to not get hot shorts for a 12 year old

I'm clothes shopping with my 12 year old. She picks up a pair of hot shorts and wants them but I refuse. In the end we agreed on slightly longer shorts.

I feel conflicted though I want her to feel free to wear what she wants as any woman is entitled to. But I also feel, now she is becoming a woman, I don't want her dressed in a sexualised way - men look, it's not nice, that's reality. But then again, I'm glad she's innocent and unaware of that (she just wants to look cool)

What do you think mm jury? Aibu to refuse the hotshorts?

I think a flash of toned, tanned midriff

What about untoned midriff?

sonlypuppyfat · 22/05/2016 08:33

You should be able to wear what you want but my DD went out in her shorts and came home very upset by the cars that papped their horns at her and men shouting at her

Stillwishihadabs · 22/05/2016 08:34

Well that's why I keep mine covered up now (except on holiday). But men do take their shirts off regardless. Tbh most of the teens I see round here are toned.

Stillwishihadabs · 22/05/2016 08:36

I'm sorry your dd had that experience Sonly, is teaching her to give the idiots the finger unacceptable ?

CodyKing · 22/05/2016 08:38

What about untoned teens?

Fat face not sure if it's incredibly uncool do nice shorts. Short but not bum cheek hanging out short.

I tried on a pair of the most brilliant green shirts in new look the other day. Bum cheeks ahoy! They went back on the rail...

Im on the fence here, I think anybody should be able to wear whatever they like, my daughter is only 7 and still very much a child, but i do worry that if she develops like me by the time she is 12, she will be tall, with boobs and hips etc. I remember myself if I ever wore anything slightly more skin showing or even something that wasn't revealing but more grown up as opposed to neon coloured and pop band t-shirts I would get very unwanted male attention, there were a few occasions when my mum or a friend of hers would have to inform a fully grown man that I was in fact a 12 year old child, which was embarrassing for me and often humiliating for them. I think you can still put shorts on if the rest of the outfit isn't to grown up, I just don't think children should be put in outfits that replicate that of 20 something year olds , eg. shorts , trainers/pumps and a cute t-shirt is fine.
But again this is an ideal in my head, i know at 12 I was super stubborn about what i wanted to wear lol. x

They are naff but I wore all sorts of naff as teenager.
Take photos - they will look back and cringe.
They don't look particularly sexual either. Worth ensuring that aren't too tight so they don't run the risk of rubbing or thrush.

imwithspud · 22/05/2016 08:55

YANBU I wouldn't buy really short, bum hanging out type shorts for my dd either. The shorts in the picture posted further up look nice though.

BrandNewAndImproved · 22/05/2016 08:55

Hadas everyone's going to rip you apart now.

I don't mind my dd wearing short shorts as long as there isn't bum cheeks out, I also wear short shorts and I like the look. I would hate to wear over the knee shorts I like getting my legs out.
