To ask if/when your baby's eyes changed colour?

DD is about 8 months old and still has her enormous baby blues. Mine are green and DP's are a dark hazel, so I've been expecting them to change for ages. People in both families have blue eyes so there will be genes in there somewhere but I was sure they'd get beaten into submission by the overwhelming mass of brown genes!

It's only a little light hearted thing but I've gotten used to her beautiful baby blues and would rather love it if they stayed. Did your baby stay with the colour they were born with, or did they change, and when?

Roomba that eye colouring is called central heterochromia (multi coloured eyes with central symmetry). I have it and previously described my eyes as hazel (in fact I thought that 'hazel' was the way to describe that colouring). Now I usually just say green although my eyes can appear as green/grey/brown or even blue depending on what I'm wearing and the light.

dd's eyes were blue up until she was five or so when the other colours started to become more dominant (now her eyes look just like mine). Her hair was also blonde (now mid-brown) so not at all like dh and me (both dark haired and dh has very dark brown eyes). She was a very pretty toddler, but a bit of a 'cuckoo', and we assumed a throwback to some previous generation. Now people say she looks very like me (poor kid! I still think she is beautiful :))

I can't remember ds having blue eyes, I think they must have been that dark blue when he was tiny but they went brown very early. He has some heterochromia as they changed from the same dark shade all over like dh to paler in the middle.

Two of mine had blue eyes for over a year before they turned brown- it can happen quite late.

AdrenalineFudge · 15/05/2016 19:35

I'm mixed race and I have green eyes. I started life with hazel and my sister has blue eyes. I like my eyes but it took some getting used to having blonde afro hair Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/05/2016 19:37

Ds had navy blue eyes which changed to brown- dh has blue eyes and I have grey!

WalkingBlind · 15/05/2016 19:52

DD has her dad's eyes exactly. Like, mirror image (bright blue, brown flecks). I have green eyes and DS's dad has hazel.... Baby DS still has eyes so dark they match his pupils Blush Who knows what colour they will go

DramaAlpaca · 15/05/2016 19:56

I have hazel eyes & DH's are green. DS1 had blue eyes as a baby and I really thought they would change colour, it was only when they were still blue when he was six months old that I began to think they might stay like that - and they did, they are a lovely bluey grey.

BrendaFurlong · 15/05/2016 20:01

DH has green/hazel eyes
I have bright green eyes
Both the DC had blue/grey eyes until the age of about 4
DD1 now has bright green eyes with golden flecks, and DD2 has olive green eyes.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 15/05/2016 20:05

DD was coming up to a year when her blue eyes were noticeably changing to hazel, but I had seen hints of it before. Now my year old brown eyed DS has started to have a slightly grey look - but I don't think brown eyes can change.

ErgonomicallyUnsound · 15/05/2016 20:12

DD had blue eyes til she was 2. Then they changed to blue grey, then blue green and by the time she was 6 they were green. She's 9 now and they look different on different days. They are what we call "forest". Grin

DSs went brown when he was 8 weeks and stayed the same.

scarednoob · 15/05/2016 21:02

I think Asian and African babies are born with brown eyes. my friend is 3/4 and her husband is white - she has 2 brown eyed and 1 blue eyed child. the brown eyed 2 were born with brown eyes. and one of my nct group is Italian and hers was born with eyes like 2 massive meaty maltesers. so I think maybe the answer is most Caucasian babies?

DS 1 had blue eyes until he was about 4. They are now hazel like DH's. DD and DS2 have blue eyes like me.

Binkybix · 15/05/2016 21:41

I'm watching my babies with baited breath as they currently have one that is half green-ish half brown (sort of in stripes) and one that is still blue. I'm sure it will change but it would be pretty cool if it doesn't! She's 7 months.

2ManySweets · 15/05/2016 21:45

"meaty malteasers" wins my "MN post of the month" award 😂

Sorry OP. Actually piddling myself laughing xxxxxxxxx

2ManySweets · 15/05/2016 21:46

Also: if I look at my 13w baby's eyes from above or to the side there is a definite light-brown tone breaking through the blue x

dillydotty · 15/05/2016 21:52

My youngest's didn't change until well after a year. They were quite a light blue for ages. I remember so clearly because of the comments from ex in laws - both ex and I have dark brown eyes Hmm

n0ne · 15/05/2016 22:11

Yes! DD was born with grey-blue eyes which I was chuffed about as mine are dark brown but I fully expected them to change at some point. Nope, they're still grey-blue at 3yo, and I assume they'll stay that way now. My dad had blue eyes and DH's eyes are blue, as are both his parents, but I assumed brown would override all of that.

scarednoob · 16/05/2016 21:21

gah for the meaty maltesers! stupid phone Grin

DD was born with blue eyes like me, over the years, now nearly 9 they have gone green and little bit hazel with one small brown dot in one eye.

Grilledaubergines · 16/05/2016 21:35

Oddly my eye colour went from blue to green when I was about 15! They're a lovely green still, more so when I wear green - seems to bring out the green-ness even more.

Sorry, not that helpful!

PotteryLottery · 16/05/2016 21:41

DD born blue but changed to green in Y1. Teacher noticed, I hadn't!

Toddzoid · 16/05/2016 21:44

I was two when mine changed from blue to green. My DD's were dark blue until around 10 months when they turned brown. DS's have always been grey/green/blue. I'm obsessed with them.

screamingeels · 16/05/2016 21:45

Ha - I am really pleased to hear the stories of late changing eye colours. I am convinced my eye colour changed to a very distinctive green/ amber mix as a late teen from a muddy hazel.. and that DD's will go the same way. My Mum who is an unreliable guide to my childhood disagrees. Only another 10 yrs before we find out who is right!

toffeeboffin · 16/05/2016 21:54

I'd say at 8 months they are here to stay.

DS had grey eyes at birth (which were gorgeous) which then turned and stayed blue at one month old.

CantWaitForWarmWeather · 16/05/2016 21:57

My 3 boys were all born with blue eyes and then their eye colour changed to hazel within their first year.

DS3 (17 months) still has a little patch of blue in one of his eyes. I think it's a permanent thing and I like it because it's his little distinctive feature. :)
