At a day out with the family. We were sat on benches watching a horse type event. People sat beside us. After 20 minutes myself, DD and DH got up to go and look at some other things.
Lady to my right says quite loudly "Was it something we said?" as we passed.
I stopped, asked "Excuse me?"
She turned and laughed to her friend and repeated it then blushed a bit, flustered, I said no more and simply walked on followed by sniggers.
She was a woman in her 60s.
My husband didn't seem to think this was rude...at all. Something to be expected from people of that age group.
I found myself a bit non plussed as to why anyon would make such a sarcastic comment FOR NO APPARENT REASON other than to embarrass.
Am still confused by it.
Also, I didn't dig her in the chops like I wanted to.

It was just a joke. One of these "funny" things people say.

EastMidsMummy · 10/05/2016 21:37

If that's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you today, I would be grateful. Not worth another thought.

BlahBlahBlahWhatever · 10/05/2016 21:38

Shes weird

Only1scoop · 10/05/2016 21:38

She was joking

ToriaPumpkin · 10/05/2016 21:38

My manager says things like that all the time. It's just something people say that mean nothing.

sepa · 10/05/2016 21:39

Should have told her it was because of her halitosis!

lolaflores · 10/05/2016 21:40

I just wonder why I didn't find it funny? Is it something people do a lot then?

you should have gone with your initial instinct and beaten the crap out of those two old ladies

or learn to understand a light hearted comment is.

up to you

Only1scoop · 10/05/2016 21:40

Yes

TealLove · 10/05/2016 21:41

It's just a joke

0hCrepe · 10/05/2016 21:42

I can imagine my MIL saying something like that. She just says anything to anyone but doesn't really mean anything. Just joking about.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 10/05/2016 21:43

It's a comment my dad [70] would make to strangers and I'd think ' oh fuck off Dad' then eye roll to heaven and back.

Don't take offence , it's humour.

StealthPolarBear · 10/05/2016 21:44

It's on the same lines as cheer up luv it might never happen
meaningless but harmless

lolaflores · 10/05/2016 21:44

Perhaps I misunderstood. I shouldn't have felt embarrassed then? It wasnt supposed to make me feel self concious? I felt really stupid like I had done something to offend her and she felt she needed to remark on it. I kept thinking after wards....what did I do?

OP posts:
suspiciousofgoldfish · 10/05/2016 21:44

Yep it's a non-comment. Totally pointless.

Like those people who say "hot enough for ya?!" on sunny days.

Some people just like to say inane things.

limitedperiodonly · 10/05/2016 21:45

They were probably talking about you

lolaflores · 10/05/2016 21:48

limitedperiodonly but I was just sitting there! Besides loads of other people.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 10/05/2016 21:51

Probably were talking about you.

There is always the go up, sniff deeply and ask them if they have a flavour before doing a long lick up the cheek. Or just do the British thing and roll your eyes and walk away.

You did nothing, let it go.

limitedperiodonly · 10/05/2016 21:53

That was my feeble attempt at a joke. A bit like theirs. Take no notice.

NicknameUsed · 10/05/2016 21:54

Of course it wasn't rude. Are you always so easily offended?

I would have just laughed along with the woman.

Alisvolatpropiis · 10/05/2016 21:55

I think you overreacted.

emotionsecho · 10/05/2016 21:55

It's just a light hearted comment OP, have you really never heard it before?

Oysterbabe · 10/05/2016 21:58

It's just one of those pointless friendly things people say. I'm surprised this is the first time you've encountered it.
Completely harmless and I'm sure they were pretty Hmm at your over reaction.

Marzipants · 10/05/2016 21:59

Yeah, it was a lighthearted comment, a weak smile would have done. She wasn't being rude, you overreacted. (And are over-thinking it.)

HairySubject · 10/05/2016 22:05

I say things like that it is meaningless sometimes my mouth just likes to say words.
