To be frightened to fly EgyptAir this summer?

EddyF · 19/05/2016 13:08

Flights all booked and confirmed for me and 10 year old daughter for late June.

Did not book directly via site but third party. Stop-over will be at Cairo Intl Arpt for around 3hrs. Flying with EgyptAir. Going to Africa.

Would you fly after today's news?

100:1 is high odds, therefore unlikely to happen. 2:1 is low odds, therefore likely to happen.

Hissy I couldn't agree with you more about Egypt and its government. At every level of society people lie and lie to avoid admitting blame or failure. They're arrogant. That's why I think they are encouraging people to think it's a bomb to cover up the fact that Egypt air is a shitty airline.
As for the theory the bomb has been placed in Cairo, it's a bit of a stretch. Has something like that been proven to happen before? If this is the case, then you are at risk flying any airline. For example a BA plane could fly to Cairo and have a bomb placed on it (because of the lax security). It returns to Heathrow and is turned around to fly to another destination. The bomb then goes off.

So sad and so difficult. My parents fly to Egypt annually and have done since I was tiny even in the height of the troubles as we are part Egyptian. They often fly via Paris but not egyptair - YANBU - I'm terrified as they could have easily been caught in today's tragedy.

WannaBe · 19/05/2016 17:16

But the plane flew out of France. It's not enough to say that the plane might have flown out of somewhere with a lesser security record beforehand, because truth is that responsibility for its security at the time of departure lies with the French authorities.

So even if by some small chance a bomb could have been planted elsewhere (which tbh is unlikely) the French are still responsible for a plane leaving their airport with a bomb on board.

That being said, if it was a terrorist incident someone would have claimed responsibility by now.

scarednoob · 19/05/2016 17:20

I've always thought it was mad that the passengers have such strict security checks (I can't even take sufficient breast milk for DD when I fly in a fortnight's time), but you have no idea who's loading the suitcases etc etc etc. In today's horribly troubling times, I worry that it's an easy thing to exploit :(

lem73 · 19/05/2016 17:20

The fact it has gone down over the sea in a particularly deep part of the Med makes me think it is a bomb. I remember the planners of the Lockerbie bombing had intended it to go down over the sea so evidence would be destroyed. The flight was delayed and it ended up detonating over Scotland unfortunately. The authorities did find the evidence that led to Libya.

WannaBe · 19/05/2016 17:24

But if it was a bomb, then the likelihood is that it was put on the plane in France.

It would be impossible to put a bomb on a plane elsewhere which was so specifically timed to go off at a specific time in a specific area, because you couldn't legislate for delays etc over the course of two flights.

But I don't actually think it was a bomb.

Darrelrivers · 19/05/2016 17:28

No I wouldn't fly aireygpt but it breaks my Cardinal rule of air travel.if I've never heard of them I don't fly with them. They are generally the ones which crash. I wouldn't holiday in or travel through Eygpt. It's a very unstable country. Yes statistically the chances of something happening are still low but much higher than most other places on the brit tourist route. Besides anything it's the worth this has planted in your mind now. This is looking like another hijack from what people are saying. I'd rather lose the money and not spend the next few months worrying.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2016 17:31

Thank you clam

Foofoobum · 19/05/2016 17:34

Has anyone actually come out and said it was definitely a bomb or a terror related incident? I would wait until there's more definitive proof before freaking out. There's more likelihood of being hit by a drunk driver in uk than being killed by a terrorist bomb on a plane.

SolomanDaisy · 19/05/2016 17:35

It's not clear yet that it was a bomb. The pattern of the aircraft making a couple of sharp turns before disappearing from the radar suggests that the pilot had time to attempt some sort of action, which probably wouldn't have been the case with an on-board bomb (unless it was detonated by a person on board rather than a timed device).

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/05/2016 17:41

Egyptian authorities don't care about the population. The fewer the better

Sadly, it appears there may be a lot in that Sad

gabbyevs · 19/05/2016 17:44

for people saying they wouldnt fly egyptair now

would you also not fly ba and virgin who have also had crashes

MummyBex1985 · 19/05/2016 17:48

Virgin Atlantic have never had a fatal plane crash.

heavily touching wood

Hydroshield · 19/05/2016 17:49

And it's been decades since BA last had a fatal crash.
also touching wood

Roonerspism · 19/05/2016 18:09

scared exactly. I think about this too. You find another means. I heard a rumour that lots of workers were recently dismissed at Paris CDG for fears of links to terrorism.

JeffFromTheDailyMail · 19/05/2016 18:16

I blacklisted Egypt from our potential holidays after our last visit in 2013. It just felt dangerous then so I dread to think what it's like now. Awful for the millions of Egyptians who rely on the tourist trade though

lem73 · 19/05/2016 18:17

Life is cheap in Egypt. I used to live there and remember reading in the local English newspaper that a wall had collapsed in a government school and seven children had been killed. It was in a single column on like page 7. I told Egyptian friends and they'd never heard of it. Can you imagine if that happened here? But in Egypt, what's a few poor kids?

CaveMum · 19/05/2016 18:18

Sorry all Blush of course I meant "incredibly low" I think I meant to say "not very high" but got distracted Blush Blush

CaveMum · 19/05/2016 18:20

Look at you lot making me doubt myself! Yes the odds ARE very high. I work in racing so I'm used to talking about things in terms of betting Wink

Only1scoop · 19/05/2016 18:20

Phew Cave

That's what we all thought Smile

SoulSoSeptimus · 19/05/2016 18:21

I lived in Egypt for 2 years.

I wouldn't go this summer.

clam · 19/05/2016 18:25

No, Cave was right in the first place! Don't be doubting her.

The odds of an aircraft just crashing to the ground mid-flight for no reason ARE incredibly high, meaning it is UNLIKELY to happen.

Sallyingforth · 19/05/2016 18:38

I would not travel anywhere in the middle east now.
There are plenty of other places to go, so why take the risk?

pinkmagic1 · 19/05/2016 18:47

We flew Egyptair in February on our annual trip to see family in Egypt and it would not overly concern me to use them again. Yes, there is a risk but the odds are much higher on me being involved in a fatal car crash but that doesn't stop me driving to work.
As for visiting Egypt, we go primarily to see family and they live on a small holding in a rural area. I don't feel especially unsafe but can't comment on Cairo as haven't been there for years. I think if you are stopping in a tourist area or a busy city, you are probably at risk anywhere in the world in the current climate, not just North African/Middle eastern countries, as the recent atrocities in europe proved.
