To think London should step in and offer to host the Olympics?

With all the issues surrounding rio would it not make sense to shift it all over here?

I meant other South American countries can step in a host individual sports, not the full shebang. For instance, they regularly host world championships for individual sports. However, I agree, Rio will be ok when they need to be.

The problem with the Olympics is they are hosted, not by a full country but by a city, makes the atmosphere fabulous but logically a nightmare.

dizzytomato · 23/05/2016 12:52

Oh Andrew, you don't want to know, I cannot imagine what those people are going through! Someone squatted the house and turned it into a crackhouse-brothel and no one can get him evicted!

It's true, but I lived in Rio years ago and I love Rio but I admit I was dubious. We were in Rio a couple of months ago and to say it has had a face lift would be an understatement. Of course the changes, like I've already said, may not last the distance but they will last for the Olympics at least.

One of the big concerns is Zika, which is being played up by the British Media. It could go unnoticed for most people, most people are mildly sick for a few days and it is of no concern for anyone who is not pregnant or trying.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/05/2016 13:06

Good idea OP.

I'll start making 100,000 sandwiches for the welcome party.

Sunnsoo · 23/05/2016 13:18

If we just bulked it out with lentils then we could do it for half the price? Nobody will notice once they're in there. Smile

Bolograph · 23/05/2016 13:22

I think hosting the Olympics would require two chickens.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/05/2016 13:25

Two chickens?

Shock

Such an extravagant gesture would need to get approval from several committee members Bolo!

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/05/2016 13:26

I can put up a male rower and a male diver in my home.

Andrewofgg · 23/05/2016 14:02

Mitzy

What can you put up a male rower and a male diver in your own home and are you sure they won't object?

Andrew: behave yourself!

TendonQueen · 23/05/2016 15:34

Could I volunteer to take either a high jumper or a pole vaulter please? I often need help getting things down from high shelves.

HolesInTheFloor · 23/05/2016 15:50

I'll take care of Greg Rutherford. I don't have a spare room but I'm sure he'll understand. Also my garden is fairly big and I could host at least a third of the 100m race.

squoosh · 23/05/2016 16:02

I've got a spare couple of bottles of Robinson's that they're welcome to.

Chippednailvarnishing · 23/05/2016 16:24

I have a tent they could borrow...

nancy75 · 23/05/2016 16:56

I'm happy to host the 100m lawn mover dash in the back garden, I've got a bit of left over spag Bol in the fridge to feed them all when they finish

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 23/05/2016 17:39

I've got a paddling pool!

Chippednailvarnishing · 23/05/2016 17:40

We could get some Quality Street, dig out the round toffee ones (the ones with the gold wrappers) and tie ribbons to them. Perfect medals and biodegradable too sort of.

ExpandingRoundTheMiddle · 23/05/2016 17:49

Two chickens? Don't be daft. One'll stretch if we do vol au vents. No need for profligacy.

HolesInTheFloor · 23/05/2016 20:36

I would genuinly love to see mumsnetters host an olympic games. I imagine it would mostly just be cakes and a shit load of bunting.

TendonQueen · 23/05/2016 20:56

Think of the AIBU threads!

iisme · 23/05/2016 21:15

I don't understand all the fuss about the zika virus - if you're not pregnant, there's no problem, and I seriously doubt many of the athletes will be pregnant. I very much doubt all this drama will come to anything - it never does. But I'm loving the MN olympics! I don't have a garden but DS (6) is crazy about dancing - maybe he can put something together for the opening ceremony?

StealthPolarBear · 23/05/2016 21:18

People all go to watch the Olympics I believe

Chippednailvarnishing · 23/05/2016 21:22

MN Olympics - gin and a maypole!

Andrewofgg · 24/05/2016 01:05

Skip the bloody maypole!

Chippednailvarnishing · 24/05/2016 09:09

Boris, Dave et al strangling themselves with some brightly coloured ribbon would be a highlight!

Andrewofgg · 24/05/2016 10:14

No, the entire IOC. Better still, to the stake with them . . .

Chippednailvarnishing · 24/05/2016 10:25

Joan of arc reenactment?
