To not give 2 hoots that I drive an old banger? Lighthearted

More times than I can recall: I've heard the clucking of dropping jaws; witnessed sage shakings of heads; caught sympathetic looks....all because of the 'shed' I drive!!!

FWIW I don't give two hoots about anyone else's car either. They can drive and take pride in the fanciest wheels money can buy - good for them. Or the scuzziest banger like me - I'm sure there are reasonable reasons. Mine are wholly sentimental.

BUT DON'T JUDGE ME ON THE CAR I DRIVE!!!

thank you for letting me get that off my chest Smile

The newer the car the safer it is.
OK, I'll grant you that, up to a point

A lot of the older ones crumple like tin cans on impact.
But that is simply bollocks - not least because one of the reasons new cars are safer is that they do crumple - it's designed into them so they absorb energy from an impact.

Not what I want me and my kids in.
Your choice of course.

ijustwannadance · 09/05/2016 22:45

I love my old car. Really basic but I bought it new when I started earning decent money in my 20's.
It has never not started no matter the weather and still drives great, uses minimal petrol and I own it outright. It's only in the last year I have had to pay for fixes like breakpads but still loads of life left in it.

Besides sentimental reasons, If I had to buy a newer car I would have to end up with monthly payments I couldn't afford.

MyKingdomForBrie · 09/05/2016 23:01

'Your choice of course' - well yeah. Pretty logical one too.

'That's bollocks' - um no. The new ones crumple in the right places but the 'cab' area doesn't crumple. Not the case with a lot of the older cars. In side impacts for example the incidence of passenger injury is massively higher in older vehicles because they cannot I withstand the impact.

It's just facts, no need to be shitty.

Goingthedistance · 09/05/2016 23:01

Sorry to disappoint you ESD Sad
Will you forgive me if I tell you it has a shiner of a dent in the passenger door and numerous scrapes front and back that makes it look like it's been slapped around by a determined octopus...? Grin

It's just facts, no need to be shitty.

Well not really, it also depends on the manufacturer and the size/shape of car - the NCAP ratings, for example, are not absolute - they are comparable for the class of car. You may well be safer in a larger older car than a newer smaller one - or vice-versa.

As for In side impacts for example the incidence of passenger injury is massively higher in older vehicles because they cannot I withstand the impact.
I'd like to see your working out on this please - i.e link to your "facts" or explanation before you accuse me of shittyness.

elephantoverthehill · 09/05/2016 23:14

A car is an A to B machine. Go to the tip, get the shopping, shovel various kids in, get new furniture and go to work. I only ever see it from the inside and so long as the radio and heater work, what do I care?

MargotLovedTom · 09/05/2016 23:16

We have a 13 yr old Skoda with numerous dents, rusty wheel arches and suncream handprints on the paintwork (thanks kids!). It will not bloody die and is the most reliable car ever. There could be a nuclear war, zombie apocolypse and a new ice age all at once and Rhoda would still keep chugging on.

Yanbu.

Personally I love cars and spend a lot on mine. However, I have no interest at all in clothes, and I get people assuming things from my decades-old faded t-shirts.

Finallyonboard · 09/05/2016 23:27

My DH gets the brand new cars and I get his old ones. It doesn't bother me, although I do like being in his for long distance drives. Much more comfortable.

Backpfeifengesicht · 09/05/2016 23:30

People who judge others for having a crappy car are often not very perceptive. I work with very successful high-earning business people and investors. The first thing I learned was that you can actually take a few hints about a person when you see the car they drive and the reason why they have the car they have. I've worked with everyone from multi-million to billion level investors who drive honda civics (who always turn out to be nice respectful people in my experience). Then there's managing partners/financial sector business people who drive the latest, most expensive Mercedes or BMW (and always lease- never buy because they always want the latest model). There is a logic to it, they need to display success to keep on being successful in that mindset.

Honestly when I see a upper management executive/partner roll up in a 100+k Mercedes I'm more likely to think that they or their company might have a struggle to make the monthly payments than I am to think they are extremely successful and wealthy. I actually had to deal with a company CEO once whose lease had ended on his ridiculously expensive luxury car. He literally went into hiding for two months to dodge being contacted by the dealership who had sent a "deliver the car to us or purchase the car or we will sue you" demand. I'm a lawyer and this somehow reached my desk so I had to chase this guy to get him to return the car which he (his company actually) couldn't pay missed car lease payments on. He owed us a lot in legal fees which we likely never saw either.

I know this doesn't hold true all the time but it's surprising how often it does! Drive a 30k car, great. Drive a 100k car and I do tend to think what I described above!

OneMagnumisneverenough · 09/05/2016 23:30

*Skoda?

It's a skoda isn't it?*

Unless it's 1970s/80s vintage then why would it being a Skoda be an issue or make it a banger?

fieldfare · 09/05/2016 23:32

10 yrs old is nothing!

I'm in two minds about cars. I've always been a bit of a petrolhead and have loved various fast, expensive, beautiful to behold cars I've been lucky enough to own or drive on loan.
But now I drive a Y reg beast of a Nissan Terrano 4x4. I love it. I can go off-road confidently. I can pull a caravan. I can yank out big old tree stumps. The dog can jump in the back covered in mud. There's room for bikes. I'm not bored about messy kids or if people eat in there. I can get wherever I need to go, even through reasonably high water when other cars are turned back. Simply love it and give no need to what other people think!

Chippednailvarnishing · 09/05/2016 23:33

Just bought a £500 banger last week. I luffs it!

MargotLovedTom · 09/05/2016 23:33

Wink was it that mustardy brown colour?

Ours is like this, so not particularly fugly or anything. Just very battered and bruised.

To not give 2 hoots that I drive an old banger? Lighthearted
FifiRebel · 09/05/2016 23:34

I've been feeling very proud of my 2000 Ford Fiesta this week - passed MOT with no work required! So I treated myself to a long overdue valet and car wash.

The week didn't end so well when I went to Mothercare to buy a car seat for my first baby. None of the car seats in the store could be fitted safely in my car. And then a bird shat on the car while the lovely shop assistant was trying to fit one of the seats

MargotLovedTom · 09/05/2016 23:34

Mustardy brown comment was to EatShit.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 09/05/2016 23:37

My 16 year old Honda failed it's MoT.

I had to put 2 tyres on it.

I've had it 4 years. Every MoT has failed on tyres.

It is roomy. For me and kids. And buggies. Coats. Beach toys. Picnic.

Aircon. Cruise control. Heater. Radio. Lockable windows (so dd can't escape)

I didn't like it to begin with. But it has won me over now. I even gave it some oil the other day!

Goingthedistance · 09/05/2016 23:43

ESD I'll see your old banger and raise you several flat batteries, worn out brake pads, numerous dents and scrapes AND an oil leak! Grin
