I know it sounds ridiculous but please bear with me.

About a month ago DH and I talked an Italian skipper into taking us to an abandoned island off the coast of Venice. There are huge legends, myths and stories about this island, tons of documentries and "scariest places of earth" type programs but the island is off limits to anyone and difficult to access unless of course you can talk someone into taking you there.

Island has a history of military stronghold, plague victim hospital, mass plague burial pits when the disease spread out of control and later it was a mental asylum where supposedly a mad doctor carried out experiments on patients and later threw himself off the (now) bricked up clock tower. The island is completely abandoned since the 50s and totally inhabited. When DH and I went, we were literally the only people on the island. The skipper refused to join us saying he'd pick us up in 3 hours and if we were not there, he'd be calling the police!!

Anyway - DH and I ran around this island for 3 hours, explored the old aslum, took loads of photos, visited the supposed burial grounds, DH climbed up the clock tower (well as far up as he could get since the place is falling down!) and I felt absolutely fine - not spooked out at all.

Only thing was that whilst DH was messing up the clock tower, I heard footsteps heading towards the hospital where we were through the overgrown bushes etc outside. I stood and waited for what I assumed to be other tourists and nobody came. When I've researched the island since, footsteps are supposedly one of the first signs of things starting to go wrong. Nothing else happened however.

Anyway we got back on the boat, has pasta and prosecco - felt fine. Got home, showed everyone the photos - felt fine.

4 weeks later I'm dreaming of this island, not nightmares as such but wierdly atmoshpheric dreams that make me feel really, really sad and depressed. I can't explain it. During the day at work my mind keeps switching to the island/hospital and I feel an overwhelming sadness and depression when I think about it.

I'm having wierd dreams that people are standing beside my bed watching me sleep.

I don't believe in ghosts. Well - I'm starting to wonder ...

AIBU to be putting so much energy into this? I'm actually shitting myself that I've done something really terrible.

After all- it says it hasn't been edited so it must be true!

MrsSpecter · 02/06/2016 16:27

piss off non believers

Hmm

If you only want full agreement that your woo theories are spot on then go post somewhere they dont think much known for it. MN isnt your audience.

MintyChapstick · 02/06/2016 16:29

I've wanted to go to Poveglia after seeing it on Ghost Adventures! I'm very jealous OP.

mizuzu · 02/06/2016 16:33

Mrs why dont you go post elsewhere. You dont own MN get over yourself

MadameDePomPom · 02/06/2016 16:36

If you don't learn to play nicely you'll all be sent to Povelgia on an overnighter to sort out your differences!

BertrandRussell · 02/06/2016 16:41

"Mrs why dont you go post elsewhere. You dont own MN get over yourself"

Says the woman who told non believers to piss off! Grin

AugustaFinkNottle · 02/06/2016 16:41

I have rarely seen anything so obviously staged as that YouTube hotel video. It's not even very well acted.

GarlicSteak · 02/06/2016 16:45

First & expat, there's a socking great church right out my back window. It does the full ding-dong quarter hours, 24 hours a day, plus massive campanological exploits for every mass and wedding - some show-off bridezilla paid for a full 60 minutes last weekend. It was loud. Very loud.

I don't hear the time chimes any more, unless I'm half-awake at night.

BUT ... there's also someone who plays sodding nursery rhymes at about 2:30am Shock I imagine this might be when they're training new recruits, but WHY in the middle of the night?? I'll go and ask them one day. If they look all shifty and deny it, I'll report back so MN can start suspecting a very noisy bell-ringing ghost.

MadameDePomPom · 02/06/2016 16:47

The church near us has its bells rung via some electronic jiggery pokery. One weekend there was a gremlin in the system and those damn bells (don't simte me down Jesus) rang and rang and rang.

And rang.

MadameDePomPom · 02/06/2016 16:47

'smite'

mizuzu · 02/06/2016 16:52

Bertrand yeah i said it after being mocked. Lets not try play innocent, its there for everyone to read.

