanes are very narrow so it would be a nightmare if they parked on the road.

Some houses are very close together so a caravan or van on the drive would cut out a lot of light from the neighbour's house.

I guess these reasons are why the covenant exists. No one seems to have a problem with it.

AddictedToCoYo · 05/06/2016 11:54

Hmm. Tricky. On old style wider streets maybe, but the problem is with modern developments where parking space is at a massive premium anyway and house frontages are shallow and proper pavements often non-existent, it's not nice to have someone else's huge work vehicle right in front of your window because the space outside their own house is taken up with their two private cars. It's often a covenant on new estates but one I find is flouted with impunity anyway.

I just thank my lucky stars I can afford to live in a road with sufficient off-street parking for everyone. But we are looking to downsize when DH retires and I know it's going to be tricky to find a smaller house in our area that doesn't have this sort of problem, or a lack of off street parking altogether.

limitedperiodonly · 05/06/2016 12:01

I don't have a driveway or a car. Every fucker parks outside my house

cruikshank · 05/06/2016 12:02

They are no worse than those massive range rover/similar status symbols that a certain type of middle class wanker parents seem to insist on driving (for those dangerous off-road conditions that one encounters in Sainsbury's car parks, obvs). And unlike the 4x4 wanker-mobiles, at least a van serves a practical purpose.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 05/06/2016 12:05

I think it is all about consideration for others.

Where there is only on street parking people will be used to it and have less of a problem. Where there is plenty of off street parking the vans should be parked off street and cars on street.

Leaving your van parked on the street because you don't want to inconvenience your own precious self with moving vehicles about whilst complaining about how precious your neighbours are for not liking it is a bit hypocritical.

limitedperiodonly · 05/06/2016 12:12

I'm a middle class wanker cruikshank. If I had a car and lots of money I'd choose a Porsche Cayenne. I'd park it on the street next to my neighbour's van.

WeAllHaveWings · 05/06/2016 12:20

dh has a long/high transit van. he parks in our residential area, but parks in a space which is a bit away from any houses even if there is a space closer.

its inconsiderate to park a van in front of someone's houses if it means when they look out their window all they see is the side of a van.

StubblyLegs · 05/06/2016 13:33

The NIMBYs are out in force here aren't they?

Those that avail themselves of trades that typically use vans (plumbers, decorators, electricians etc), but don't want 'the help' living parking on their roads, remind me of Upstairs, Downstairs. Complete and utter snobbery.

I find it's much more of a problem the way fuckwits with tiny cars Micras, Corsas etc park like twats and selfishly take up enough space for a van.

cruikshank · 05/06/2016 13:37

Not sure what a Porsche Cayenne is but I hope it will make you happy, limitedperiod only.

limitedperiodonly · 05/06/2016 14:50

It's a big and very expensive people carrier cruikshank but as I say, my usual modes of transport are my feet or the bus. I'm happy enough and I don't mind who parks on the street outside my house or what class they are. You could be a tradesperson and also own a very expensive 4x4. My BIL does.
