I know it sounds ridiculous but please bear with me.

About a month ago DH and I talked an Italian skipper into taking us to an abandoned island off the coast of Venice. There are huge legends, myths and stories about this island, tons of documentries and "scariest places of earth" type programs but the island is off limits to anyone and difficult to access unless of course you can talk someone into taking you there.

Island has a history of military stronghold, plague victim hospital, mass plague burial pits when the disease spread out of control and later it was a mental asylum where supposedly a mad doctor carried out experiments on patients and later threw himself off the (now) bricked up clock tower. The island is completely abandoned since the 50s and totally inhabited. When DH and I went, we were literally the only people on the island. The skipper refused to join us saying he'd pick us up in 3 hours and if we were not there, he'd be calling the police!!

Anyway - DH and I ran around this island for 3 hours, explored the old aslum, took loads of photos, visited the supposed burial grounds, DH climbed up the clock tower (well as far up as he could get since the place is falling down!) and I felt absolutely fine - not spooked out at all.

Only thing was that whilst DH was messing up the clock tower, I heard footsteps heading towards the hospital where we were through the overgrown bushes etc outside. I stood and waited for what I assumed to be other tourists and nobody came. When I've researched the island since, footsteps are supposedly one of the first signs of things starting to go wrong. Nothing else happened however.

Anyway we got back on the boat, has pasta and prosecco - felt fine. Got home, showed everyone the photos - felt fine.

4 weeks later I'm dreaming of this island, not nightmares as such but wierdly atmoshpheric dreams that make me feel really, really sad and depressed. I can't explain it. During the day at work my mind keeps switching to the island/hospital and I feel an overwhelming sadness and depression when I think about it.

I'm having wierd dreams that people are standing beside my bed watching me sleep.

I don't believe in ghosts. Well - I'm starting to wonder ...

AIBU to be putting so much energy into this? I'm actually shitting myself that I've done something really terrible.

We've had ghosts, get some sage sticks off amazon and cleanse the house, you can also create a protective bubble of light around you and the house.

Sit down as if you were meditating and imagine a bubble of bright white light surrounding you, then push that light out into the room, imagine it filling all the rooms all the space in your house until it's completely surrounded.

Although a word of warning when I did the light bubble I actually felt/saw one of the ghosts in my mind a dark shape of a man in the kitchen scared the sit out of me!

Fortunately my friend sees dead people and came round to see who/what it was, it was my grampa stood by the drinks cabinet in the kitchen - he loved a good g&t.

Op , you will get the usual posters giving you a good ticking off for daring to believe the unbelievable. Grin

It could be that you have just been spooked. Wait and see what happens and I guess you might need to contact someone if it carries on. Who that is I have no idea?

AugustaFinkNottle · 02/06/2016 11:54

I don't think it is off-limits. From Trip Advisor:

"It is easy to visit the island for the experience of going there and photographing it. A company called City Tours can take you around the island, you can email and arrange a visit. It takes about 10 minutes to get there from San Marco Square."

AdrenalineFudge · 02/06/2016 11:54

ledkr An exorcist has been advertising in my local newspaper. I don't mind tearing his number of and giving it to the OP Grin.

I've just read an account of someone who spent a night in the abandoned asylum! Shock

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 02/06/2016 11:57

Op that sounds like a film I saw .... Can't remember much but had Leonardo de caprio in it!

squoosh · 02/06/2016 11:57

Shutter Island!

kumamon · 02/06/2016 11:58

Get some sage sticks off Amazon has tickled me.

ISpeakJive · 02/06/2016 11:58

OP, I've only read your post but none of the replies. To be honest I'm not sure if I believe or don't believe. I'm kind of on the fence with the whole ghost/spooks/spirits thing. Have you ever seen Ghost Adventures? They visited the island...Might be worth a watch.

BertrandRussell · 02/06/2016 12:00

You can book a guided tour of Poveglia! I forget the name of the company but there's a board up in Piazza San Marco..........

BertrandRussell · 02/06/2016 12:02

And it was only off limits when it was an isolation hospital - for obvious reasons. It isn't now.

acasualobserver · 02/06/2016 12:07

the island is off limits to anyone and difficult to access

So this bit, at least, is not actually true?

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 02/06/2016 12:10

Yes squoosh!!!

Op.... Urban exploration is a hobby of mine!! Well done on your 'splore'

JoffreyBaratheon · 02/06/2016 12:17

I wanted to be a sceptic - am wired that way. Then had the inconvenience of seeing a full apparition (along with someone else) that cured me of that comforting fiction!

So anything is possible.

But in this case I think you're likely to be just bringing to the surface things that were probably already swimming around in the subconscious mind, anyway and the island is just a sort of motif, in your mind, to attach it all to.

I once had a series of very unsettling dreams and one day basically just said "Feck off now, I've had enough. Don't want these dreams ever again!" and never had them again. It's probably just unresolved stuff taking the form of this place and a vague unease you had there - your underlying insecurities coming to the fore. Now they're in your conscious mind, it will probably dissipate.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 02/06/2016 12:17

Thanks op Hmm

I'm now spending time researching it and looking on google maps! That's the day gone then

Apparently fishermen avoid going near in case they get human bones in their nets! I guess it's a whole load of trouble with paperwork etc involved

Some pics look really unsafe. Nature is slowly reclaiming the place as it decays into the undergrowth.

AlpacaPicnic · 02/06/2016 12:17

Could you be feeling a bit of residual guilt for doing something 'naughty' ?

Fuzzy knows the score.
I've felt unsafe in the past for reasons I won't expand on here ( because anything woo gets completely slated) and the white light mediation is the way to go.

ohtheholidays · 02/06/2016 12:27

I know people will not agree with me but I don't care you shouldn't have gone there OP.Have some respect, you said awful things are supposed to have happened there and people are supposed to be buried there!

I hate the shows on tv where they go meddling in places they think are haunted,it's never in the interest of helping anyone cross over it's all about trying to find something/someone,trying to wind them up if they think they have and ratings.Disgusting behaviour!

I'm a Christian and I'm also a Gypsy we've always been rasied to respect the dead and to never mess about with something you can't control!

Like another poster said it could be guilt your experiencing and if that is all it is then you've got nothing to worry about.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 02/06/2016 12:34

Oo, can i see the photos? I love old and abandoned places!

slinkysaluki · 02/06/2016 12:41

Been watching a programme about Venice presented by Francesco da Mosto. This was on this week's episode, he visited the island and said the plague victims were buried in shallow graves, he actually picked up some bones that were on the shore. It was a very errie place. Some people are more susceptible to picking up feelings than others, my mum's family are Romany and she is very sensitive in this way.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 02/06/2016 12:42

On a serious note, has you got a carbon monoxide detector?
