To be frightened to fly EgyptAir this summer?

EddyF · 19/05/2016 13:08

Flights all booked and confirmed for me and 10 year old daughter for late June.

Did not book directly via site but third party. Stop-over will be at Cairo Intl Arpt for around 3hrs. Flying with EgyptAir. Going to Africa.

Would you fly after today's news?

" The odds of an aircraft just crashing to the ground mid-flight for no reason are incredibly high."
What?! Shock

Queenbean · 19/05/2016 16:25

The odds of an aircraft just crashing to the ground mid-flight for no reason are incredibly high

What?

Purplepicnic · 19/05/2016 16:27

Because lem it's possible that any device was planted on the plane in Cairo where security is more lax than in Paris.

PeaStalks · 19/05/2016 16:28

Unbelievable how many people are happy to go to Egypt on holiday after 220 people were killed last October. How quickly they forget.
Lots of people have taken instead to flying into Hurgarda (which is perfectly safe)
I expect those Russians thought Sharm was safe before they boarded their flight.

NeonNails · 19/05/2016 16:34

I fly to Egypt regularly for work - we now take additional security steps there but it remains a concern. We no longer go to sharm or Alexandria on "local" advice

NeonNails · 19/05/2016 16:34

Sorry should have said I fly to Cairo regularly.

exLtEveDallas · 19/05/2016 16:37

I went to Hurghada last year PeaStalks, and the year before that, and two years before that. Hurghada itself is perfectly safe. Hurghada airport is a military installation with better security than Sharm and from what I understand (from my friends currently in situ) the security there has improved again since last we returned.

Each to their own, hey Smile

TwirlsInTwirlsOutAgain · 19/05/2016 16:38

Why anyone would want to holiday in Egypt or fly there in the current climate is beyond me.

Hissy · 19/05/2016 16:39

Yes. Security will be higher. And if it is the same cause as the germanwings disaster there will be actions taken.

I lived there for 3 years under the much safer Mubarak rule. Sadly the above statement about being safer now, higher security and actions taken is unlikely to be at all realistic.

Egyptian authorities don't care about the population. The fewer the better.

EgyptAir is an awful airline, couldn't run a bath In my experience. The 1999 crash in NY was covered up and they blamed maintenance rather than pilot suicide. It's all quiet about the German wings bomb, and they'll all be there in their uniforms shrugging their shoulders. In all of its 7000 years of history, Egyptians didn't tend to record their defeats, they don't face up to failure either. Arush, arush

The only positive is that planes bring dollars, and that is all that matters. Egypt derives huge amounts of money from tourism, but they haven't been able to do anything concrete to make Egypt more secure or safer.

If cheap sun is what you crave, for now you have to realise that there's a reason it's cheap. You won't get health and safety, you won't get security and freedom.

TheWitTank · 19/05/2016 16:40

I'm not someone who is easily panicked or that gets worried easily over terrorists/flights etc but I wouldn't fly to or via Egypt at this present time. It's just too unstable and to be honest, it's not a nice place to visit. The pyramids are amazing of course, but the atmosphere is very tense and it feels unsafe. I haven't been to Sharm but I wouldn't risk it personally.

exLtEveDallas · 19/05/2016 16:40

Lovely weather, great people, superb diving, interesting history, fun, relaxation, luxury - oh, and waterparks!

Good job we aren't all the same, life would be very boring if we were.

Only1scoop · 19/05/2016 16:41

Cave mum

That statement false

pambeesley · 19/05/2016 16:42

I lived in sharm for a while and no way would I go there now. And bussing it from hurgada through the regions it travel is incredibly dangerous and all for a cheap holiday?!?!

snickers251 · 19/05/2016 16:43

I'm supposed to be in Sharm right now :( we went twice last year including a day trip to Cairo. Bloody love the place but I won't be going back anytime soon with the situation as it is now.

We flew back less than a month before the attack and we had already booked for this year and although normally I would brush it off with "it can happen anywhere" I was relieved when it was cancelled.

Hissy · 19/05/2016 16:44

OP, id advise you contact your agent and ask/insist to be re-routed.

Highsteaks · 19/05/2016 16:47

YANBU. At all.

GlitterGlassEye · 19/05/2016 16:47

I went to Egypt (Sharm el Sheik) in 2013 on recommendations of friends and family and I hated it. Found it very intimidating even with quite bulky dp. We were even kept in the resort 1 day for security reasons, huge gang of men fighting outside. Terrifying. And yeah the airport security is pretty relaxed.

KatharinaRosalie · 19/05/2016 16:48

I'm pretty sure caveMum meant that the odds are low, not high.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 19/05/2016 16:50

Yeah I came to say what Katherina said. Typo I think, Cavemum meant low.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/05/2016 16:50

Yanbu, no way would I be flying in and out of Egypt.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2016 16:53

But she has said the complete opposite!

Queenbean · 19/05/2016 17:04

Typos are pretty easy to make Stealth

clam · 19/05/2016 17:10

No, cavemum is correct. The odds are high, the likelihood is low.

CrowyMcCrowFace · 19/05/2016 17:10

I live & work in Cairo, & love it here.

We fly Egyptair regularly. It's the drive to the airport that's the dangerous bit tbh!

EddyF · 19/05/2016 17:11

Thank you all. I have not had the time to read all replies but will do so when I get home. I am not holidaying in Egypt. I will be transit there for about 3 to 4 hours to connect my flight to African location (sorry being vague)

The airline will be with EgyptAir. Finances are really tight so can't even even afford to lose the money tbh.

Thanks again
