Are DD's stretch marks bad?

DDNeedsReassurance · 13/05/2016 21:17

DD is 14. She isn't big or anything. However, she has been hit hard with stretch marks. Hates wearing her PE shorts/school swimming, etc. I have said they're not even bad, but I suppose in a 14 year old's eyes it's the worst think in the world. She says that no one has them... Hmm do any of your DD's have them? I don't really know what to say to her. I think they look fine.

I didn't have them but I developed really bad thread veins on my thighs when I was a young teenager. the only thing that boosted my confidence with them was a natural coloured fake tan, do you think you could suggest that to her? if you get quite a pale one so it doesn't look ridiculous then it shouldn't be obvious she is using it but it will make them look a lot less obvious.

LaContessaDiPlump · 13/05/2016 22:01

I had them - great purple/reddish things spread across my hips, stomach (ok I was overweight), breasts, arms, thighs.....

They had faded quite a lot by the time I got to 18 though, and are silvery/invisible now.

SanityAssassin · 13/05/2016 22:01

I got them on my thighs. lower back and boobs (and I was a really small kid - not sure that helps though as then its all stretching?) They are silver now (30 years later!! but still know they're there. Thank fully never got any in pregnancy though

SpiritedLondon · 13/05/2016 22:06

The previous poster took the words out of my mouth. I use airbrush for legs by Sally Hansen and really recommend it. It's not a fake tan it's a make up which evens out skins tone and covers marks and bruises - they do a paler one and a dark one I think. I certainly think you could try it for the gymnastics and even if it didn't cover them completely it would reduce their appearance. ( don't worry about it rubbing off, I find it needs soap and water and I've slept with it on and it's not marked my sheets). I find it great at this time of year when you first abandon the tights but don't yet have any colour on your legs. As the others have said they will fade but I can remember how at 14 everything is excruciatingly embarrassing. Good luck....I hope it helps

I had them. I hated them and thought they were the worst thing in the world. So I know how she is feeling :-( time taught me that they weren't the worst thing. And also that if I didn't hate them I'd have hated something else. Sorry not very constructive xxx

Thornrose · 13/05/2016 22:17

Aw bless, my dd has really livid red stretch marks. She gained weight very rapidly (due to medication) she even has them on her shoulders!

I don't have any but her dad had quite a lot so not sure if it's a genetics thing!

hellsbells99 · 13/05/2016 22:21

Op, is your DD very bendy? I assume so as you say she does gymnastics. There is a link between hypermobility and stretch marks. My DD also had very bad stretch marks, however now she is 18 they have faded and are not as visible.

yumyumpoppycat · 13/05/2016 22:22

I had them on my thighs at that age too, will fade a lot.

villanova · 13/05/2016 22:23

Have you thought of trying Dermablend makeup, designed to cover birthmarks, scars etc? I believe it's now stocked in Boots (not sure if it's stores or online). The other option might be to ask at a makeup counter like Clinique to fins a long-lasting foundation to cover the redness until the stretch marks start to fade.

hmmm my pregnancy sm weren't so bad either, maybe there is a potential positive.

AyeAmarok · 13/05/2016 22:27

I had them like that when I was a teenager. Mine were on my hips/sides of tops of thighs.

They've faded to silver now, and I did nothing to help them.

FoxyLoxy123 · 13/05/2016 22:35

Me me me. Since I was about that age I got them up and down my thighs/arse/top of hips/few on boobs. My brother had them on his arse too! Look much better and faded now I'm 24. I felt horrible with them. Thought it meant I was fat (was actually rather skinny) Sad

roundandroundthehouses · 13/05/2016 22:37

Dd1 (17) has them on the fronts of her thighs since she was 12 or 13. Quite a large area, turning brownish now when they were red before. I didn't have them myself, so didn't know they were such a normal thing, or that they faded, so this thread is very reassuring :), They don't bother her much but I might mention the Bio oil in case she'd like to try it.

Ginkypig · 13/05/2016 22:38

I had loads as although I was slim I was tall at young age. Some of mine were much worse than the pic of your dd.

Some have turned to very slight silver lines others I can even find even though I know they were there.

Some have sadly been replaced by much worse ones that will probably never become silver, the woes of ageing eh!

serin · 13/05/2016 22:38

DS was very worried that he may be pregnant when they appeared on him aged 11.

Legendofthephoenix · 13/05/2016 22:44

I wouldn't worry they will fade away over time. I had a tiny one on my face and went before my 20's. Tell her she will be fine.

velourvoyageur · 13/05/2016 22:49

they're beautiful OP
who cares, her body still works perfectly well! Absolutely no reason whatsoever to be embarrassed, honestly!
I have never had complaints about my scars and marks and I never expect there to be any Smile

Nobody is going to look and think badly of it. If it registers with people at all it'll probably either register as totally neutral, or people will think it's pretty in a way like I happen to.

Have you shown her Bend it like Beckham and the scene where Jess shows her scar?

Shonajay · 13/05/2016 22:51

Best ever stuff I've used is MAC face and body, try the 100ml size, it's sheer, slap on a bit with a blush brush, it's also water resistant if she sweats there. At night, emu oil I found amazing- I've had nine surgeries in four years and my scars are virtually invisible. Get a tester though and check outside shop before buying, but it lasts forever and is a staple for fashion models. It works out really economical

I cannot believe you have posted pics of your 14 year old daughters body.

Are you insane?

Iknownuffink · 13/05/2016 22:56

Why are you body shaming your daughter?

queenMab99 · 13/05/2016 22:56

I got them when my legs went from sparrow legs to something more human, at about 15. they disappeared completely very quickly.

DDNeedsReassurance · 13/05/2016 22:58

Thank you all...

Hmm body shaming? Are you joking? It's a bit of skin, I even cropped so a tiny bit of skin was showing. I don't give a shit what marks she does or doesn't have, I am trying to make her feel better about herself, after reading her some of these comments, she is a lot more happy to know other girls are the same; not just her. She doesn't mind the picture, as she says you can barely even tell what part of her body it is.
