to think that it should be permissable to park transit vans and similar sized commercial vehicles anywhere that cars can be parked?

Given that transit vans are not much smaller than some of the 4x4 monsters that people are perfectly happy to drive down to Asda and not much else?

Yes or no answers much appreciated.

bibbity

In most cases of this that I am aware of people don't like parking the vans outside their own house because of two reasons.

1/ They don't like looking out at a van from their windows.
and
2/ They CBA to move vehicles around

If its 1 why would anyone else want to look at it, and if its 2 they should stop being so lazy and give some consideration to other people.

Helmetbymidnight · 04/06/2016 22:01

Eight weeks- a van was left outside my house.
When I eventually found owner and asked him to move it, he said, I've got six vans- I've gotta park them somewhere...
That pissed me off.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 04/06/2016 22:04

Have you ever had someone with a commercial vehicle come and do some work on your house SirChenjin? Where do you think they park that vehicle? In some business park miles away from home ... or what?

My plumber, electrician and the builders we had in all have drives in which to park their work vehicles. Presumably because they earn a decent living and can afford a property with adequate parking for their needs.

SirChenjin · 04/06/2016 22:09

I can't say I have ever looked at my tradesmen's vehicles and actually given where they park their van any thought, but now you've mentioned it I hope that they are showing their neighbour's some consideration. That do you?

CharlieSierra · 04/06/2016 22:10

Some of you have very odd ideas

I don't think it's odd to object to someone parking a van outside someone else's place so they don't have to look at it themselves, like my postie, she was being a selfish arse. So is horse box woman down the road, she should make proper arrangement to keep something like that, and so are all the people who regularly park so selfishly they take up 2 spaces. It's just a matter of consideration for other people.

Tartsamazeballs · 04/06/2016 22:11

I saw a lorry that had a bumper sticker saying "Don't like lorries on the road? Then stop buying stuff"

Probably a fair reply to people who piss and moan about vans. You can't park a van in a carpark miles from your house- you won't be insured and all the stuff inside will be targeted by thieves. It's a part of life.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 04/06/2016 22:11

Yes, show their neighbours some consideration is fine. Just like anyone parking any vehicle.

SirChenjin · 04/06/2016 22:12

No, commercial vehicles are not like any vehicle.

Noodledoodledoo · 04/06/2016 22:13

When we have work done on the house, if we are both home - normally one is at work, we move one of the cars off the drive to the van can be parked there.

When we had a friend park and get a cab to the airport we put the cars on the drive in such a way that we could fit 3 on - it was a pain for a week but caused us problems not our neighbours.

Sadly too many vans are not parked with consideration for their impact on other road users.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2016 22:13

Yes they are.

In some cases they're smaller than a whopping great people carrier.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 04/06/2016 22:14

Newes. Where I live in a pretty average suburb of London a mid terraced house without a drive will cost you upwards of £900,000. Thousands of inner cities were built before the invention of the motor vehicle.

I think if you have 4 vans as a business owner then you should rent premises to park them.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/06/2016 22:15

Commercial vehicles aren't the same as any vehicle. They're big and you can't see through them.

Op, is there any vehicle that you'd be unhappy to have parked outside your house for every hour outside the regular working day? Articulated truck, a bus?

Newes · 04/06/2016 22:15

Hmmm, I can see round a people carrier to pull out the drive. Vans? Not so much.

SirChenjin · 04/06/2016 22:16

No they aren't. A people carrier is smaller than a transit van, for example.

Lilmisskittykat · 04/06/2016 22:16

I hate them with a passion where I live a very large housing association expects their workers to take their massive vans home as they are too mean to play for a hauliers yard... It's awful.

They block the light, take the space of two cars and usually park in a way that causes trouble to other road users...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 04/06/2016 22:16

No.

Babysafari · 04/06/2016 22:21

Well they may not look pretty but they are essential.

I don't know why a business owner would have a fleet of vans parked on one street as presumably the vans would need to be in use and the employees wouldn't be collecting their vans from their boss's house each day.

Dhs job is absolutely essential to things you use everyday without you even giving it a second thought. There aren't many companies that do it and if he didn't do his job a van would be the least of your worries.

Emochild · 04/06/2016 22:22

There's a transit parked outside my house on google earth Grin

I don't mind vans parking where they need to park, just wish they wouldn't park so close to junctions

They need to be at least double the legal requirement distance away so people can see

Babysafari · 04/06/2016 22:26

Again I repeat, very often employees 'base' can be miles in the opposite direction to where they might be working. They only go to base once a fortnight to collect parts.

They have to take their vans home because they will be going straight onto a job the next day.

Do you think that all these tradespeople meet in an office at 9am each morning?

mirrorballs · 04/06/2016 22:27

Yes babysafari the employees collect the vans from our street each working day one with the equipment they need for the day from his garage, so over the weekend the vans are usually all here. He started out on his own and has grown his business over the last few years so I assume he's not in a position to rent premises/parking at the moment.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/06/2016 22:28

Not overnight, no.

SirChenjin · 04/06/2016 22:29

I think that most of us can grasp the fact that vans are a necessary evil, but they should be parked considerately at all times (preferably on the owner's driveway where possible).

Babysafari · 04/06/2016 22:31

What do they do mirrorballs leave their cars in the street? Annoying but I suppose business people have to start somewhere.

Dh parks his on the drive but one neighbour still moans that it blocks her light. He hasn't got much choice it's his job.
