About smart casual meaning no jeans?

DH and I have been invited to the evening bash of a wedding tonight and the dress code is smart casual. I think this means he can't wear jeans and should wear trousers/shirt/jacket or suit/shirt but no tie. He thinks jeans/shirt/jacket are alright as he argues they're dark and therefore smart jeans.

Which one of us is being unreasonable?

It turns out I know nothing. Most guests were in jeans - plenty of day guests had changed into jeans. There were lots of singlets and trainers and barely a tie in sight. DH was on the smarter side in trousers/shirt/blazer/shoes but didn't stand out. It was a lovely party.

No jeans at the one we were at last night. But no dress code was specified anyway.

There were lots of singlets

I haven't heard the word singlet for about 30 years when someone wearing one to give evidence in a coroner's court was ruled in contempt and sent to think about his behaviour in the cells for a couple of hours. It was rather inappropriate dress for such a solemn occasion but I feel the coroner should have cut him some slack, what with him being the deceased's brother.

LadyFlip I live in Red Trouser Central and have contributed to that site Grin

Glad you enjoyed yourself OP

The only thing worse than a chino is a chino paired with formal black shoes

They're not chinos and he's a middle aged Englishman, but otherwise you are spot on LikeDylanInTheMovies?

limited I know, who takes formal black shoes on their holidays?

Isn't a singlet a vest??

Laughing at the suggestion evening guests need to blend with day guests. By the time the evening guests come along, the day guests are largely well oiled! Ties are off, jackets discarded. Anyone who looks down their nose at someone in jeans probably has spent all day worrying about how they look themselves.

I am intrigued to know what you are describing as a singlet- surely not wedding guests in vests?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/05/2016 08:55

Singlet is probably waist coat.

diddl · 23/05/2016 09:00

I should also think that a singlet is a waistcoat in this context.

Are two singlets a doublet??Grin

Yes I meant vest - I didn't know it was such an unusual word to use. I didn't know it would be used to describe a waistcoat either so still learning. Smile

I'd call it a vest but I like the word singlet. It reminds me of frock and slacks. I think Americans call a waistcoat a vest.

I think I'm not of my era - I wouldn't say slacks but definitely love and use the word frock.

I overthink I'd use a vest to describe an underwear vest, these were much more substantial than that - nice thick straps you could wear a bra under, though they were being worn by men.

Smart dark jeans, shirt and jacket. To me, suit with no tie is general business dress as nobody wears ties anymore really anyway.

Some men could do with wearing a bra OP Wink

Hilarious- an entire thread stressing about whether dark jeans were formal enough and half the other male guests were wearing VESTS? Where was this wedding, Faliraki?

You're describing a garment that is known as a wife beater diddl. Before anyone gets conniptions we both wear them. We have gym-honed arms and like to show them off but that's as far as it goes.

Yes diddl a sleeveless t-shirt. Though I also wore a sleeveless top (and have lovely gym toned arms) so I'm in no position to judge.
