Mayonaise - Why is it slathered over everything ???

allmycats · 04/06/2016 12:26

Am I the only person totally pissed off that when ever I order a sandwich etc anywhere it comes totally slathered in masses of mayo even though
there is no mention of it on the menu. I don't like mayo and if I see it on the menu I ask for my food without it. I also ask 'does this have mayo on it'?
So why the hell do they insist on trying to feed it me using excuses such as
'there is only a bit' 'all our sandwiches have mayo on them' If I ask for NO MAYO this is what I want.

Mayo is good for you :)

iseenodust · 04/06/2016 16:40

Hate mayo. OP you should start a campaign for 50% of the sandwich range in all shops to be mayo free.

Florinda2016 · 04/06/2016 16:41

Mayo is just plain wrong. And salad cream is the correct accompaniment for chips.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 04/06/2016 16:45

Agree. I'm not a mayo fan. Slimy horrible stuff.

I think it's on practically every sandwich because it's cheap and easier to apply when mass producing sandwiches than butter or margarine.

(And accusing the OP of being a journalist? Really? For a thread about mayonnaise? Bizarre Confused )

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 04/06/2016 16:45

I'm laughing about someone accusing cats if bring a journalist. Hard hitting topic here.

Also the pop up advert on this page for me is heinz mayonnaise. Everyone knows it has to be hellmans.

ItsyBitsyBikini · 04/06/2016 16:46

Hate Mayo, keep saying to dp that I'm going to come up with a load of supermarket sandwiches that don't have mayo on!

FurryLittleTwerp · 04/06/2016 16:48

I like mayo, but not on everything.

DH dollops it all over chilli, lasagne, pizza - slimy & yuck!

NicknameUsed · 04/06/2016 16:53

"It never occurred to me to order the sandwich with NO mayo as a BLT does not usually have it"

Yes they do. I suspect a lot of sandwiches would be rather dry and unappetising without mayonnaise. Also it binds the filling together. An egg sandwich without mayonnaise would have the filling falling out all over the place.

I also find that there is never enough mayonnaise in sandwiches. It tends to be a stingy smear rather than slathered all over the place.

Pinkheart5915 · 04/06/2016 17:00

I don't really like Mayo but can eat little bits of it.

The local restaurant here puts mayo on every sandwich even the blt I know to ask for it without now. In supermarkets most sandwiches have Mayo in too I think it must be because Mayo is so cheap.

Usernamegone · 04/06/2016 17:25

I hate mayo in sandwiches as well. I much prefer it when the Mayo/dip/dressing is on the side of a meal so you can decide if you want it and how much!

TheNaze73 · 04/06/2016 17:40

YANBU, it's horrible stuff & I can't buy a packaged sarnie in a shop because they'll all smothered in the stuff

Alidoll · 04/06/2016 17:43

I'm another person that totally hates the taste of Mayo. Why can't they add a little satchet to the packaging so you can add if you want to (or chuck in the bucket if it makes you barf🙊)

Literally you end up with chicken (with nothing else on it) or cheese and tomato. Grrrrr

Cliffdiver · 04/06/2016 17:44

Ugh, I hear you!!!

Went to Boots today to get a sandwich, there were about 20 varieties. Every sodding one had mayo in.

Every. Sodding. One.

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 04/06/2016 17:48

I'm allergic to eggs and I have to read labels on sandwiches religiously to make sure mayo doesn't sneak in there. Its a pita.

Kanga59 · 04/06/2016 17:49

mayo on a blt is standard. yabu. This is a non issue

mumofhandsomeboys · 04/06/2016 19:34

Mayo is vile, yet every single sandwich is every single shop is coated in the crap Angrythe only sandwiches I ever buy out are a plain ham or cheese (they rarely use butter tho so it's minging and dry) or a duck wrap. Or sometimes I just use the lack of nice sandwiches to have a coffee and cake lunch! BlushBrewCake xx

Palomb · 04/06/2016 19:41

It's really hard of you don't like mayonnaise. I can't stand the stuff personally and eat a fair few duck and hoisin wraps as they are generally he only thing in a shop without Mayo. A BLT does not need mayo, nor does a cheese sandwiche.

Apparently mayonnaise is adds as a kind of preservative as it disguises slightly old bread and stops things falling to bits.

Kitsandkids · 04/06/2016 19:53

I don't like any sauce in sandwiches. It is surprisingly hard to find prepacked sandwiches without sauce in!

When I hadn't been in the north east long I went out for dinner and ordered a hot beef sandwich. It came with loads of gravy in. I hate gravy. The menu didn't say anything about gravy and in the south they don't tend to put gravy in sandwiches!

NicknameUsed · 04/06/2016 19:56

Don't you find them a bit dry without some kind of filling that is moist Kits?

PrimalLass · 04/06/2016 20:06

I adore mayonnaise. What's not to like?

BLTs pretty much always have Mayo.

PrimalLass · 04/06/2016 20:07

blackheartsgirl · 04/06/2016 20:14

Don't mind a bit of mayo but can't stand big huge slices of tomato in a butty bleaurgh

SabineUndine · 04/06/2016 20:28

They use it instead of butter cos it's cheaper. I like mayo but I get sick of it o absolutely bloody everything.

soundofthenightingale · 04/06/2016 20:31

Luv it.

Cherryminx · 04/06/2016 20:35

I'm fed up with over mayo'd sandwiches but even more annoying is roast beef sandwiches where the person making it thinks that horseradish sauce is just like mayo. It isn't. It is like mustard -- hot and spicy, nice in moderation but not amenable to slathering
