Why is it so fucking slow? Why is there a 10 second delay after I press any button? Why does it not let me pause a catch up programme and come back to it later? Why do I have to start from the beginning? Why are the menus so ugly?

AIBU to want to go back to sky?

I have a non sleeping baby and have quite a short fuse at the moment and find myself shouting at the tv quite a lot.

I remember seeing TiVo on sex and the city and thinking it looked SO cool, now it's randomly recorded "lip sync battle" cos it thinks I might like it and I'm just offended to be honest.

We switched to sky a few months ago after years with virgin and I love sky tv services so much. The broadband is disappointingly slower and more prone to dropping than it was with virgin, but the tv makes up for it. Our plan was to swap baxk to virgin at the end of our 12 month contract (and back to sky again after the end of that contract, repeat ad infinitum) but I honestly now don't think I want to give up sky tv even temporarily!

How do you get the internet without a landline?

Totally delayed response here, sorry! I meant we don't have/use a landline phone, just mobiles. We do and have always had the capacity for it, hence internet ability Smile tech fail there on my part!

Incidentally, that's another reason virgin is rubbish - they only sell 'packages' rather than individual services (TV, Internet etc) so we ended up paying for yonks for a phone service we literally never used.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/06/2016 21:42

We had literally no landline for ages you don't need one with Virgin, eventually they badgered us into getting a landline phone line (free installation and line rental)

Sallyingforth · 04/06/2016 22:43

Thank you Four, I understand now :)
You need a landline to get broadband, whether you have a telephone service or not.
You may be interested to know that there are suggestions of legislation that would force providers to sell broadband without a phone line. But of course they would have to put the broadband charges up to recoup the lost profit. They'll get their money somehow :(

KinkyAfro · 04/06/2016 22:46

Our broadband was brilliant but changing TV channels seemed to take an age, it was only recently though, it used to be instant. Can't decide who to go with when we move Confused

YumBountyChoc · 04/06/2016 22:50

Getting on my nerves at the moment, particularly the TIVO. Why if a show is delayed start does the TIVO start recording anyway and either miss the end of the program I actually want to watch or not record it at all?

Why can I get wifi signal in my downstairs neighbours living room but not my bathroom? first world problem I know

Why is the TIVO box so slow that my 11month old has finished her lunch before I've managed to load a program?

Grr

Shizzy · 04/06/2016 22:52

It is fucking shit. The shittiest of shit. I hate it. But it's worked out £50 per month cheaper for us this year so we switched. Can't wait to go back to Sky.

Brummiegirl15 · 04/06/2016 23:19

I HATE Virgin TV but fully admit the broadband is great.

I miss Sky. We moved and were out of contract with Sky and Virgin was on the new estate. So sick of fairly crap Sky broadband so changed to Virgin and now got shit telly

Groovee · 05/06/2016 08:48

Because your WiFi router is not located or adjusted correctly. It needs to be set up more carefully.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/06/2016 19:08

You don't - not if you are getting your broadband through fibre rather than landline...

Sallyingforth · 05/06/2016 21:25

Landline doesn't define the material, it's still a landline whether made of copper pair, coaxial or fibre.
The only alternative is a microwave radio link, which a few isolated systems use.

SellFridges · 05/06/2016 23:24

I think only Virgin offer the ability to have broadband and/or TV without any kind of landline being connected.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/06/2016 23:59

Apologies - I have always used landline to mean telephone that comes through wire to your house.

To clarify, with Virgin a cable comes to your house to deliver broadband/ television. If in addition you also wish telephone they can additionally provide that, but it is not a requirement.

TolpuddleFarterOATB · 06/06/2016 00:09

I swapped from Sky to Virgin, and Tivo really isn't a patch on Sky+. As soon as our contract is up i'm heading back to sky

happymumof4crazykids · 06/06/2016 00:39

I left virgin as they were shit! Could never watch anything on catch up, movies would never play unless watching live and the broadband kept failing! Went back to sky and I'm so much happier. Will never use virgin again.

notamummy10 · 06/06/2016 00:50

Their internet is the worst!! Angry

bruffin · 06/06/2016 05:53

Those who get bad internet, are you sure it is the internet and not your browser? We had awful problems with chrome hanging on an older version of windows a couple of times,

SoupDragon · 06/06/2016 07:19

Their internet is the worst

From this thread, clearly that is not true for everyone.

Musicaltheatremum · 06/06/2016 07:37

We've hd Virgin for years. Very fast. When we first got it it was a bit slow but I phoned their call centre and they got me to change some settings on my computer and the difference was amazing. Their call centre is really easy to get through to. BT though takes hours

scarednoob · 06/06/2016 07:39

Thanks for reminding me I need to ring and cancel ours today. I tried yesterday, surprise surprise there was a "30 minute wait" before anyone would be free to take the call....

GeorgeTheThird · 06/06/2016 07:46

I have the same issues - good internet but poor/slow/ error-message-prone TiVo. I can't get Sky because the neighbours' trees at the foot of the garden are too tall. Virgin however don't know that so I call them approximately annually and threaten to leave, which keeps my costs low.

For those missing Sky Atlantic - Now tv is the answer. It has other channels too, so you may be able to reduce your Virgin package if you get it.

ratspeaker · 06/06/2016 08:11

I can pause catch up on my V+ box.
Also pause and rewind live programmes.
Its a bit extra for the V+.

The basic box in my sons room doesn't do anything bar provide tv.

We have Now tv also, it works through your broadband and you can install the ap on upto 4 other devices. So my son watches GOT at 2am as its first broadcast through his computer in his room.

nonladyofleisure · 06/06/2016 08:21

Yes it is very delayed... I kicked off and got out my contract early!
