AIBU to feel that this overheard remark was out of order?

Was at Poundland the other day overheard quite loud a supervisor or manager saying to someone who seemed new (both Poundland staff),

"Yeah well make sure you get them to come down the queue as they often stand there like braindead zombies" it was obvious she was talking about customers not staff... The person saying this then walked away I was a bit shocked and said to the woman she had said this to "that's not the way your customers should be spoken about don't you think?" As i said this the woman who had said the original remark came back but I didn't want to get into an argument but just left the store.

Really put me off if that's how the staff refer to their customers within hearing distance!

Really? Wow! Are you offended for your job OP or just an enthusiastic amateur?

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 12/05/2016 08:37

You cannot be serious?

She was silly to have said it loud enough for the Zombies to hear, but she wasn't incorrect.

If this made you do anything but laugh, I worry how you cope on a daily basis.

Marmaladeday · 12/05/2016 08:38

You have obviously never had to stand there killing yourself screaming 'who is next please' while the brain dead zombies stare off vacantly to space

Oysterbabe · 12/05/2016 08:38

I usually hang up the phone at work and say "Christ what a cunt". Which I stole from In the Thick of it.
Have you worked with the general public?

LittleBearPad · 12/05/2016 08:41

Meh, having worked in retail it's probably a pretty fair description. And there's definitely been occasions when I've been a brain dead zombie in a checkout queue.

Having had the misfortune to work in retail as a student, I'd say she was being rather restrained and complimentary.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 12/05/2016 08:55

I used to work retail for the summer season in a touristy area. It was accurate widely remarked that the customers would leave their brains at home when they came on holiday.

StarryIllusion · 12/05/2016 09:00

They DO stand there like brain dead zombies. You call them down and they just gape gormlessly at you until you wave them down for the fourth time and then go oh I didn't know you were serving. No love I'm stood here waving because I just felt like doing a bit of cheerleading for the other tills.

If you were going to comment you should have done it to the supervisor, not the poor new woman. How was she supposed to answer that?

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 12/05/2016 09:02

Meh. This is the retail 'experience' now.

You already have to traipse around filthy and soulless, shops, queue for ages and practically have to beg for your shopping. A few insults chucked in only sullies the process a teeny bit further.

is anyone taking bets yet this thread will be in the daily mail next week?

ParanoidGynodroid · 12/05/2016 09:06

I spend lots of time in pound shops. They're Braindead Zombie Central.

*Disclaimer: I include myself in that description.

rockchick78 · 12/05/2016 09:10

After many years in retail, I've called customers much, much worse!

NickiFury · 12/05/2016 09:12

I would have laughed if I heard that.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 12/05/2016 09:13

"99 percent of we mothers surveyed thought that people who shop in poundland were braindead"

Beeziekn33ze · 12/05/2016 09:15

If you want to be offended email the store saying what happens and suggesting some retraining for the manager or supervisor person. Otherwise forget it except to smile to yourself every time you hear a checkout person calling for people to come forward!👻👽🤖👻👽🤖😡

acasualobserver · 12/05/2016 09:16

I also think you are being over-sensitive, OP.

ParanoidGynodroid · 12/05/2016 09:18

Oh well, you'll have given them something to chuckle about in the staff room, OP.

thelittleredhen · 12/05/2016 09:19

I often walk around shopping centres thinking it's like a scene out of Dawn of the Dead. I thought everyone drew comparisons between shoppers and zombies? Wink

lottielou7 · 12/05/2016 09:22

YANBU - it's unprofessional, however true or otherwise it might be. They certainly won't be winning any award for customer services.

It would be interesting to see if the replies on here had been different if this happened in a restaurant rather than Poundland...

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 12/05/2016 09:22

I do often wait in queues like a braindead zombie. It's the way to cope with the boredom of standing in a queue.

There is nothing like working in a customer facing role to make you really despise people... that's why I always try to be very friendly to people doing those sorts of jobs, because IME the majority of the day can range between being ignored to being shouted at.

So if you're worried about people being respectful towards each other, I think the best advice is start with yourself and hope the world will follow!

thecatsarecrazy · 12/05/2016 09:27

I work for Poundland.
Basically we have 2 till staff on at any time. We get moaned at by customers because "you need more staff" till staff are watched on - how long our tills are idol for, how fast we scan, how many items per transaction we sell apparently its not acceptable to sell less than 4 and that is what the stuff on the till is for ( the chocolate bars) we are not trained to be helpful we are just trained to get stuff through the till asap. Lidl are the same my dh used to work there and because he didn't chuck the items through the scanner quickly enough he was always moaned at. I have been there a year and 3 mangers have quit.

NickiFury · 12/05/2016 09:28

I regularly look round Harrods don't buy much though! and I would have laughed if I heard it there too lottie
