DS (4) loves dressing up for parties. I love making his costumes. We spend time thinking what we could use, designing it and building it together. So far we have done a batman, a ghost, a mouse and a chick.
He has a queen and kings party soon and wants to be a dragon. Big challenge but I really want to do it (or at least try!)
DH went shopping with MIL and has just called me saying they found a dragon costume in the shop. MIL wants to buy it and they asked if it was ok. I said yes as I do not want to be difficult, but I am upset.
AIBU to not want an already made one? Of course it will look better than what I could make...but it will be half the fun Sad

You said he wants to be a dragon. That's not a dragon costume, so your DS might reject it out of hand. Job done. But if he's happy to wear it you could do as someone else suggested and make a dragon accessory cardboard box painted green with straps attached to 'ride' around on. Two birds killed.

Ah sorry I see he does like it.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this but the clothes that are most admired, (by the other children) are the commercial ones, not something mum, and dad, have slaved over for hours. Those win the prizes though.

Your the mum my kids wished they had ...... My son was always Harry Potter. I could draw an awesome scar though with eye liner Grin

Glad he likes it. It's good they phoned and asked and next time say "no I love discussing costumes and making them with him."
You may be lucky/unlucky and have a son like mine who is still wanting costumes for Cosplay age 19 and only hand made ones count. He makes a lot of it himself but I'm worry he'll wreck the tension on my machine unsupervised so do or supervise machine bits. It's quite nice really as otherwise I'm not seeing that much of him these days.

Yabu for saying yes when they asked then feeling blue about it after.

And when your ds is in school you should start an advisory thread on mn, OP Grin. I'd be really interested how to make stuff at really no notice.

IamAporcupine · 30/05/2016 19:27

haha will try to do so paxillin. I've already had a short notice one - an easter bonnet. I had to improvise with a wedding hat + those chick/eggs like these:
I sew them on so that DS could pull a string and the chicks will squeak Grin

It was definitely different, and maybe not what other children admire globlinlittleowl, but my son was well chuffed Smile
