To think that Classics should be renamed Shittics?

.....or Trollics?

I used to love a trawl through whilst waiting for an appointment or on a train etc.

Now they're all 900 posts of placemarking, trolls who think they're funny, or someone wondering why a squirrel is sitting in a tree before finally scaring it off with a hose.

I mean come ON.

OP posts:

The squirrel one really annoyed me, it was so try-hard - the OP was going for an Elderly Korean Lady-type quirkiness that just didn't come off at all cos the premise was so ridiculous.

I did cry laughing at the recent Dwarf Con thread - did that make it into Classics?

MadHattersWineParty · 02/06/2016 09:32

Cel yes it did, then got pulled IIRC.

firesidechat · 02/06/2016 09:35

The dwarf one was a troll I think. Saying that, I'm sure that there are lots of troll threads in classics already.

NameChangeMum456 · 02/06/2016 09:39

I think that different people will find different things amusing, and there is no one standard of humour that we can hold all Classics up to. Disparaging one person's humour over your own is a little bit elitist. You can say I don't find this amusing, without saying it's not funny at all. Different strokes for different folks?

firesidechat · 02/06/2016 09:43

I would be happy if someone could explain to me why it was worthy of a place in classics though. Funny or not, and I think only some of the responses made it funny and not the op, it was so contrived it was embarrassing.

When I saw MN had started the lego thread I left the page straight away because I assumed it was a promotional thing and they're looking for something intentionally to hand over to the press. Might be wrong but that's how it came across.

I have a proposal for deciding if something should be a classic: a set amount of time (6 months, a year perhaps) and if people are still referencing it, then it can be put it classics. I joined MN last year and saw the Pombear thread referenced a couple of times and so looked it up and it was indeed funny and deserving of classic status. A lot of them that get put in might remain an in joke for a couple of weeks but will soon be forgotten. So if they stay in the collective MN memory, then and only then do they become classic.
What do you reckon?

BalloonSlayer · 02/06/2016 09:57

The idea of classics was to save threads on chat from being lost, I thought, as they disappear forever after 90 days. So all the AIBU ones on there are a bit pointless, I reckon.

Awww Got excited cos I thought you were going to talk about Latin and Greek

SideOrderofChip · 02/06/2016 12:39

I did like the Elderly Korean Lady....

and EM always makes me shed a tear

NeedACleverNN · 02/06/2016 12:41

EM made me cry too

And the terrible twist at the end... She will always be remembered

cozietoesie · 02/06/2016 12:45

I read the EM thread last night. For the first time, all the way through.

What a person.

KatieKaboom · 02/06/2016 12:56

Grass, me too. Grin Tangent time?

Latin is my favourite, but Horace and his tedious waffling about chickpeas can go to the crows. How can that boring shite be called satire?

HowBadIsThisPlease · 02/06/2016 23:29

Sorry but what is EM?

notamummy10 · 02/06/2016 23:48

There are a few threads on there that make me giggle but some leave me wondering why the hell are they on there!

notamummy10 · 02/06/2016 23:49

HowBad EM - Earth Mother, she fostered a drug dependent baby for around 8/9 months. Unfortunately she passed away from cancer:(

GrassW1dow · 03/06/2016 15:05

Greek is my bag Katie. tragedy every time, and some comedy but am less au fait with that
