Mayonaise - Why is it slathered over everything ???

Am I the only person totally pissed off that when ever I order a sandwich etc anywhere it comes totally slathered in masses of mayo even though
there is no mention of it on the menu. I don't like mayo and if I see it on the menu I ask for my food without it. I also ask 'does this have mayo on it'?
So why the hell do they insist on trying to feed it me using excuses such as
'there is only a bit' 'all our sandwiches have mayo on them' If I ask for NO MAYO this is what I want.

Eleven years in this country and I've concluded that Britiah people like their sandwiches soggy and the flavour of their food obscured.

I miss the BLTs of my homeland - well-cooked bacon, sliced tomatoes and crisp lettuce. Divine. But then pre made sandwiches aren't really a big thing there, you order your sandwich fresh at a sandwich shop.

I don't like mayonnaise in most sandwiches, either.

You can't seemed get away from the stuff. But at least it isn't routinely served with chips, like it is in Belgium.

I don't like margarine. You try avoiding margarine on ready-made or even made-to-order sandwiches (yick). I can't even train DH not to put the ruddy margarine on what would be an otherwise lovely mayo sarnie. I suppose his habits are great for keeping me on a diet, at least.

I hate mayonaise but love duck and hoisin wraps - local Tesco has stopped doing them Sad.

MyKidsAreTakingMySanity · 04/06/2016 20:59

I've completely given up on finding tasty pre-made sandwiches that don't contain mayo or some other nasty sauce/slop. BLT's never came with mayo when I was a nipper, maybe it was the times or maybe it was the area I grew up in but they were my go-to butty.

Loulou2kent · 04/06/2016 21:04

Yay. I'm not alone. This does really annoy me at times. I hate Mayo & it seems to be in every sandwich, wrap, panini or roll. I go through the list of ingredients like yep, yep, yes, Ohhhh yes...errrr No.... Sad

Mayo is the devils pus.

Many is the time I've ended up with a greasy cheese and onion pasty or sausage roll because it's the only lunch thing in the shop I can guarantee hasn't got mayo on it. I also hope M and S never discontinue their Wensleydale and carrot chutney sandwich as its one of the few really tasty Mayo free sandwiches I've ever found.

TheCrumpettyTree · 04/06/2016 21:25

I don't like mayo. It ruins sandwiches.

lostscot · 04/06/2016 21:51

Def not bu, Mayo is the work of the devil! I don't understand why everything comes covered in it Hmm

Agree with you, OP.
I can tolerate small amounts myself, but my son can't. A choice would be nice. Mayonnaise just makes everything taste the same, IME.
And mayo with chips? Salt and vinegar is the traditional British condiment for chips.

Karoleann · 05/06/2016 18:56

I don't understand it either, it has the texture of phlegm and the taste is just completely wrong. I really get irritated when I pop in someone where to get a sandwich and there is nothing which isn't laden with mayo.
Pret used to be okay, but I had to have the kids sandwiches last time as they'd sold out of smoked salmon.

Its bloody irritating every time I order a salad in a restaurant to have to check that it isn't full of mayo either.
