With all the issues surrounding rio would it not make sense to shift it all over here?

OP posts:
Spudlet · 22/05/2016 17:27

The ground preparation takes months!

Grilledaubergines · 22/05/2016 17:29

(A) it's impossible

(B) we had our turn and did a bloody amazing job of bringing it all together and making it a huge success (those Games Makers were brilliant) , and giving the country serious credibility when our countries were looking to mock. Let's leave it that way and have ended on a high.

Grilledaubergines · 22/05/2016 17:29

Other, not 'our'

specialsubject · 22/05/2016 17:31

Yes, lets go billions over budget on a giant sports day again. 2012 was an enormous financial cock up. Yes, of course it looked good - infinite cash and huge amounts of free labour does that!

Andrewofgg · 22/05/2016 17:33

No. Just No. It can't be done. The offer would make us look absurd.

paxillin · 22/05/2016 17:35

We didn't manage to get the security on time when we KNEW it was our turn in 2012. We had to use the army. That was embarrassing, let's not point at others, they might just point back.

AHellOfABird · 22/05/2016 17:38

I do think it would be logical for there to be one set of Olympic facilities for the world, funded by the IOC and asvertisers, and for those facilities to always be used.

Never gonna happen though!

byjimminey · 22/05/2016 17:41

Whats the problem with Rio?

NewLife4Me · 22/05/2016 17:43

You didn't think it through OP Grin
it's Sunday we'll forgive you.

Littleallovertheshop · 22/05/2016 17:47

Lol.

The commonwealth games were only 2 years ago and it's all back to how it was - I hate to think how far from usable some of the London facilities are now....

Greydog · 22/05/2016 17:47

no - waste of money.

LunaLoveg00d · 22/05/2016 17:51

How many Gamesmakers volunteers were needed? There were around 15,000 volunteers helping at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, would imagine several times that for the Olympics. Recruitment and training took years.

You can't just put on a massive event like the Olympics in a couple of months, how bloody ridiculous.

TSSDNCOP · 22/05/2016 17:52

China was going to be a flop because of the pollution, Sthens was going to be a flop because every time the builders broke ground they discovered another ancient ruin and London was going to be a flop when G4 cocked up and we had men on telly explaining the best flats to use for an RPG strike.

Rio will be just fine.

PseudoBadger · 22/05/2016 17:53

I get worried when we receive a community event application with 2 months to go Grin

TheoriginalLEM · 22/05/2016 17:56

excuse my total ignorance -i what has happened in rio?

Janeymoo50 · 22/05/2016 17:59

Hmmmm, best we check and see if Paul McCartney and Elton Wrong are available first for the opening ceremony.

AdrenalineFudge · 22/05/2016 18:01

LEM It's more of a case of what hasn't happened. They are woefully behind schedule and unprepared. There are reports of incomplete structures, heavy pollution and open sewers which will obviously put both athletes and spectators at risk.

NotYoda · 22/05/2016 18:03

It seems clear that Rio is in a mess, more so than other Games at this stage

But of course the OP's premise is ridiculous. It took 6 years to organise the Olympics. It's not like putting on a Village Fete

Ludways · 22/05/2016 18:04

It's not just a case of a pool there and stadium here, sorted. Most of the infrastructure has been taken down, sold, used for something else. I think quite a lot of the temporary stadiums have actually been shipped over to Rio and rebuilt there. Accommodation for athletes and staff is virtually non-existent now.

I remember there being the same worries in Greece but everything was ok, they'll be working like crazy in Rio, to have it ready in time.

Mistigri · 22/05/2016 18:07

Totally out of the question. Even processing visas and finding accommodation for all the athletes and officials would be almost impossible at this stage, let alone readying the infrastructure/ security/ equipment.

PalmerViolet · 22/05/2016 18:07

Sorry, but laughing like a drain here.

London couldn't organise security, comms or stewarding for the Olympics when they had years of notice. That was mine and friends DHs who did that, including a fair few who lost their post tour leave in order to bridge the gaps.

Oh, yeah great idea! All those lazy arsed armed forces personnel coud step in and do the security again for no extra pay! I mean none of them have got families they haven't seen or anything! Hmm

Babymamamama · 22/05/2016 18:13

As far as I know all the athletes accommodation has already been converted into flats and sold off. And westfield is a fully functioning shopping centre. Would be tricky to turn back time.

WriteforFun1 · 22/05/2016 18:15

sorry I was so busy being horrified at the idea that I forgot to add any comment to my long noooo...

but I had friends who volunteered, services friends who had to cover gaps in security and my parents attended. (I left London for the duration though I gather everyone else did too so on reflection, a waste of annual leave).

It's a massive massive mission even with years of notice! OP might have had a few with lunch Grin
