AIBU to think kittens belong to mother's owner

Without going into too much detail.... If a cat gets pregnant by a very specific (uncommon breed so noticeable) male cat while out at night (not my cat lol!) can the owners of the male cat hold any claim to the kittens if they're made aware of them?

Friend has spayed the mother now so no criticism needed but trying to help her with some dodgy neighbours and their unneutered tom.

They are just moggies by the way but the ones I saw online were too and they were £150 or higher.... Seems people are gullible enough when half pedigree is involved Sad May not be worth it but it seems someone would pay

The kitty mum owns the kittens

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 16/05/2016 21:15

Don't give the neighbour one. Don't even pay them for it. There is not agreement between both parties about breeding the cats.

if they insist present them with a bill for 50% of the total cost for looking after the kittens inc vetinary care, any vaccinations they need, cost of neutering all kittens, microchipping etc. also throw in the cost of extra food for mum, transport costs to the vet etc.

I'm pretty sure they will back down.

PovertyPain · 16/05/2016 21:21

Tell your friend not to worry. The kittens belong to the mother cat and it sounds like the tom's owners are trying to pull a scam and sell them as thoroughbreds. I got three kittens that were born in the same litter to two different fathers. One looks like a short haired moggy, one is a beautiful long haired cat and one could very easily be mistaken for a Banger Blue. They can yap all they like, but there's nothing they can do and I wouldn't let them have any of the kittens. They sound like arseholes that treat animals as commodities.

Btw, kittens are much more sociable and their mum will litter train them, if they stay with her until 12 weeks.

WalkingBlind Pussy hussy? Grin

Puffinity · 16/05/2016 21:24

Supermancat is a female btw

NeedACleverNN · 16/05/2016 21:25

I have a Maine coon cross....

She is a moggy. She will be registered as a moggy and she will be spayed. I also didn't pay three figures for her. I paid a little higher than the £30 that is usually around here but not much more. I only paid slightly higher because she was wormed, flea'd and she was fluffy. She was also slightly different colours to all the common moggies round here

The 'is it a girl?' question makes me wonder if they are thinking of backyard breeding her back to Papa to coin in on more fluffster kittens.

I'd tell them to sod off. If their chap was stud quality - leaving aside the nastiness of backyard breeding - they could make their money from him legitimately. Chancers, & definitely not anyone you'd entrust a kitten to.

Tiopyn · 16/05/2016 21:47

I'm worried they're thinking of backyard breeding, too.
They have no rights at all, and I wouldn't want to give them one under the circumstances. But if your friend does decide to let them have one, definitely make sure it isn't a girl! Poor thing could be bred until she drops. :(

shillwheeler · 16/05/2016 21:48

No claims. Personally wouldn't let the neighbours near them, and hope your friend finds good homes for the kittens. Female cats can actually give birth to kittens of multiple fathers, and unless you have purposefully mated them and the mother cat had not had contact with any other male cat, would be hard pushed to prove they were the offspring off the offending Tom any way.

ReallyTired · 16/05/2016 22:11

It costs £30 to do a DNA test on a cat.

Taking a swab from any of the cats would make the fights on Jermany Kyle tame in comparison.

Catsize · 16/05/2016 23:09

Tom gets access at a contCat centre on a Saturday.
And should make regular Cat Support Agency payments.

BadLad · 16/05/2016 23:40

Without a court order they stay with the mother.

MiddleClassProblem · 16/05/2016 23:47

It's such a shame grandparents don't have rights in a situation like this

ReallyTired · 16/05/2016 23:51

The court will need to decide what is in the best interest of the kittys. Is there an expectation that the mother kitty should provide halal food because the kits dad once peed on a mosque? Breastfeeding is important, but there will come a time when the kittys dad might want overnight access. The kitty mum has concerns that the kitty dad has history of violence and sex with under age kittys.

cozietoesie · 16/05/2016 23:53

They probably want a 'fluffy girl' to mate with their 'fluffy tom'. Heck of a life for her.

They have no rights at all in the matter, though.

steff13 · 16/05/2016 23:57

Would people really pay that much for a 1/2 Maine Coon? We got ours for free from someone giving them away.

cozietoesie · 17/05/2016 00:06

Some people will pay £££ for a cat that they're just told is a Maine Coon and any kittens would likely look like one. (And pedigree certificates are easy enough to forge anyway - it's a serious cash generating business these days.)

WalkingBlind · 17/05/2016 00:30

Honestly I see normal short-haired going for £250 just because they're white or ginger Confused

This thread has became hilarious by the way lol

When I was a kid we had a kitten so fluffy that we named her......Fluffy!
She grew up to be a smooth, sleek cat.
They may not stay fluffy!

steff13 · 17/05/2016 00:33

Wow, my Maine Coon's sister is a short haired ginger cat. Apparently their mother was a bit of a hussy.

This reminds of when my friend's neighbour's v expensive and pampered pedigree cat had kittens. She'd been expensively studded by another pedigree cat and her owners (and my friend, then a child) eagerly awaited the birth.

One morning the neighbour banged angrily on my friend's back door, clutching a box containing his pedigree cat and 7 cute little kittens. 7 cute little kittens that looked nothing like their Persian mother but EXACTLY like my friend's big ginger tabby bruiser of an unneutered male cat Grin.

It seems that Mrs Persian had entertained a certain tabby caller shortly before she made Mr Persian's aquaintance.

Neighbour was apoplectic with rage but friend's dad just shrugged and offered to rehome them all on his smallholding, mum included. So friend got a lovely load of kittens and a very spoiled housecat, and ALL the cats got a neutering (no-one wanted ANY more kittens for a very long time). I was very jealous as I secretly hoped she'd let us have a kitten or two, but no.

bloodyteenagers · 17/05/2016 00:51

Get them all neutered. Google cats protection or blue cross locally. They usually do something affordable.

Friend fobs the neighbour off for as long as possible. Not sure what we are doing yet.
Will decide once they are at least 12 weeks. Need to get them vaxed and chipped.

Then after they are been neutered. Fb post.. Aww look at the kitties. So proud of them. So brave at the vets today getting chipped, vaxed and neutered.

I am another one that got hers for free. Their mum was a long haired hussy that escaped. She gave birth to long haired and short haired kittens. I got the fluffiest and his short haired brother that no one wanted.

MattDillonsPants · 17/05/2016 01:12

If I owned the Mother then I would probably give the Tom's family a kitten. Not a problem.