Baileysagain · 02/06/2016 16:52

We are conditioned to follow our natural instincts, you went against it when you went there and are now fretting about it. Did you really hear footsteps or could it have been something else? You were standing there waiting for your OH and probably on edge, the noise could have been animals, the wind, anything. It's all just playing on your imagination, just try not to dwell on it as you are scaring yourself.

GarlicSteak · 02/06/2016 16:52

Oh, no, PomPom! I feel your pain.

mizuzu · 02/06/2016 16:53

Augusta tbh everyone says every ghost video is staged on YT suppose its just what u believe. What did you think of the mist one?

AugustaFinkNottle · 02/06/2016 16:55

Also staged, mizuzu.

Has it occurred to you that every ghost video on YouTube actually is staged? What evidence do you have to the contrary?

BertrandRussell · 02/06/2016 16:57

"Bertrand yeah i said it after being mocked. Lets not try play innocent, its there for everyone to read."

Nope. Not trying to play the innocent. Grin

You don't seriously think those videos are real, do you?

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 02/06/2016 17:04

Those YouTube videos are the funniest things ever! Designed for 13 year olds to squeal over methinks

Grown adults, they are not for you

IfTheCapFitsWearIt · 02/06/2016 17:17

Look I actually do believe in some woo stuff.

But every ghost vid, TV psychic is fake.
Sorry

I didn't watch but read a discription of it. equipment failure, and supposed failed possession. Hmm

They are not going to turn up to a make a TV show and then nothing happen are they?

MrsSpecter · 02/06/2016 17:17

Mrs why dont you go post elsewhere

I dont want to and thats a valid reason 😜

Pipbin · 02/06/2016 17:52

I have rarely seen anything so obviously staged as that YouTube hotel video. It's not even very well acted.

It is so interesting how the room in question is in exactly the right spot for the CCTV cameras? It's a good scary little film, interesting idea. but proof of ghosts it is not.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. However you won't find them on YouTube.

I say that as someone who has seen things that they cannot explain, grew up in house that was meant to be haunted and has subscribed to the Fortean Times for nearly 20 years.

Buggers · 02/06/2016 18:04

What do you mean you dh was messing with the clock?

MintyChapstick · 02/06/2016 18:10

What's this about church bells being rung in the night?! That's as creepy as fuck! Why would they do that? My local church practices every Tuesday evening and you know when it's the newbies as they hit lots of duff notes lol.

But at 2.30am. That's just, weird.

TheCladdagh · 02/06/2016 18:12

It can't be all that difficult to access, because I've been there myself as part of a fairly standard tour, without having to persuade any mysterious skippers to 'abandon' me amidst much tooth-sucking and woo stories. Grin

Honestly, OP, you've just freaked yourself out a bit. Calm down. You are not being pursued by spirit plague victims jealous of your pasta and prosecco. Otherwise every urban exploration enthusiast would be pursued all their lives by a long string of unquiet spirits from abandoned bedlams and prisons.

Awful things have happened everywhere - there are plague pits under shopping centres, and battles that killed hundreds of thousands in fields of peacefully-munching cows - not just in abandoned, spooky, atmospheric places. My niece lives happily in a glossy modern apartment built in a notorious psychiatric hospital that shared a site with a Magdalen laundry. The hundreds of other people who have shelled out serious money to do so appear to sleep peacefully, too.

People like to think that horror registers somehow, but it doesn't. That's the horror.

It's like that much-touted myth of birds not singing on the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp, which is presumably circulated by people who would never normally pay any attention to birds visiting at a time of year when birds are very quiet, anyway, and only noticing because they've been told there's no birdsong at Auschwitz.

expatinscotland · 02/06/2016 18:12

'What's this about church bells being rung in the night?! That's as creepy as fuck! '

It's annoying as fuck, especially if you're a tourist. When it gonged 12 times at midnight, I thought, 'Oh, this will surely be it.' Nope. Bastard clock.

MrsSpecter · 02/06/2016 18:13

buddha that book was called 'the island'.
