"Would you like me to email your receipt madam?"

No!
Why would I?
I'll take it now thank you!

More and more shops seem to be asking this and I fear I'm turning into a grumpy old lady.

I'd do it for anything electrical/ furniture etc. It's worth spam to have an electronic receipt for valuable items.

abbsismyhero · 28/05/2016 16:50

in argos you get both the one on the day and one emailed to you it helps sort of because when things go wrong you have a copy of your receipt handy i always lose mine

akkakk · 28/05/2016 16:52

It is technically illegal to then market to you based on asking for an email address for a receipt: ico.org.uk/for-organisations/marketing/

Organisations have to get your permission before marketing to you unless all three of these conditions are met:

  • where you've obtained a person's details in the course of a sale or negotiations for a sale of a product or service;
  • where the messages are only marketing similar products or services; and
  • where the person is given a simple opportunity to refuse marketing when their details are collected, and if they don't opt out at this point, are given a simple way to do so in future messages.
this is known as a soft opt-in

the first two can no doubt be met in these situations, but unless you are given a choice to opt out of marketing when they collect your email address, then the third is not met, so no marketing should take place

the reason that companies carry on with marketing illegally is because people don't complain - if they market to you without your permission, complain to the ICO

abbs unless like me, you pay for items using the self-service card machines... They don't offer that option unfortunately. It's my lesson learnt though, don't buy expensive earphones from anywhere else but Apple or KRCS (the authorised Apple Reseller).

TwistyBraStrap · 28/05/2016 16:54

I like it. I bought a new car battery with a 3 year warranty, they emailed me the receipt and now I won't lose it!

SuburbanRhonda · 28/05/2016 16:55

I just keep my receipts all together in safe place as it's what I've always done Hmm

Pinkheart5915 · 28/05/2016 16:59

If It is something cheap then I'm not bothered about the recicept but when I brought my new laptop last week for £££ I had it emailed to me I think it's a good idea

Baaaaaaaaaaaa · 28/05/2016 17:01

Let's just hope you all remember to back up your data, or not lose/break your device!

The good news is, at least you were offered a receipt. I was in Marksies the other day and was asked if I wanted a receipt. I just couldn't understand why you'd put a load of shopping into your own bag and walk out of the shop without any proof of purchase. It all goes well until someone taps you on the shoulder with a "have you paid for that item madam." Hmm yes, but I have no receipt/proof. Oops.

I just came on MN to post the same thing!

My email is web based. Nothing gets lots if a device is broken or stolen.

Oysterbabe · 28/05/2016 17:06

I would love to see this become the normal for all shops. It would see an end to DH's receipt drawer. I swear he has a receipt for a twix he bought in the 90s. And don't even get me started on the stored packaging in case we need to return things. I hate having to keep shitty little bits of paper or clutter generally. I could have such an awesome clear out

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2016 17:06

Yes. my email isn't going anywhere i can access it from everywhere. Confused

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/05/2016 17:37

IMO they just want your email address so they can bombard you.

I was asked for my email address when buying one small item in Mothercare today. I just said no, politely enough, but it does irritate me when shops ask.
Local Asda went through a phase of asking for your postcode at the checkout. Presumably so they could pigeonhole customers for marketing purposes. I always declined on principle. None of their business.

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2016 17:38

I haven't been bombarded by emails from the shops i have given my email address to send the receipt to. Confused

AnnieOnnieMouse · 28/05/2016 17:40

John Lewis!
DH's tablet developed a fault the other day, 22 months into a 24 month warranty.
Receipt found in minutes!
I have several email addresses, too, one for signing up to stuff, one for emails I want to get, the other for family.

NotYoda · 28/05/2016 17:41

Sparkling

In the past I have been bombarded with emails from other companies, so I wonder whether they've sold the data on.

I always tick/untick the boxes when I've ordered stuff online, so I do wonder whether they have come from this practice of shops taking your email address. They don't give you the chance to decline marketing, do they?

Twistedheartache · 28/05/2016 17:42

I get somebody else's motherboard receipts - from the Stoke branch. I live in the south East

Twistedheartache · 28/05/2016 17:43

*mothercare ffs autocorrect

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2016 17:43

i don't know then. I don't get any marketing emails despite giving out my email address to shops so I don't think that's what the receipt thing is about. More cost saving i would have thought.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 28/05/2016 17:48

The posh knicker shop where I occasionally buy underwear from does this as does Schuh. I'd be happy for more shops to do this. Definitely would be useful for expensive electrical and computer related items - save the receipt to Google Drive or One Drive and it's there when you need it.

GooodMythicalMorning · 28/05/2016 17:48

I currently but not for long work in a company who do this. It annoys the staff as much as the customers. Plus we get reprimanded if we dont get enough e-receipts per day. Its rubbish.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 28/05/2016 17:50

They can't send you marketing emails if they ask for it for a receipt, unless you opt in.

They definitely can't sell it on! There are big fines for reporting that if it's happened.

exLtEveDallas · 28/05/2016 18:00

I opened a hotmail account called [my 4 initials]receipts@ hot mail . com and get shops to send them there. I never open the account unless I want to check a receipt for some reason. I've definitely had marketing stuff sent there though, so I'm glad I didn't give them my 'real' address.

exLtEveDallas · 28/05/2016 18:03

Actually just checked. Not proper marketing as such but an email from the company with 'special offers, click this link' and another one that tells me when the company is having a sale.

Hulababy · 28/05/2016 18:06

I prefer it too. Means it doesn't get lost and if I did need to return something or use it as a guarantee I have it kept more securely and easily accessible.
