To hate modern 'class' photos?

Where's the sense of occasion? Why are they doing cheesy poses in socks? What exactly is wrong with the class in the school hall so you actually know where they are??

(I might be feeling sore cos they grouped my admittedly tall DD with all the shortest kids and she looks like Gargantua...)

You'll get loads of replies telling you class photos are rubbish anyway etc etc.

But, YANBU. I hate them. Stupid sizes too. When DS started school I was pleased to see the old style traditional class photo, all in rows, back ones stood on a bench, front ones crossed legged. Then they changed it and now they do the stupid long ones in random groups of 4 in silly poses. I'll need to buy DD's this year but I don't like them.

I agree. It makes me cringe.

A few years ago our school converted to doing these type of photos. They were really cheesy with a few kids holding various "props" to do with whatever themes they'd covered that year.

Obviously some parent complained that their child wasn't holding something so now they're even more ridiculous with every child holding some ginormous poster or random cuddly toy or a map. You can barely make out the children's faces for the riot of colour and busyness. Ridiculous.

And yes, I still buy them

You would think that school photographers would up their game really because it's quite easy to take a good photo these days. If I'm paying 15 quid (£15!!) For a photo I want it to be bloody good, or capture a place/moment like nothing else which these photoshopped things don't at all.

We complained to the school about this when they experimented badly, turns out everyone complained and so we get the nice traditional ones :-)

What do you mean "in socks"?

Our eldest is 4 and at our school it's 'traditional' but 8 goofy smiles and at best 3/4 of the children looking at the camera. I love them.

They tried the new style composite groups of 4 or 5 for one year at dd's primary. The following year, they reverted to traditional. According to the school secretary, the new kind were NOT popular. Not sure if that meant people complained or that there weren't as many orders though!

School should be fun - not stuffy in rows with fake smiles - let them be kids!

My kids look awful in buttoned up shirt and well let's face it brushed hair - it's not what they look like day to day

What fresh hell is this? New since my day (back in the Jurassic). This is one of the first hits on Google, from a professional photographer's site - is this what you mean?

I don't like them because they look so staged and most of the children look uncomfortable in their forced fun poses.
Also, my son is very tall and he is always the only one kneeling.

I hate the new ones too.
Last year one child had their hand on the teacher's shoulder wouldn't have happened in my day, tut, tut, grumble, grumble.

I bought them when DD was in nursery and reception, and will again for year 6 but I don't really want any in between, they're far too expensive for what they are.

That's exactly it Gasp0de! It's actually four different photos merged into one.

Wooah ours and this bad! Perhaps I should be grateful! Ours don't have the stupid props but otherwise similar to that yes. here come the potatoes I mean they take their shoes off.

I don't mind the silly poses too much it's just the fact that they are placed on a white background and the photo is taken in small groups and then stuck together. You don't get the sense of them as a group or of what the school looks like.

Hmm, I quite like the new ones. Ours aren't as busy as that example though: not really any props.

I always wonder what the parents who buy these every school year do with them. They're not small. I suppose a frieze around the living room wall? or possibly every room if you have several children.

Ours are in the playground, 3 rows, tall kids on benches at the back, average kids stood in the middle, and small kids on the floor at the from cross legged, teacher on either side lovely

I never bought them when they started that. In fact there have been lots of school photos I didn't buy because: they were too expensive, silly or had used photo shop and distorted rather than enhanced the photos. Fortunately my DC all got sensible ones of the key year group/class photos to be mementos.

Middle DD had photos taken at Nursery that were quite expensive and I had no intention of buying, but they were so good that I did have to buy. For those the phtographer went in for some time, and caught natural poses.

DS' old school had one of the modern photos. His new school, you just get an individual photo like I had when I were a lass - except they don't even bother to brush their hair nowadays.
