To think schoolchildren should not be turned loose in a rose garden

I was enjoying the peace in my local park and had just got DS to sleep in his pram. A group of around 30 kids started charging around the rose garden, running along the paths screeching and chasing each other Angry The teachers just sat by the fountain and did nothing! Didn't even tell them to keep the noise down and of course DS woke up when a bunch of them jostled past his pram Angry

It was the same at the zoo and Sealife centre recently, groups of noisy shrieking school kids pushing in front of everyone, shoving each other, getting in the way and generally being a nuisance.

AIBU to think kids on school trips should be kept under control, not left to run wild?

🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹I don't suppose the children were there for long, they certainly won't be there every day or even every week. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Should you have serious cause for complaint in the park, sea life centre or zoo have a quiet word with one of their teachers.

A bunch of school children should have played quietly in a park?

Oh dear, OP, you're going to look back on this and cringe in a few years.

branofthemist · 04/06/2016 09:05

The rose gardens are advertised as a quiet area

At no point has the OP said the rose garden is designed as quiet area. Just that she and some older people decided it was and therefore everyone else must comply.

foxybingodotcom · 04/06/2016 09:06

I beg your pardon?

I wonder if you're in Glasgow OP, the west end?

It would piss me off too and I would quietly seethe then move on.

YANBU.

We have a similar set up in one of our local parks and i dont think yabu.

If there is a proper park area the children should have been taken to that. Regardless of signs, its not really appropriatly to take children (30 of them) into a garden of roses.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 04/06/2016 09:25

YANBU

However, people these days seem to think children should be able to do what they want, where they want & screw anyone else.

Rose Gardens are not the place for children to be running around screaming & chasing about.

Play park, field, common - fine. Shout, scream, run around etc

The Zoo & Sea Life - again, of course they shouldn't be running riot barging about, pushing in and making a nuscience of themselves Those places have play areas to run off steam.

...and yes, I have been 'in charge' of large groups of children.

nanetterose · 04/06/2016 09:28

I used to go to a rose garden when my babies were small. It was a more peaceful spot. You don't need to be 'PFB' to assume it will be a more peaceful area. I'm not sure the teacher did pick the best space. Smaller/more contained yes- and l understand that need (TA in reception). I think that if it is a massive park, you could find somewhere else. We take our class out a fair bit - paramount in our minds is making sure the children 'behave' and give a good representation of the school.

melonribena · 04/06/2016 09:48

Honestly, I think the sealife centre etc are completely different from a park.
I would expect them to be quietish and respectful in a sea life centre.
They would still be expected to be respectful of others in a park but still be allowed to play, shout and have fun! They are letting off steam.

Take your baby elsewhere if it's noisy.

Lurkedforever1 · 04/06/2016 09:53

yabu and pfb. The world doesn't have to stop because your pfb is asleep. And it's also very selfish to expect everyone else to spoil their own enjoyment of a public place pandering to your entitled opinions.

ineedaholidaynow · 04/06/2016 09:54

For the people saying it is fine for children to run around noisily in a rose garden if there are no signs saying it is a designated quiet area, if you went there with your DC and everyone else there, young and old, were sitting there quietly enjoying the peace, would you then let your children run around noisily?

I assume it is just a given that a place like that is not a children's play area especially when there is a huge expanse of green area and designated play areas in the same park. In the same way if I wanted quiet solitude I wouldn't sit in the children's play area.

HermioneJeanGranger · 04/06/2016 10:10

YANBU. There are places for kids to run riot and let off steam - playgrounds, parks, large open fields. I've been on school trips which ended up with a visit to the park - and no way were we allowed to run around unless we were in the play area.

The same applied to zoos or farm parks - they have play areas for kids to let of steam and run around screaming - you don't let them run riot on pathways where they're bashing to prams.

Kids can have fun, but that doesn't mean they can do so wherever they want ffs.

bakeoffcake · 04/06/2016 10:14

YANBU.

Yes children can run about loudly in a playground or large park. but NOT in a rose garden.

Children, on a school tour, having fun and playing? Down with that sort of thing!
Hmm

meowli · 04/06/2016 11:19

Says who??

Common sense, mainly.

If one of the children had fallen into a bed of roses and been lacerated by the thorns, everyone would have piled in to say how stupid to let them loose in such an unsuitable environment. There are many areas of the park where a large group of children could run riot - a rose garden isn't the first one to spring to most people's minds except on AIBU.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 04/06/2016 11:24

The teachers didn't discipline them, as they weren't doing anything wrong. They were playing and news flash. Kids play. If noise of the public bothers you don't go to public places.

drivingmisspotty · 04/06/2016 11:26

I agree with you that the rose garden doesn't sound like the best place for 30 running children. Aside from whether it was designated a quiet area, surely when you arrive at an area you have a look round and get a feel.of the ambience. so if there were several people enjoy the peace and quiet it was really rather rude of the leaders to let the children run around. The children weren't doing anything wrong, I don't think, just being normal kids but the venue wasn't the best choice. However, instead of there being 'much tutting' one of you could have spoken to the teachers.

The sea life centre and zoo that you mention, I actually go the other way and wonder how sensitive you are to their noise. I have accompanied my dd's school on quite a few trips, including sea life centre and art gallery. The school is fairly good at discipline and good behaviour was drummed into the kids. But they were excited. And may have got a bit noisy at times or pushed in front (swiftly to be corrected by an adult I hope). On the whole they are very well behaved but they are still little kids. One thing I notice is at the end of the day they always seem to be a bit wild and need a lot more reigning in. The effort of behaving well all day wears them out I think. They are only young and still learning.

meowli · 04/06/2016 11:26

It obviously wasn't the children who were at fault. They were just being children. The teachers were being unreasonable to think that it was a suitable area for their charges to let off steam.

kali110 · 04/06/2016 11:35

I don't think yabu.
The teacher could have found a more appropriate spot for them to play.
I also don't think a sealife center is place where kids should be running around Confused
A zoo i'm on the fence about, i'm fine as long as the kids aren't continuously banging on the glass scaring the animals.
I'd be more concerned at the zoo if they were running around about their safety.

HandWash · 04/06/2016 11:36

YABU OP

But I was ready to commit murder when our neighbours started letting fireworks off on NYE and I'd just got PFB to sleep Angry

You're never unreasonable when it envolves someone waking your sleeping baby Wink
