At a day out with the family. We were sat on benches watching a horse type event. People sat beside us. After 20 minutes myself, DD and DH got up to go and look at some other things.
Lady to my right says quite loudly "Was it something we said?" as we passed.
I stopped, asked "Excuse me?"
She turned and laughed to her friend and repeated it then blushed a bit, flustered, I said no more and simply walked on followed by sniggers.
She was a woman in her 60s.
My husband didn't seem to think this was rude...at all. Something to be expected from people of that age group.
I found myself a bit non plussed as to why anyon would make such a sarcastic comment FOR NO APPARENT REASON other than to embarrass.
Am still confused by it.
Also, I didn't dig her in the chops like I wanted to.

It was just a joke. One of these "funny" things people say.

If that's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you today, I would be grateful. Not worth another thought.

I can imagine my MIL saying something like that. She just says anything to anyone but doesn't really mean anything. Just joking about.

It's a comment my dad [70] would make to strangers and I'd think ' oh fuck off Dad' then eye roll to heaven and back.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I shouldn't have felt embarrassed then? It wasnt supposed to make me feel self concious? I felt really stupid like I had done something to offend her and she felt she needed to remark on it. I kept thinking after wards....what did I do?

It's just one of those pointless friendly things people say. I'm surprised this is the first time you've encountered it.
Completely harmless and I'm sure they were pretty at your over reaction.

Yeah, it was a lighthearted comment, a weak smile would have done. She wasn't being rude, you overreacted. (And are over-thinking it.)

I say things like that it is meaningless sometimes my mouth just likes to say words.
