My dsis has informed me that I would be mad to book a Haven holiday in the UK since it will be full of rough people and chavs.

I have never been so I have no idea of the type of clientele.

I'm honest enough to admit that the thought of being surrounded by Jezza Kyle types is a little daunting.

There'll be dh and I along with our 3 dc and I just don't want to fork out a lot of money and feel uncomfortable and unable to use the facilities.

I hate judging people based on how they look/sound etc but she's been before and has really worried me!

I am working-class, but I am no Chav!

2rebecca · 24/05/2016 00:01

I have some chavvy tendencies (not violent sweary ones though) but am middle class

Babyroobs · 24/05/2016 00:16

Oops just booked to go to Perran Sands July 2017. Dh is cross as that's the second holiday I've booked in a week !!

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 24/05/2016 00:21

We've been to 10 or 11 different haven parks - been going since I was 4, once or twice a year, I'm now 21. We've always loved it, DP and I now take DD. Best memories of my childhood at haven sites!

Devon Cliffs, Hafan Y Mor and Thorpe Park are the best ones to go to.

MyCatWasRightAboutYou · 24/05/2016 00:43

Chav is such a shitty, classist term. Hmm You can't judge people by where they go on holiday.

BadLad · 24/05/2016 01:13

Chavs and scum buckets must be doing all right for themselves if they all holiday at Haven. Isn't exactly cheap.

There's a lot of cash to be made in flogging half-inched, jail-broken i-phones.Wink

Vickyyyy · 24/05/2016 01:15

We went to the Haggerston Castle one and tbh, I noticed no 'chavs' Was mainly old couples who I think owned caravans for weekends away and such..and young families. I quite enjoyed it really..a bit shabby in places but you get what you pay for. The kids adored it.

SaucyJack · 24/05/2016 06:24

I am working-class and scummy, but not a chav.

I don't particularly like the general public- but if I absolutely had to go to one of those holiday village places I'd do Butlins over Center Parcs because at least at Butlins you can have a can of Strongbow for breakfast without anybody caring.

RatOnnaStick · 24/05/2016 06:31

I remember going to one on the Isle of Wight in 1995. It was fucking terrible, the lodge thing was dripping with condensation and the beds were hard and lumpy with horrible scratchy blankets. There was some sort of kids talent competition finals going on there so a lot of sticky children in sequins. We went out every day instead and stayed out til bedtime.

That was 21 years ago though, it must have changed since then?

FarrowandBallAche · 24/05/2016 06:46

I wouldn't go to one put it that way.

wannabestressfree · 24/05/2016 07:04

It all.depends where you go...I am as wc as they come but I do judge shouty 'eat ya chips' boozing at ten in the morning, waving a fag like a lightsabre parenting.
Just trip advisor well and be selective. I Don't blame you for wanting a quiet holiday where that crap is the norm..
There is a beautiful site at durdle door if you google it.

Waltermittythesequel · 24/05/2016 07:06

I think, on balance, I won't book any for this year.

We were thinking of doing legoland or DLP for a couple of days and the reason Haven came up was I thinking we'd get a longer break for the same (or less) money but that doesn't really seem to be the case at this stage!

I'm aiming for the Perran thingy one in Cornwall as that seems the post popular here and more what I'm looking for. And is it pricier than I thought it would be!

I'm fairly flexible with the budget but I'd probably get 'away' away for the same price!

Thanks to do those haven't kept trying to turn this into a class issue. It really isn't intended to be!

I work at such a place, run the office in fact, so please bow down to me as the Queen of Scumbags. Our park is very efficiently run with several wardens who moniter 24 seven one slight issue or complaint against you you're out on your arse. Some of these parks management is as much as a problem as the clientele.

