Do you think my son's wrist is broken?

My son is 11 and is in Year 6. He plays football at lunch.

He fell over and was rolling around on the floor telling his friend to get a teacher. She came over - not a teacher, but the lunch assistant. Told him to get up, he got up and she asked if he was okay now and he said that his wrist was hurting. She said he should go to medical. He goes off to medical with his friend. The lady in medical is the receptionist, but she has done a first aid course. She was touching it and was asking if he could feel her and he said yes, but it was hurting. She said "I think you'll be fine" and he said no but it hurts and can't move it properly, she said that's why happens after an injury and that if he broke it he would be in absolute tears, so she knows it isn't Hmm

He was sent to his classroom, his teacher even said it looked a little odd and my son said that he had already been to medical and she said it was fine, so his teacher just left it. I got him at the end of the day and he was okay, gave him some pain relief and seemed alright, he said it was still a bit sore. I suggested to the medical lady (as I went to the office when I got him as his teacher gave me a medical slip, which means there is a recorded accident) that maybe I should get it X-Rayed... She told me to definitely not worry about that and it will just be wasting A and E time and resources as he clearly isn't in distress. I'm not medically trained at all. So I did take her word for it... He has woken up today, with it looking a little bit bruised and not able to properly move it. I was going to take him, but his dad said that I shouldn't worry because school said it was fine. He has been okay today, he has just been watching films, not moving it, but now I'm not sure if I should just go against everyone and take him???

What do you think...? Sorry if I'm coming across a bit stupid, I have never dealt with a broken bone before! He has never even needed to go to a and e.

Do you think my son's wrist is broken?

I would take him too, it doesn't look right at all.

Go to A&E.

Now.

Do not wait till morning to see if it gets better.

Some kids put up with an awful lot. It may not be broken, but it looks broken.

Oh and no more food til he's seen, water or squash only, in case he needs surgery.

Hope you don't have too long a wait.

I broke my wrist ice-skating and the first aid team had a look, thought it wasn't broken. I could move it at first then I went off and sat down and it just kept getting more and more painful and swollen.

Can he touch it ok? I remember I couldn't even bear even a light tap on my wrist it hurt so much.

I think it could be, it doesn't look right. Definitely x-ray at A&E to rule it out

Took a while to figure out the picture, the hand at the top yes?

Anyway - it looks dodgy, definitely get it checked.

He's just getting dressed and we will be going.

His hand is at the top - it's cut off...

The other hand is mine, holding his arm. If that makes any sense

Agree with everyone. Don't ask us ask a doctor and get X ray :)

You're not necessarily in terrible pain with a broken wrist. My dd wasn't and hers was badly broken and needed two operations to put it right. But while we were waiting for the x-ray she was happily playing with her brothers in the waiting area!

Yes. just like my ds's. I didn't believe it was broken and he even just carried on playing football afterwards. No tears, just pain.

Dh persuaded me to take him to a&e and I went to prove dh wrong. it was broken

'Definitely don't worry about that at all, it'd be a waste of A&E time and resources' sounds like inappropriate advice from someone whose only medical qualification is a first aid course, and if that turns out to be broken I would be having some strong words with the school. She oversteps her competence.

My brother had a fractured wrist when he was a child, he wasn't as upset as you'd expect and the hospital did say that kids fractures and breaks have different symptoms to adults.

Mind you, same brother also walked around for a week on a broken foot.

Get it checked and let us know how you get on.

I'm pleased you are going to A&E. It doesn't look right to me so may well be fractured or at least badly sprained.

'Dinner fork deformity'.....most likely broken....get to A&E to get checked over - although it can wait until tomorrow morning , but go in 'fasted' as its most likely he will need manipulation under anaesthetic (dh used to be a casualty doctor!)

My arm was broken for two weeks before my Mum took me to the doctor. Glad you're getting it X-rayed.
