To not give 2 hoots that I drive an old banger? Lighthearted

More times than I can recall: I've heard the clucking of dropping jaws; witnessed sage shakings of heads; caught sympathetic looks....all because of the 'shed' I drive!!!

FWIW I don't give two hoots about anyone else's car either. They can drive and take pride in the fanciest wheels money can buy - good for them. Or the scuzziest banger like me - I'm sure there are reasonable reasons. Mine are wholly sentimental.

BUT DON'T JUDGE ME ON THE CAR I DRIVE!!!

thank you for letting me get that off my chest Smile

Explains why it was so cheap in the first place....Hmm

I give zero shits about cars as long as it is safe and it goes I'm happy.

Only1scoop · 09/05/2016 23:48

Your Corsa sounds mint.

Me and my mate at work used to pull on staff car park full of pretentious convertibles....

Me in my knackered old Fiesta the window winder had snapped I used to have to stick my palms on the glass and slide the window down to swipe my pass.

Mine is a 2002 Seat Leon (like a pp) and it's done 220,000 miles. I am hoping to get to 250k because that is his far away the moon is.

Loads of dents and scratches. Wing mirrors held on with gaffer tape and some kind of mastic thing (can't actually move them), leaks too. Half the internal lights font work, the ones that light up the heating controls. Fuse keeps blowing in the power supply so can't charge phone and sat nav....

Don't care where I park it, wouldn't notice another scratch, and it's pretty unlikely to be nicked. I've stopped servicing it (just MOT now) and I don't bother with breakdown cover either.

I probably do need to replace it but unless I go back to a car commuting job I shall stick with it and keep the money in the bank.

Goingthedistance · 09/05/2016 23:58

Rooting for your car outTo. Why the hell can't a Seat Lein have ambitions...?!

I've just gotten rid of my old banger as husband treated me to a naice shiny new one. But I miss my old one so much!

DramaAlpaca · 10/05/2016 00:26

I've just bought myself a new-to-me car. It's 11 years old, so actually not new at all, and I absolutely love it. It replaced a real old banger which I reluctantly had to get rid of as it was no longer reliable. I love tootling around in my little old car.

Goingthedistance · 10/05/2016 00:33

....what would you think if I told you I was actually massively wealthy and still drove the old banger...?

Going it's an old ford Ka. They came out when I was a teenager and I always wanted one. Only cost £5,500 new (my other option was a corsa but would've been £7000) and cheapo insurance. Only use about £25 a month petrol and can car park in teeny tiny spaces. Has a tape deck because cd player was a £200 optional extra I didn't need.
Don't like the new version and I will keep mine until it dies.
Only time I wobbled was when I was pregnant and worried about safety in a 3 door and the boot being so small, but it has been great.

I have a 2004 Corsa with a few dents and holes and I don't consider it a banger. Maybe everyone else does though Wink

Not very good at links but try this one!

We have a 2001 Mondeo. It is called Bob and it usually gets us about ok. Bits fall off and we replace them, the car is not pretty but it's all ours. Only dh drives and we have a very low mileage a sexy shiny car seems an unnecessary indulgence.

Bombaybunty · 10/05/2016 09:40

We got rid of our 13yr old focus last year. We loved it but it was about to cost more than it's value so the time was right.

I got a perverse sense of pleasure parking between the fancy 4x4s at my DS school.

It was very sad to see it go!

londonrach · 10/05/2016 09:44

I love my old skoda. Nothing and i mean nothing will make me change it for one of those new cars now that are run by a computer. I never forgot driving my car (he has a name) past brand new cars in the staff car park that had the aa out as something on the computer had gone wrong. Lets here it for proper cars!!!!!!!!!!!!

My neighbour's son is a multi-millionaire (we are talking £50m+) and he drives a 1998 toyota landcruiser purely out of sentimental reasons.

claraschu · 10/05/2016 09:57

My husband's 20 year old Skoda has several types of lichen growing on it. He is very proud of his flora. We had mice living in our very ancient Volvo; they cleaned up all the crumbs we dropped and raised a lovely brood of babies.

I can rarely tell when people have fancy cars or expensive clothes and handbags. Cars look the same to me unless they are obviously different- like a VW camper or a classic car, or something like that.

VeryPunny · 10/05/2016 09:59

ANother 10 year old Skoda owner here. It drinks a bit of oil but has never let me down. I love driving, but the idea of raiding savings for 20K or taking out a £300/month loan just for a nice car that will depreciate and the kids will treat like a skip makes me think Fuck no! Maybe that's why we have savings.....

vvviola · 10/05/2016 10:02

My 2004 Toyota Corrola started acting up recently and it looked like I might have to replace it (DH reckoned the problem was either the head gasket or a stuck valve - thankfully it was the stuck valve). I was devestated at the thought of losing it.

That car drove me to the hospital when I was having DD1, drove halfway across Europe twice when we moved to Brussels, towed my Dad's boat around for 3 years when we left for NZ, and collected us from the airport when we finally came home.

It will have to go eventually, but I'm dreading the day. It'll be like losing a whole load of memories.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 10/05/2016 10:13

We bought a Honda CRV for our joint 50th, because they don't break. Some of the Mk 1s have 300000 miles on them.