Gowgirl · 24/05/2016 07:27

Another survivor of pontins camber here!GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

SpaceDinosaur · 24/05/2016 07:58

I went to the holiday park at Camber Sands in the early 90's and it was dire and I was scared of the other children I remember that as a child!!!... Also you had to feed the electricity 20p's which was weird. Fortunately we went with some friends but it's still not an amazing memory as we were too scared to go anywhere.

My parents swore by Butlins Pethwelli (?) ...Wales! Because there were so many great places to visit locally and they let us explore too!

Currently PG with DC1. I like the idea of holiday camps, I think centre parcs is massively overpriced but I think the others are really hit and miss.

LittleLionMansMummy · 24/05/2016 08:07

I've never needed a paternity test conducting to determine the father of my children, nor have I demanded dh takes a lie detector test to find out whether he slept with my sister's boyfriend while I was pregnant. Although we did have a brief argument on the doorstep at the weekend over something fairly trivial.

Haven is ok, we have had fun as a family when we've gone. I imagine it reflects society generally - some families wanting a bit of fun together and some who just want to get pissed and play loud music. We've found that the former have vastly outweighed the latter.

BertieBeats · 24/05/2016 08:13

They're not taking a holiday there BrianCoxReturn ,what happens is a lot of the locals will work at the park and they get the free passes which they pass on to family members who can go up whenever. Unfortunately most of them do tend to be "chavvy" (I live in the right next to a Haven).

UmbongoUnchained · 24/05/2016 08:15

I went to haven and butlins when younger with family and we left early both times as it was just full of scummy chavs. Really can't bear to be around people like that. It's the same reason I'd never holiday somewhere like Benidorm.
And I'm very working class.
Mumsnet gets the word chav very confused.

WheresLarry · 24/05/2016 08:20

We were at a Haven park recently. I would describe it as a mix of people, just like everyday life. Yes I admit to thinking some people looked and sounded more rough than us, but I'm sure there were others who probably thought I looked rough.

Go in with an open mind, our kids loved it.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 24/05/2016 08:21

I've just looked at the haven website for summer holidays. Wow, how expensive?! No way we could afford that! We are going self catering in an apartment through air bnb for about a quarter of the price quoted for some of the "deluxe" caravans on the Haven site.

I'm not fussed who is around when I holiday as we keep ourselves to ourselves really, we don't really want clubhouse or entertainment or kids clubs etc so Haven wouldn't be good value for us at all. Each to their own, lots of people love that, we're grumpy anti social types who don't want to make friends on holiday ;)

I'm genuinely shocked at the prices though!

Roystonv · 24/05/2016 08:31

Yep, roughest holiday was in Egypt, very high Trip Advisor rating but obs all written by the same type of person, very weird like we had stepped into an alternative universe, I got flamed on TA for giving a poor review. I think op if you go to quieter more rural areas the resorts there may be more your thing.

OhMyGoddess · 24/05/2016 08:34

Perran Sands is one of the best Haven camps there is IMO. We are doing the sun holidays again this year and would go to Perran Sands if the car could get all the way to Cornwall, which it can't. I don't rate Park Resorts camps simply because they all seem quite tired and don't get much money spent on the facilities.

sockrage · 24/05/2016 08:43

Haven't read all thread but i have found the difference in families depends on the time of the year weirdly. We did the half term holidays and it was mostly decent families of all classes.

We did the same site at the start of the summer hols and it was awful. People pissed at ten in the morning, fighting in the entertainment complex, kids running riot (destroying stock on those flashy toys stands and repeatedly getting all stuff and throwing it everywhere while the young girl tried to stop them. Kids on the park hitting and spitting at others and peeing down the slides.

I am working class.

skivvywoman · 24/05/2016 08:43

Roy Egypt was my roughest holiday only time I've ever seen fighting on holiday!

We went to haven in Skegness years and years ago and it was fab for kids not rough at all was very expensive though!

Philoslothy · 24/05/2016 08:48

We have been on this type of holiday and loved it but we are "rough as" so I suspect you would want to avoid us. My family make Shameless look look like the Darling Buds of May
