Sodding pongy sanitary products!

Just got my period back 10 months post partum. Found a pack of Always ultra from ages ago. Jackpot!

WHERE do Always get their reeking scent from?! Genuine question. This packet has sat in a cupboard for well over a year and I feel quite nauseous with the overwhelming stench of scent when I change my pads.

And who decides that a menstruating woman would love to smell like ancient air-freshener?!

I checked the packet and absolutely nowhere does it state that these abominations are scented.

Anyone up for organising a boycott?

That gets me to all tiny pants about 2imch wide and all towels are like 3!

HoldTheDoorHodor · 26/05/2016 20:04

Void what do the Tesco ones look like. I need more sanitary products and hate always for the same reasons everyone else here does. I'll look for them when I shop on Saturday.

LauraMipsum · 26/05/2016 20:32

I had the same issue when my periods restarted after DD arrived, OP. I don't know whether childbirth makes our bits more sensitive but I was getting thrush every month (TMI sorry Blush)

I switched to cloth and the issue vanished. My favourite ones are from Honour Your Flow who very conveniently popped up on the last thread like this and offered a 10% Mumsnet discount www.honouryourflow.co.uk

I've had some from two other sellers and HYF are my favourite. They're all lovely and soft.

LauraMipsum · 26/05/2016 20:33

MarthaCliff which is the safe bog roll?

Tummyclutter · 26/05/2016 20:36

LauraMipsum
Never knew you could get such things.
how wide are they?

findingmyfeet12 · 26/05/2016 20:41

I read a thread in this subject a few weeks ago and thought that the posters who were complaining were being overly dramatic.

I was very wrong. I had a miscarriage last month and armed myself with a selection of night time pads. I didn't even register that they might be scented as I usually buy a cheaper supermarket brand.

By the time I miscarried (overnight) it was too late to go out and buy more and the smell of the "perfume" was overwhelming. It ended up causing some sort of reaction and I was sore for days afterwards.

I'll stick to the cheaper ones in future.

Arkwright · 26/05/2016 20:43

I complained and got the same reply. I have a stockpile of about 6 packs but once they are gone I am switching to Bodyform. Hopefully Always might see sense and remove the stink if everyone boycotts them.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/05/2016 20:43

I've swapped to body form due to the 'scent' much cheaper and I prefer them.

Botchit · 26/05/2016 20:47

I really like Always. I use the winged night time towels and they are the best I have tried. The smell doesn't bother me at all although if I had a choice I would probably choose non scented, simply because I tend to avoid perfumed products.

LauraMipsum · 26/05/2016 20:48

Tummy if you buy from HYF you can select the size according to your dress size and heaviness of flow, so the width varies.

Libitina · 26/05/2016 20:49

I can't use tampons so imagine a moon cup would be similar. For some reason they make me feel really anxious confused. I get breathless and start panicking so have to take them out... Tis weird.

Maybe it's like me with earplugs. I feel like I'm suffocating when I wear them. Maybe your fanjo needs to breathe? Grin

ThoseWhoDance · 26/05/2016 20:50

Having done cloth nappies and gotten used to sticking my hands down the loo (!), moving on to reusable sanitary products seemed a small and obvious step. I have now used them for nearly ten years and have never looked back and am at present, gradually introducing my 14 year old DD to them. So much more comfortable (and much less leakage) - not to mention better for the environment - and over the longer term, much cheaper as they last and last. Every so often, due to circumstances, I find myself having to use disposables for a few days and am always reminded how much I prefer these!
For anyone interested, www.honouryourflow.co.uk is a good place to start. They do excellent cotton velour (as comfortable as it sounds!) and bamboo pads in a wide range of sizes and 'strengths' , as well as reusable, cotton fabric tampons (no more cystitis!).

ThoseWhoDance · 26/05/2016 20:57

Ah, just seen someone else has already mentioned HYF. Also, new to posting and rereading what I just wrote, looks like an essay😁. Guess I'll get the hang of it in time!

ReturnOfTheJewel · 26/05/2016 20:58

💐 findingmyfeet - I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

My periods still haven't restarted but I've been a huge fan of my meluna cup over the last 3 years - anyone used them from the off when your periods restarted? Do they stay in place as well as they did before? I would imagine things are still a little less tight down there than they once were Blush

ThoseWhoDance · 26/05/2016 21:00

Ps. Moon cups are good, but can feel a little like a do-it-yourself hysterectomy if you're not careful when removing them😜 but not that different from using a diaphragm.

NotSayingImBatman · 26/05/2016 21:01

I like them. I don't like the smell of dead blood that's sat at body temperature for a couple of hours and they cover it up nicely.

I do feel as though I read this thread roughly as often as I get my period. They've been scented for a couple of years now, surely everyone is over the shock?

ThoseWhoDance · 26/05/2016 21:05

ReturnOfTheJewel, they do still stay in place, though I did switch to a larger one.

Pipbin · 26/05/2016 21:13

The interesting thing as well about using cloth is that you find it doesn't smell.

FankEweVeryMuch · 26/05/2016 21:14

I know when people IRL have their periods now from the scent Envy

CrowyMcCrowFace · 26/05/2016 21:16

What's wrong with a nicely folded flannel?

Serious question.

I use cheap tampons when at work or out & a pound shop flannel in my pants for evening & weekend.

Quick rinse, in the wash with the rest of the bedding & towels.

I'm really taken aback that anyone still uses bought towels! I had to recently as I live abroad, was travelling & local pharmacy had no tampons. So I bought always. They were ok, if a bit scenty & smelly, but didn't do anything a bit of towelling wouldn't do...

SoupDragon · 26/05/2016 21:24

surely everyone is over the shock?

They are far worse now and it is very very difficult to find unscientific ones. Especially as the packs often don't mention it.

In the many many years that I have had periods, the only time I've been able to to smell another woman is menstuating is because of the stink of her scented pad.

dementedma · 26/05/2016 21:32

I looked at reusable but the name "honour your flow" put me off for a start!

Botchit · 26/05/2016 21:35

You will be pleased to know your BOYCOTT HAS WORKED (before it even started). Just checked my new packet of Always Ultra night and they have NO SCENT. Has a small bright pink box on the front of the packet saying 'new design'.

Botchit · 26/05/2016 21:38

Wait, sorry. Just check the back of packet and it does say contains a light scent. So light that I can't smell it. I think they have toned it down massively though, as the usual fragrance has disappeared.

Chinks123 · 26/05/2016 21:40

Beat me to it Botchit yes I have the blue always night one and they are unscented! Grin I stopped using them when they were scented, they made me so itchy Blush and I could smell it all day and on my jeans and everything. I could also tell when fellow women were on from the smell too it was so strong.

The principle of covering the 'period smell' is good but it just doesn't work. And changing pads regularly stops any smell anyway. I hope..
