One that irritates me is "chomping" at the bit, when it should be "champing"
I saw "walla" for the first time yesterday, on a review on the Boots website. Confused

CocktailQueen · 30/05/2016 21:41

Acorn antics - no! Think, not thing. See the Oxford dictionaries link.
(Also absence, not abscence.)

Heidi42 · 30/05/2016 21:42

Oh and what about my fave
Pacific instead of specific ?

HalsallRedux · 30/05/2016 21:42

Sigh.

It's 'another THINK coming'.

We've been through all this.

iklboo · 30/05/2016 21:43

I've seen 'without further adieu'. Former boss thought it meant 'the last word - no more goodbyes'.

GeezAJammyPeece · 30/05/2016 21:44

Chester draws Grin 😂😂

'S
Pacific/Specific (TheTeens had a GEOGRAPHY teacher who continually got that wrong ShockHmmConfused

I work with a woman who frequently get words mixed up or confused; I'm often torn between admiration that she pretty much taught herself to read in her late teens/early twenties and has always struggled with dyslexia type issues; and just wanting to shake her, screaming "NOOOO! It's xxxxx" Last week she painted Mongolia in her kitchen, for a moment I really thought she had attempted some sort of landscape mural, before realizing she meant Magnolia

DS is our resident grammar police and loves seeking out these sort of errors.
He loves bacon rasher type crisps but was horrified to note one brand using Bacon Tasty's instead of Tasties. Last time we bought them I noticed it had been rectified.

I noticed Tomatoe's and Potatoe's on a menu recently Shock

And finally, my greatest bug bear has to be StationAry ugghh! Makes me irrationally fuming!! Especially when the offender is a bloody stationer Angry #EforEnvelope Grin

'Trick or treacle' Grin

Chester drawers is the funniest ever though.

Another think...

TheWitchesofIzalith · 30/05/2016 21:53

Yes, it's 'another think coming'. It has never been 'thing'.
I cannot stand 'would of/should of/could of'. So many people get this wrong, it's 'have' not 'of'. Would have, could have, should have.

thecatfromjapan · 30/05/2016 21:54

I think JustineMumsnet's joke about AIBU is that, if it were by men, it would be: 'Why you're being unreasonable.'

TheWitchesofIzalith · 30/05/2016 21:55

Burgle-ry.
Argh!!!

thecatfromjapan · 30/05/2016 21:55

Oops. Wrong thread!

You can try and work out which thread it should have been posted on! Grin

absolutelynotfabulous · 30/05/2016 22:02

Another one for you lovely pedants out there.

That song "Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream...."

Now I keep hearing "Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrrily..arggh!

It's not merrily..it's VERILY.

It IS verily, isn't it? Someone please tell me I'm right??

BillBrysonsBeard · 30/05/2016 22:10

I don't really mind most mistakes and just gloss over them, but the loose/lose one makes me feel all funny. It's everywhere on here!

5Foot5 · 30/05/2016 22:15

Oh the woman painting Mongolia in her kitchen gave me a great belly laugh. Thank you.

And it is think.

I have often heard people of my parents generation use the full phrase. If you think x you have another think coming

KinkyAfro · 30/05/2016 22:16

Were/where
Our/are
Lose/loose
Borrow/lend

IveAlreadyPaid · 30/05/2016 22:16

I have always thought it is merrily...

OTheHugeManatee · 30/05/2016 22:16

Reign in drives me nuts. It's an equestrian metaphor ffs.

OTheHugeManatee · 30/05/2016 22:17

See also 'free reign'

absolutelynotfabulous · 30/05/2016 22:18

Yes, loose and lose is common.

Another thing I've noticed is missing out the apostrophe when it should be there ie: dd school for dd's school.

Is it because people cba to put the apostrophe in? Confused.

reallybadidea · 30/05/2016 22:18

Verily?! Never heard that before!

reallybadidea · 30/05/2016 22:21

I know that it's a matter of stylistic preference, but I loathe s' instead of s's e.g. Chris' instead of Chris's. It just doesn't make any sense without the extra 's'.

FlowersAndShit · 30/05/2016 22:25

I still think Chester Draws is the best Grin
