AIBU re: sandwiches

My friend is turning 30 soon and one of her work colleagues, let's call her Lucy, but I don't really know her, has organised an afternoon tea for a group of us to celebrate.

For a bit of background, Lucy took our money for the Afternoon Tea upfront (fine by me) and booked an offer using some kind of voucher for a fancy place. It does state clearly on the voucher that it is a 'set' afternoon tea and dietary requirements or requests cannot be catered for.

However, Lucy will only eat plain cheese sandwiches. Cheddar sandwiches. Not cream cheese, or Feta which are both on the menu, just cheddar. Cheddar is mentioned nowhere on the menu. The venue has said it is set menu and alterations cannot be made under any circumstances as its terms and conditions and advised at time of booking. I think maybe they are being awkward. Lucy is very cross about this and the way she feels she has been treated over the cheese sandwiches so now wants to cancel the whole event, which is not her celebration anyway.

AIBU to think that as a grown woman you should just eat the bits you like fill up on scones and champagne and get over yourself?!

Sorry for the rant, I can't deal with the melodramatics over cheesesandwichgate as it is now know.

Why doesn't she just take the cheese out and eat bread and butter? She's making herself look (e)dam silly.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/05/2016 08:19

Then why the hell did she book this place

probably because who in their right mind would think a cheese sandwich would be an actual problem.

but I agree that there will be plenty of scones and cake and she's throwing her toys out the pram.

but I'd not use a venue again that can't cope with such simple requests.

ItsBritneyBitchhh · 28/05/2016 08:37

The replies on this are absolutely amazing Smile

Anyone else curious about these 'feta cheese sandwiches' ?

I hope they are nicer than they sound. Lucy is a knob.

The place doesn't sound very good, due to lack of flexibility and also feta in a sandwich, which is odd.

However, this sort of pickiness is gauche and tedious. As I've just said on the other thread about pickiness, being flexible, adaptable and easy company are important qualities which smooth your path through life and mean people are more likely to want to spend time with you. Being so rigid about what you will and won't eat, and more importantly trying to impose your limitations on plans with others, is quite the opposite.

ShelaghTurner · 28/05/2016 09:29

Ignoring the nonsense for a moment Wink if she booked using a voucher (I assume it's groupon or something) then it's a totally different experience to pitching up and paying full price. They are very rigid and I wouldn't bother asking them to change anything the way you would normally.

But she sounds like a big kid and should just eat more cake instead.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/05/2016 09:54

Who the hell makes feta cheeses sandwiches anyway.

it's far to salty and strong to eat in a sandwich. ..

crazy...

don't blame anyone fir asking fir cheddar instead

GinSolvesEverything · 28/05/2016 11:34

Nooooo feta and avocado in a sandwich is heaven.

Only1scoop · 28/05/2016 11:55

I've been to these tea type things. They aren't necessarily sarnies anyway.... A wrap with feta maybe In minuscule pieces....little ciabatta toasts with different fillings.

If Lucy lump it is after a door stopper deep wedged cheddar plough persons in White crusty. It's probably the wrong gaff.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/05/2016 16:24

Feta sandwiches?Confused where is this place?

ItsBritneyBitchhh · 28/05/2016 16:46

I think it's feta with avocado and something else, but can't remember what! I agree it does sound a bit peculiar but I wouldn't kick up a fuss over it.

anyone else now have this image of a bunch of people sat around a plate full of longing sandwiches all afraid to speak up at just how revolting the whole thing is

Grin
Gileswithachainsaw · 28/05/2016 17:06

longing?

should day minging

Playduh · 28/05/2016 17:18

Lucy is being a bit silly. It would be a shame if she decided she couldn't Comte.

Pinkheart5915 · 28/05/2016 17:23

A grown woman should be able to eat one of the sandwiches on offer but if they really can't stop being so fussy for 1 after noon then obviously they just eat scones with jam cream and mini cakes until full while enjoying the champagne

BagelGoesWalking · 28/05/2016 17:26

Great thread Grin

You have to update as to what eventually happens!

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/05/2016 17:28

is she really cancelling over a sandwich or is there more to it?

I've already said I'd have concerns about why a simple swap was impossible with regards to freshness or teh fact that they are bought on. pre made or frozen from 3663 do they do external catering? I'd be wondering if they flog all the unpopular sandwiches h that aren't sold or eaten during the events as part of these deals....

ItsBritneyBitchhh · 28/05/2016 17:28

It's in the next few weeks. Don't worry I'll let you all know what happens.

Unless, of course, Lucy cancels the event.

OP posts:
Gileswithachainsaw · 28/05/2016 17:29

in which case I'd nit want to hand my money iver to people who can't even make a sandwich so yeah thinking about it I'd consider cancelling.

a feral I cab go to tesco ajd buy cake and scones. something like that that's meant to be a treat I'd want home made

SquinkiesRule · 28/05/2016 17:43

She likes Cheddar best, who are we to dis a brie.
Silly woman, tell her to pack a little cheese sarnie in her bag.

LunaLoveg00d · 28/05/2016 17:49

they should be happy to accommodate her and her simple cheese sandwiches.

I agree - to a point. When you book one of those Groupon/Livingsocial type deals, they are crystal clear about what you are getting. Often the restaurants have a special menu for people with coupons and no changes are allowed. If everyone was like "Lucy", you'd be getting one saying could she have cheddar, the next asking for ham, the next asking for soya spread and not butter, the next whining that the scones have sultanas etc etc etc.

Lucy should stop being a diva over this and certainly shouldn't cancel. If she feels that strongly, ask the cafe to make her an extra cheddar sandwich, which she will pay full whack for.

LunaLoveg00d · 28/05/2016 17:50

How do you hide a horse in dairy products?

Mascarpone.

Floggingmolly · 28/05/2016 17:52

Lucy is the one wh organised it? Confused. Is she a bit thick? Why on earth don't you let her cancel it and just do something else without her rather than let her prolong this circus??

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/05/2016 17:54

If everyone was like "Lucy", you'd be getting one saying could she have cheddar, the next asking for ham, the next asking for soya spread and not butter, the next whining that the scones have sultanas etc etc etc

thing is in a catering establishment that deals with all these requirements usually anyway then all these things should surely be on the premesis.

now I can understand in the event of people wishing to switch to fancy sliced meats or smoked salmon etc where there could be a big price difference.

swapping a sarnie or two to non dairy spread or putting a mixture of scones on, or swapping a feta sandwich fir a cheddar one, really should be possible.

one would assume after all that feta and avacado would be made freshly to avoid bread going soggy and the avacado going brown....Hmm
